Mission: Run Around the World--MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!

We're on a mission to Run Around the World!

Please visit the previous incarnation of our thread here: http://caloriecount.about.com/forums/post/484 66.html.

Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!

Some info about us:

We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.

Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.

Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!

Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.

For detailed mileage, please visit our spreadsheet: http://www.editgrid.com/user/new_cc_worldrunn er/Runners_Log

Please add 3.1 miles for me yesterday.

Right there with the rest of you all---at started drinking and smoking in high school, and had been overwieght since age 12.  Briefly got in shape when I was in the Navy, but quickly put the weight back on afterwards.

I swam and biked a little trying to lose weight over the years, and ran only because they made me.  After I got married in 95, we stated doing MS-150 rides, and little by little I started wanting to do more and more on the bike.  Bought myself a nice Litespeed for my 40th B-day, started riding 3000, then 4000 miles per year, but the weight stayed on.

Went into the winter of '06 as heavy as I had ever been, and knew I couldn't take the holiday weight gain on top of it, and finally got serious.  Lost about 40 lbs *in the winter*, and emerged a new person the next year.  I started swimming and competing in master's meets, did my first bicycle race, and ran 2 triathlons last year.  Well, "ran" might be putting it generously....

The enormous disparity in my triathlon legs convinced me I needed to work on the run.  I thought it was an unbelievable challenge to do a 10K, but I signed up for the New Year's challenge, and that's what brought me here.

3 more for me today (Saturday) :-)

4 for me today.

Hi, 14.6 miles for me today.
3 miles on Sunday!
2.5 miles for me, and wrm so true; I have told my husband so many times (when he asks why I decided to take up running at 35 and run my first 1/2 Marathon at 36) that this is something athletic that I can actually do--I was always considered an "egg-head" throughout H.S. and college, not an athlete; I guess it's never too late to become an "athlete"!  Thanks for the post!!

Please add 2.0 miles for me today.

Did my 2nd triathlon of the year---a "mini" (300 yd pool swim, 11 mile bike, 2 mile run).  Won my age group :-)

Way to go, jfk, on winning your age group! That's awesome!

Had a good weekend for everything except running. It's 95 degrees and humid here, just miserable for running. Tried to get out there Saturday morning but it was so Not Fun that I cut the run short. Fortunately Sunday was my day off. Looks like I'll be sticking to the gym for this week at any rate.

Are those of you in AZ and other dry heat places able to run outside when it gets 90 and above? I'm curious, because the humidity is really what kills me, and seems to be what others around me complain about mostly.

How are people doing on their June Personal Challenges? I had planned to run 20 miles in my first week, but I actually ran closer to 25. The challenge pushed me to run a little more than I would have!

If I woke up early enough I would be able to run outside while it's still in the 80's but during the mid to late part of the day when its 100+ I honestly feel like I'm GOING TO DIE. haha

But it really is so different. I've run in North Carolina and the humidity makes it so difficult to breathe but here the such high temp makes me feel like I'm going to suffer from heat exhaustion.

3.48 miles for me please :)

I forgot to post my mileage the prior week: 26.2 (San Diego Marathon)

Last week milage: 100 (San Diego 100)

We get both really dry heat and humidity here in Sydney.  Just depends on where the weather is coming from.  When the winds are coming from the outback, then its that AZ like dry heat where is feels like you are walking into an oven, but otherwise, because we are on the coast, we can get quite a bit of humidity (although not as bad as FL humidity, where I have also done a fair amount of running) so I have run in both.  I run early in the morning, but I do find it easier to run in dry heat, although I really don't mind the heat and can run in either.  However, it is easier for me to not realize how dehydrated I am by running in dry heat and don't think I could run in it anytime but early morning, around sunrise.  Granted, right now it is winter here right now, so while you all are battling the heat in your runs, I have to bundle up and freeze my arse off and do my entire run in the dark since the sun isn't rising until after 6:30 am these days!  Although, its not THAT cold here, probably in the high 40's low 50's most mornings when I go, I just HATE cold!

I forgot to post my mileage from last week (28 May - June 3) so posted it late so I don't think is got added, so I will add it again here

so 24.75 miles for 28 May - June 3

and 25.5 miles for 4 June - 10 June

Heat is the key word in my part of the world.  We have had four days in a row where it has hit 100+ unadjusted for humidity.  jenka and aeetheri I have the same humidity you are dealing with (coastal Virginia).  It feels like a jungle from July until September.  Unfortunately we are getting a head start on the dog days this year.  It was 88 degrees at 5am today.  I am thinking about starting the day an hour earlier.

On the monthly challenge, I am keeping up, but I noticed that 8mi from last week were missed from the tally.  I have 11 so far for this running week and I am planning 4 more for tomorrow morning.

Thanks to everyone for sharing your stories over the last week.  It is good to be in such company.

jfk61: congratulations on the platform finish this weekend!

skinnykitty: hoping for the best on your CT scan.  Taking it easy for a while to heal is not a bad thing.

Happy running.

3.1 miles saturday 7th

6 miles yesterday (monday)

2 miles this morning! i don't know how you guys run at all in humidity, yes it is hot here in Az, but i think the humidity makes it harder to breathe, the air seems thicker. jfk awesome job on your age group that is so cool!!

Wiliwigi, I think we are part of the same heat wave that's hitting the entire east coast. Yesterday I talked to my sister in law in Connecticut, and she said it was 99 degrees there, which is the same as what it is here in Atlanta!

Heatherlanders, I agree that humidity makes it harder to breathe. Heat I don't mind so much. Well, not SO much.

Manta515, I would freeze in the 40s and 50s. I much prefer it warmer. I feel your pain!

Aeetheri, yeah, I would probably also want to die in 100+ temps, no matter what the humidity level is like. There's definitely a limit.

Had my neighborhood running group last night. We ran past a school that had the temp on their sign out front, and it said 97 degrees, at 7:30 pm! There was a breeze so it didn't feel that hot, but I definitely went slowly and only did 4 miles. Tonight I will bask in the overwrought AC in my gym!

Mileage for the last two weeks:

TW: 16 miles (6/4 - 6/10)

LW: 17 miles (5/28 - 6/3)

Forecast is changing for the weekend, highs in the mid 80's, which is good because we have a race scheduled for Saturday.

Correction: 48.7 miles this week.

1.5 miles yesterday on 06/09/08!
