Mission: Run Around the World--MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!

Quote  |  Reply

We're on a mission to Run Around the World!

Please visit the previous incarnation of our thread here: http://caloriecount.about.com/forums/post/484 66.html.

Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!

Some info about us:

We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.

Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.

Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!

Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.

For detailed mileage, please visit our spreadsheet: http://www.editgrid.com/user/new_cc_worldrunn er/Runners_Log

Sorry for my little rant yesterday - just got to boot myself in the rear and get going.  3.5 miles for me yesterday, followed by a good solid hour of boot camp work.  A good workout all around!
Please add 6.25 miles for me from today.

Thanks!

Jenka I was wondering how it was going with the in-laws!!! I thought of you often and hoped you were having a good time.

kscout we have all been there. Sometimes if that happens to me, I'll give myself a minimum knowing that once I get started I can keep mentally challenging myself to pick it up and then it becomes fun! So, I may start by saying, all I have to do is run to Store X and back. Once I do that, I think, well I did it in 18 mins, I might as well run another 7 mins. Then, I may say to myself, that's nothing, shoot for a last loop around the park. Etc. Etc. Etc. But, don't worry, on those really crappy days, I run to the gym (a block), get on a stationary bike and then run the block back. I'm glad to hear your workout went great in the end!

rk1 glad you're back. I was wondering where you had gone! Super job on the 10K!!! Also, I'm very jealous about going to Hawaii; kudos to you for running while on vaca!

TO ANYONE LIVING IN CHICAGO!!! I will be in Chicago this weekend for a conference and need to know where I can run. I'm staying at the Hilton on South Michigan Ave. I'm sure the hotel has a fitness center, but I'd like to run outside when I can. Please let me know via thread or PM. THANKS!!!

Hi primadonna98- I'm a Chicagoan, and let me just say that you are totally in luck when it comes to running in the city. You will be staying really close to an 18 mile trail that runs parallel to Lake Michigan. To get to the trail, just head east on Balbo (the cross street closest to your hotel, I believe) for maybe a third of a mile. You'll see the trail just after you cross Lake Shore Drive--there will be tons of runners, walkers, and people riding their bikes.

BTW, your hotel is right across the street from Grant Park, another great area for running, so it's a win-win situation for you--there's no need to use the fitness center at all!!

The mileage has been updated.  I will keep a watch out for late posts.

It is not too late to sign up for the Memorial Day Virtual 5K/10K/Half-Marathon Race.

Just post to the link and let us know you are in.  Challenge yourself to a new PR for distance or time, or just make a commitment to record your training run.  Have some fun and kick off the summer!

100 Miles: RK1

*******************Congratulations*********** **************

Keep on running.  There are only 6,457.15 miles to go!  We are almost 3/4 finished with this run.

Good Morning! 3.5 miles for me today. Outside in the glorious spring weather!
6.25 miles for me yesterday.  Was able to run outside - finished 5 miles, then said "what the heck - go for another lap around the park!".
3 miles for me last night

Hi, all!

Primadonna, oh we had a blast with the in-laws! Plus we ate out for almost every meal! That's fun, but not so great on the waistline. Have fun in Chicago, I love that city!

Kscout, seriously, we all have those days. Last night I totally did not want to run, but once I got on the treadmill I was fine. It's just one of those things, ya know?

I've decided to institute a June personal challenge. Longtime RATW members might remember that last fall I did progressively harder challenges each month. Well, my mileage has been really low the past couple of months, and the only way to motivate me is to challenge myself. I'm just competitive enough to force myself to complete it! Not sure what it'll be, though. My last challenge was 130 miles, but since I've backslid so much I might set it at 100. Even THAT would be an improvement!

6.23, thank you.

Thanks for your feedback - It is much appreciated!! I have set my goal of running a marathon in September, and I don't want to jeopardize that goal due to a sudden drop in my motivation.  While I have my training logs set up, I think I might need to set some short term goals.  It is good to know there are others who struggle some days, and it really is a matter of mind games to beat the blah days.  My spouse, friends, coworkers, and gym mates cheer me on - but none of them are runners.  I hope this thread will continue on in some other format after the ratw is finished.
No mileage to report today, just wanted to say a few words to kscout. It's normal for runners to lose motivation after finishing a big race, so don't beat yourself up over it. The fact that you have been able to get back out there, despite how you were feeling a couple days ago suggests that any possible feelings of burnout/fatigue were just temporary. And your 6.25 miles yesterday (including the fact that you ran 1.25 miles more than originally planned) reinforces the notion that you'll be just fine.

I do think that it is a good idea to set some short term goals along the way to help keep you motivated. They can be monthly mileage goals (like setting a goal of 100 miles for the month of June), or time-related goals (like scheduling a 10K race at some point during your training and setting some sort of time goal that aligns with your time goal for the marathon). The important thing is setting up mini-goals that will help you on your way to successfully completing your upcoming marathon. You have something to look forward to at different point, plus you can use them as "little checkpoints" along the way to see how you're doing w/r/t your big goal.

Hang in there kscout. Although we are a virtual community, just know that we are out there cheering you every step of the way!!
Please add another 3.25 miles for me from today.

Thanks!
19 miles for me--13.1 of which was my first Half Marathon.  My goal was to do it in 3 hours; I did it in 2 hours 56 min. 24 sec.  The wind chill for the start was 39 degrees.  It warmed all the way up to 51 degrees.  Awesome fun!!

Lebrowne: EXCELLENT JOB! Yay for finishing your first half marathon! Also: holy crap, that's cold! I would have died.

Kscout: yeah, what wrm2105 said. I agree wholeheartedly.

Anyone got plans over the holiday weekend (those of us in the states)? Besides the Virtual Memorial Day Race, that is. I'll do my 10K tomorrow most likely, otherwise my only other plans are to go shopping and watch dh do yard work. Hee!

lebrowne - Way to go!!!  Good for you for completing and beating your goal for your first half and for running in those cold temperatures - I'm a weenie when it comes to running in the cold or the rain!!  Keep running!

wrm and jenka - thank you - I appreciate the advice from the experienced runners on the thread - it helps me keep things in perspective and helps me build my foundation of experiences and education related to running.

3.7 miles for me for yesterday followed by another great hour of bootcamp at the gym.  The instructor changes up the routine each class, so we never get bored and we work muscles we sometimes didn't know we had!

Wishing everyone a safe and fun holiday weekend.  I have to work tonight and tomorrow night, but I'll have Sunday and Monday off.  Planning a 13.5 mile hike on some vigorous trails on Monday - woohoo!!  Husband and I have been wanting to hike this particular set of trails for a couple of years - finally all the "stars are in alignment" and the weather is scheduled to be fantastic - can't get much better than that.
4 miles this morning.

I haven't run in over a week (eek!  with a 1/2 ironman coming up!!) due to a hip injury.  Looks like the chiropracter fixed me yesterday.  Let's hope it sticks...
5.25 miles for me today.

9.08 miles today :)

Hi, 13.1 miles today (for the Memorial Day Virtual Race). I had my moments where I questioned my sense of sanity for agreeing to run a half-marathon for the Virtual Race DAYS after my marathon, but I stuck with it.
