We're on a mission to Run Around the World!

Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!

Some info about us:

We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.

Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.

Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!

Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks wrm and jfk! I know you are both right, and I shouldn't be too hard on myself. I looked at my splits afterward and realized I did a classic primadonna and started off way too fast. There were other things that didn't go well that morning, but I'm kicking myself for running really dumb. Live and learn and then move on.

3.4 for me yesterday which puts my weekly total (ending 5/6) at 15.5. 

16 miles for me for the week!  Much better than last week

3.6 miles for me for yesterday - good speedwork.  9.5 miles for last week. 

So, I always know when it's time for new sneakers when I get a touch of runner's knee. Unfortunately I've been dealing with this lately, so I'm ordering new ones today. That means lower mileage (or, in other words, more time on the elliptical) until they arrive. While I do find this disheartening, in my head I know that it's important to take a little breather every few months.

20 miles for me from the week of 30 April - 6 May. Argh!

Jenka - runner's world had great advice re shoes: when you find a pair your comfortable with after a month or so, order a second pair.  A couple times a week, at the beginning or end of every run, do a short quarter mile or your cooldown in the new shoes.   That will break them in without any heartache (footache?)  When you can really tell the difference between the old ones and the new ones, it's time to retire the old ones and move the new ones into the full time slot.

Ugh.  Had to wrap an ingrown toenail with tissue and stretch out a lower back aching from the weight room this morning.  My self-talk was so negative going in that I'm surprised I made it past the first half mile.  Could only keep my 10K pace going for 5K, then gave up and did intervals just so I wouldn't have to log a horrendous 10K time.

How do I prevent this? I get it usually near the end of a jog (when I am pushing myself a little) sometimes i have to stop to walk it off while stretching overhead.... I want to make it through and entire "run" without stopping, but if I try to work through the cramp, it hurts even more.....

Suggestions to stop before it starts?

ooo Jenka I was feeling your pain after Broad St and went out and bought new shoes today!! I went with the Brooks Trance again but the new Mizunos were nice (just bulky for the summer). What did you get? I LOVE new shoes, so I hope yours come in super fast. Until then, enjoy the break on the eliptical.

matty_h I look forward to reading that article in Runners World. There was a glitch and my May issue just arrived. I lost my April issue (I think unless that never arrived either...) so I need to call and see if I can reorder one. It would be a smart alternative. I'm not sure I can afford it; I'd need to weigh the pros and cons. Thanks for pointing it out!!!

thinthought I'm not sure if you want a response here or under the OP but it sounds like a regular, run-of-the-mill stitch. Go slower during your runs and don't push at the end, and see if that helps. Listen to your body, if you have to walk, you have to walk.

Matty_h, heh, thanks for the advice! Fortunately I'm on my 8 thousandth pair of new running shoes so I'm well-versed in shoe-breaking-in and such. In general, I don't really need to break them in, the problem is always that the old shoes die before I expect them to (or I run more than I think I do!) so I'm always caught by surprise. I've only had these about 5 months, although time went by so fast I kept thinking it was only 2 months!

I've got a great picture of a pair of new running shoes that I put on for the first time and went off on an 8 mile run. I didn't realize it, but when I came home the back of the shoe where it meets the foot above the heel was all bloody from rubbing! Eww! Good times!

Primadonna, I always buy the Saucony Progrid 6 Ultimate. I need super-extra-wicked-lot stability. Runningshoes.com has great deals, I generally get them for $20 less than retail stores. Sorry to hear about Broad St, but you did good to listen to your body! That can only make you stronger in the long run!

Thinthought, yes, it does sound like a regular cramp. Firstly, stop worrying about stopping. Even the best runners often stop in the middle of runs. There's no stigma against it. Secondly, often cramps are caused by irregular breathing. If, as you say, you are pushing yourself at the end of a run, it's possible you aren't paying attention to regular breathing. I always count 2 steps in, 2 steps out on long runs and 2 steps in, 1 step out on fast runs. Good luck!

It's Friday, folks! I'm going to spend the weekend cleaning and assembling new bookshelves from Ikea. Got the in-laws arriving from Scotland next week. Ack, no pressure! Have a good one.

It was a cool 3.5 run for me this morning. 

I have decided that my running shoes need to be replaced.  I still consider myself a newbie at this thing (this will be my first replacement) Sooo I am soliciting advice on what to get in order to be prepared for a half mary Labor Day weekend.   My feet tend to pronate, not quite duck flat but close, and I am in the Clydesdale division of runners (205 and dropping).  I have been looking at a pair of Asics 2130 but I am open for suggestions and opinions. 

I am trying to get to the local running store, but their schedule and mine have not worked out.

and check out what's available for my foot type.  Then I go to zappos.com and check out what the reviews of the product I'm interested in are like.  Then I compare prices and end up buying the least expensive pair.  Be sure to click on the item description to find out the real price on the runningshoefinder site. 

But you know, the best thing is to go to a specialized store (running room, etc) to get your foot typed by a pro.  You're under no obligation to buy from the store once they've given you a list of running shoe options, and you'll know that you've been seen by an expert.

thinthought:  I have the same issue.  Someone from this site suggested a while back that I breathe out forcefully when the foot on the opposite side hits the ground (for you and me, that would be the left foot) and it's miraculous.  Try it and see if it works for you too.  BTW, it happens to me less and less, the more I run.
