We're on a mission to Run Around the World!

Please visit the previous incarnation of our thread here: http://caloriecount.about.com/forums/post/484 66.html.

Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!

Some info about us:

We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.

Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.

Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!

Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.

For detailed mileage, please visit our spreadsheet: http://www.editgrid.com/user/new_cc_worldrunn er/Runners_Log

Hello! 3 miles for today. Hills Wednesday. Yuck. But I am getting faster, so it must be helping!

Hi all!

The post and spreadsheet have been updated to include the miles from last week. We are almost at the 50% mark!!!! Happy Running!

RATW (Primadonna98)

Thanks, Primadonna, for counting up last week's mileage! I can hardly believe we're halfway there!

It's bitterly cold here, which makes the gym very crowded. Although I am happy so many people are working out, it sucks that I have to wait for a treadmill. I'll stop complaining now, considering next week it'll be in the 60s.

Energygirl, hill work sucks, but it's definitely worth it! I need to get back to it, I've been pretty lazy about incline lately. However, I do run outside 2-3 times per week, which in my opinion is hill work even if I'm not paying attention.

Fitnessfreak, how's the cold?

Hey everyone - 8.5 for me today.

I have a question.  I am doing a 10 miler and a half marathon this summer. I've never done any races before and I don't care about my time, I just want to finish.  So when I run I just run - I don't do intervals or anything to increase my speed.  Is that alright?  I feel like I'm missing out on something I should be doing.  At this point though, my goal is just to complete the races.

I'm also worried that since I've ben running on a treadmill all winter once spring rolls around and I go outside I won't be able to run nearly as far as I can on the treadmill and I also won't be able to pace myself properly.  When I run on the treadmill I tend to try to run faster than the setting and end up having to slow myself down.  Any thoughts about that?

Add 8 miles for me.  I had my first 5 mile run and it was great!  I am sore today but having a new distance is exciting, and now once I adjust to the distance I can start training to improve my speed.
Hi--12 miles today.

Hi-- 3.0 for me today.  Kinda disappointing;  I was hoping for a short tempo run, but I was so wiped out from a bike training session last night, it was all I could do just stay upright.

minie13: There were some posts in the old thread for some training plans you could follow.  I think they all basically follow a formula of: one long run on the weekend (at a marathon pace), and a short tempo run (maybe just under a 5K pace) once during the week.  The third day seems to vary---intervals or longer, endurance pace runs.  Also, they seem to have a recovery week every 3rd or 4th week in common, where you cut back on the miles a bit.

FWIW, I run treadmills during the week and do the long run outdoors.  When I run with the treadmill at 1% incline, my pace is about the same indoors or out.  I used to worry that I'd be slower outside for not having the numerical feedback, but it's really not the case.  What I do notice, though, is that I have a lot better endurace outside.

Here's one of primadonna's links (follow the "smart coach" form)

 http://www.runnersworld.com/channel/0,7119,s6-238-0-0-0,00.ht ml?cm_re=HP-_-Homepage%20Channel-_-Training

jfk61 - Thanks for the reply.  I have seen alot of the training plans.  The thing is I don't want to do it that way.  I like my way better.  I guess I'm asking for permission to do it my way.  I don't want to hurt myself or anything, but I also don't care about increasing my pace.  I am slowly increasing my distance and its working.  Its been workin for me, so I guess I'll continue on my merry way unless someone else thinks that its going to be detrimental in the long run.

minie13: I'm not an expert, but I would think that if you are doing all your runs at a marathon pace (really pretty easy, you can hold a conversation the whole way), then you'd be OK...though I think taking it easy every 4th week would still be well advised.

Until the start of the year, I was running all-out sprints every time I ran, and working only on pace, not increasing my distance. I got some professional coaching and testing done in January and learned why this was a bad idea. At that point, I started doing what I think you are doing now--a lot more long distance, easy running with no speed work. I felt like I *had* to vastly up the distance, because it felt too easy to be worthwhile otherwise. I think it's getting results, and it is nice not to be worrying about injury all the time.

I've been gradually improving my endurance pace on the treadmill, and improving my distance outdoors, but I do have a 10K in May where pace matters to me, and the few days I've tried a 5K time trial, it seemed to me like I'm losing some race pace capability from where I was in December :-( For that reason, I'm going to start training by the recommended plans, just so I get some more variety.

I think your plan is OK, though, as long as you're not pushing yourself too hard, and you give yourself a break once a month. But if you're hitting 11 miles on your long runs now, it seems like most of your half-mary endurance training is already done--why not work on speed a bit?

If I join this club should I submit my running hours since August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight? Or simply starting from the moment I join?

I apologize if this already has been asked...

Hi ultrarunner2--just start submitting miles from the time you join (no need to go back to August). Our weeks run from Wednesday to Tuesday. So if you feel like joining us this week, for example, we can take any miles that you ran yesterday.

We hope to see you around this thread!!

Very cool. Thanks wrm2105. I want to join and I'll be logging my miles until next Wednesday so I can give you a weekly number.

This is exciting!

Awesome, ultrarunner2--some people post their mileage on a weekly basis (by Tuesday night, since totals are updated on Wednesday), while some people, myself included, like to post after every run. Feel free to choose whichever method you prefer--our tally team does an excellent job of keeping track and posting updates.

Again, welcome!!
2.8 miles for me today -- thanks!

Welcome ultrarunner2!! I also like to post after each run; the crew here is super motivating! And welcome back, spacedreamer01! How's the training going?

4.6 miles for me today -- speedwork, my fave. Laughing

minie, I think if all you want is to finish, then your distance training will help you achieve that. Some things to consider as you continue training -- You should definitely try to run outdoors as soon as you can. Running outside doesn't have the buffer that a treadmill does (in terms of cushioning) nor do you have that wonderful mechanism that simply programs you to run at a certain pace. It's a closer fit to races, too, and will help you adjust to natural fluctuations in land elevation. Jfk brings up a great point in that you have the distance covered, perhaps (and that's your call to make) working on time may present you with a fun challenge. Also, and this again, is just something to ponder, I discovered  when I first started running races that the thrill of raceday would get to me and ultimately I ran faster than when I was training. I found I tired quickly and a few times almost didn't finish. For me personally, this was a great experience to push me into training with plans. The training plans incorporate different speeds in order to help your body adjust to this factor. Specifically, tempo runs (longer but not "long" runs) help with lactate threshold, the body's ability to tolerate running for longer periods of time at a "comfortably hard" pace. I couldn't possibly try to explain it in proper terms, so here's an article on Runner's World about why elites/trainers/professionals feel they are important: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-263-265-12224-0,0 0.html And speedwork can best be explained in the article Speed Play: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-263--12081-0,00.h tml

Now, in all honesty, you could do these things without actually using a plan -- by running sprints for 1/2 mile then jogging 1/2 mile or saying for the next 10 mins I'm going to run at a "comfortably hard" pace. Your runs have to be about what you want them to be, and if you aren't ready to use a formal plan, then don't.  You have a few races coming up -- perhaps you should consider running the first the way you want to and then re-evaluating your system. The first time I run a certain distance in a race, my goal is always to finish, but the second time (at this point in my running life), my goal is to kick my butt and PR. That's my own Type A personality shining through. But, trust me, everyone runs for a different reason, and there are plenty of people out there that run with no particular time goal in mind. Running is a wonderful sport because it's what you want it to be. No one here can tell you what's best for you. Happy running!

Minie, personally, I think you should just not worry about pace (which you say you don't). For your first race ever, you should just go and experience it. After that, then if you get the competitive bug (which, truthfully, happens to most people after their first race) then you can follow one of the training plans to improve your pace. I would suggest, though, that you run a few times outside at, or close to, the distance of the race, for the following reasons: 1. as Primadonna says, pavement doesn't have the shock protection that the treadmill does; 2. running outside is harder without the treadmill pacing you, and having that challenge as well as running your first race are not things you want to coincide. My suggestion is to run outside starting a couple weeks before the race, do not worry about pace, but check your watch before you leave, run at whatever is comfortable to you, and then check your watch when you get back. Running your first race will be an eye-opener as far as your own abilities in reference to other people, and after that, make your decision about training. Oh yeah, and also if you currently don't use incline, definitely start going at least 1% and preferably 1.5%.

My first race was a 5K, and at the time I had been running for about a year but rarely running more than 3 miles. I was very nervous, but I told myself all I had to do was finish, and not to worry about time. Well, I got there and as soon as the race started I was running behind some older, fatter people, and I was like, "really? I can beat them!" so I put the speed on and burnt myself out. I finished in about 34 minutes, and I was so ashamed that I started on speedwork the next week. Frankly, it made me a much better runner.

And thus ends Storytime with Jenka for today. Hope everyone has a nice weekend! I'm off to Birmingham, AL with dh for the weekend, just to get the heck out of ATL for a couple days.

Ultrarunner2: welcome! We're so happy you are joining our dedicated World Runners! Also, your username is intimidating, hee hee! Wrm2105 is our resident long distance runner, perhaps you two can compare ultramarathon pace times while the rest of us dink around with our half marathons.

hi everybody - forgot to post my miles for last week, I managed to run all of 5.1 boring miles around the indoor track.  I can't wait for spring.
Hi There,

Please add 3.1 miles for me from yesterday. The cough doesn't seem to be getting any better, but then again, it's not getting worse either. That said - whether it's a cold or the flu or something else, I've been feeling a little drained. Oh, and in case I forgot to mention, I also have a UTI right now....grrr. Apart from the blood in the urine thing (gross and, truthfully, a little scary), I'm not showing any other signs.

Still thinking I'm going to give tomorrow's 1/2 a go. It's just a local race, nothing sophisticated (ie: no timing chips, no crowds of people cheering you on, no free t-shirt etc. etc.) - so I can always do a combination of run/walk if I have to. I've been eating well, and, thanks to Robitussin, sleeping fairly well too.

Oh, and my doctor mentioned "runners' hematuria".....as a possible cause/diagnosis for my UTI. Anyone ever heard of that??? It's basically blood in the urine - that is caused by running. BIZARRE!!!!!

Thanks for all the welcomes! I've chosen ultrarunner2 as my username because I just love to do races over 26 miles.

Unfortunately, I work 12 hours a day so my training runs durning the week aren't as great as they should be; however, on the weekends I usually go longer. Because of that I just going to submit my milages on a weekly basis.

It's awesome being with this group.

Hi everyone--7 miles today.
