Mission: Run Around the World--MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!
We're on a mission to Run Around the World!
Please visit the previous incarnation of our thread here: http://caloriecount.about.com/forums/post/484 66.html.
Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!
Some info about us:
We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.
Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.
Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!
Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.
For detailed mileage, please visit our spreadsheet: http://www.editgrid.com/user/new_cc_worldrunn er/Runners_Log

6.09 nice and rainy miles today :)
22.31 Miles for me this week. It's been in the nineties with high humidity. It's killing me. I'll get used to it, but I'll be happy to get a 35+ mile week in soon.
Tomorrow is the day i start back for that again.
Jenka, i think the other morning runners around here get a chuckle when they see me because they are running in shorts and short sleeve shirts and I have long tights, a long sleeve shirt and a fleece vest on. Fortunately, winter doesn't last long here and the summers are fantastic. Plus, I live in the northern beaches of Sydney, so I have some fantastic views when I run... unfortunately, right now, my runs are in the dark. I can't wait for summer again, hell I even just take spring!
Today I got 1 mile in! It seems like maybe i'm the slacker here! 1 little mile compared to all of you! I'm trying to work on it! Give me some pointers! Help a girl out!! I did get up to 3 miles at one point but then quit for like 2 weeks when my grandparents died 2 days apart from eachother. Ever since, I am finding it very hard to increase again.
13.5 miles today
I've been taking running seriously now since I decided to run a marathon - that's 16 runs in 6 weeks, nearly 3 a week average.
Today I ran my furthest ever - 13.5 miles. It took me 135 minutes. I don't know how this fares in the grand scheme of things but I had in mind that I'd like to do my half marathon in October in under 2 hours. That gives me 4 months to shave around 15 minutes off my time. Doable?
Ducklingerthank, it's totally doable to run a half in under two hours, if you're willing to work hard. You might possibly think about running your FIRST half marathon just to run it, without time constraints. But if you need something to work towards, a sub-2 hour half is a good goal. For me, distance running isn't about time, and I'm also practically a midget, so I usually run those in the 2 to 2:05 range.
Shannymedic, we've all been there! Just keep plugging away, eventually you will build up your endurance.
Manta, I'd be just like you. I wear layers to keep me warm.
Last night's run in the air conditioned gym was fabulous! Despite my personal environmental beliefs, I have to admit that AC is a necessity in a hot climate. I try to conserve in other ways to make up for that. Sigh.
25 miles for this past week, 4-10 June. Thanks!
milage for week end 6/10: 13.5 miles
Working through Hal hingdon training program for 1/2 marathon at end of August. Hot weather coming at bad time as trying to get used to extended distances and running in heat has been a little tough.
Have 5K tonight -- first evening race and 1st 5K in 2 months as focusing on 10K / 1/2 mara training. Should be interesting to see if the long/slower runs pay off for the speed test of 5K?
shooting to shave 1 min off PR of 24:15 , hopefully at least get in the 23's.
Well reading "The Stories" ... figured I would share.
Like most never liked running, but I was an athlete in a former life. played Football in HS and rugby in college but always looked at anything over 100 yds as a waste of time. Never considered running track (even sprints) as practice was nothing but running (yuck).
After college still worked out a lot but mostly weights and was in good shape and could not gain weight to save my life .... Then Marriage / kids/ desk job / stopped metabolism hit in the mid twenty's and slowly had put on weight and became more of a health risk.
October 2007 was all time weight mark of 221 lbs and had high blood preasure , etc. Decided to dedicate to losing weight and lost twenty lbs in 2 months with no exercise with help of CC. After holdidays started a CC chellenge to lose 30 by April 1st and managed to drop 25 lbs. In order to stay focused decided to pick some races to keep the competive 'ex-jock" juices going. Original goal was just to get to 5K status with outside shot of 10K. Starting in Jan could not run 1/2 mi at a slow pace ... Ran 1st 5k 60 days later Mar 1 and have progressed to 10K in May (finished top 50% 955 out of 2600 runners). figured heading up the mountain there is no sense looking back so aiming for Marathon by end of year. Thought is that is I do not continue on path to get to the top now .... I will never do it. So its 26.2 or bust by October 12 (Just finish baby ... but nice around 4 hrs) ... Now like WRM looking ahead and heck maybe taking a shot at BM qualify time by next Clev Marathon May 2009. Good news is turning 40 by then so time would be 3:30, which although feasible is maybe not likely within a yr...but good to set stretch goals right.
My goal for the coming week is 15 miles.
Hi shannymedic, first let me express my condolences for your family loss. It's tough to lose a grandparent, but to lose two within days of each other--that's got to be brutal. It's totally understandable that you would stop running during that time. Let me also say that there's no need to feel like you're a slacker. Slow and steady is the way to maintain this as a lifetime habit.
I'm not sure how much running you have done before, but have you considered the Couch to 5K program? It teaches new runners, by integrating running with walking, to get to the point where you can complete a 5K. Just google Couch to 5K for more information.
Hey ducklingerthank, I definitely agree with Jenka's advice that one should not set time goals for the first race, especially in major distances such as a half marathon. Your first half should be a fun experience, and if not setting a time goal will help make that happen, then you should follow that advice.
Having said that, I thrive on setting goals; I set a goal of finishing my first half marathon in under two hours, and I set a goal of finishing my first marathon in under 3:30, despite suggestions that I shouldn't. If your goal race is four months away, you definitely have the time to reach your sub-2 hour goal.

Me too (thriving on goals thing). I've set a goal to run a marathon, on the advice of people here I'm doing a half as practice but from the start it's ~6months training to the half and ~12 months to the full and my goals are sub 2 hours and sub 4 hours. I just based that on how I'm doing so far - I really don't know what's good and it will be fun even if I don't make it but it will help me pace myself though so far it seems however far I run I keep to 6mph whether its 3 miles, my usual 6 miles, or todays 13.5. I'm trying to run longer distances then going back to the 6 hoping my time will go down but it doesn't. Still if I can get it down in the next 4 months the fact that I can run long distances at the same pace seems to bode well for the marathon.
Please add 3.1 miles for me yesterday. That should be 8.2 for the week.
These days I'm doing shorter runs, because I also must train cycling. Today I did 2.24 miles of hills (and just to get to and back from the runnable ground I had to cycle 19 miles).
Thanks!
What a week for me to be MIA! I just caught up on all the "stories" and wished I'd checked in more. Add me to the list of "brainiacs" in high school where the most warming up I did was on stage for drama or choir. Fast forward to college where I added beer and midnight pizza/cheesesteak runs and THEN started smoking. I enjoyed being "active," and after grad school, joined a gym and went regularly until I got sick (in a slightly unrelated illness -- another time, another story). Fast forward post surgery when I like most others never realized I was out of shape (due to enjoying being at the gym) until I hit 185 and none of my seasonal clothes fit. I was had gone through horrible GI problems and looked at myself in the mirror and just cried. Then, I kicked myself in the ass, educated myself on eating right and portion control, went back to the gym and started running. I still struggle with portion control and sweets, especially this time of the year when birthdays meet work overload/stress and end of the year parties.
That being said, I just finished the LAZIEST week. The heat hit me hard; I wilted like a flower and refused to leave my air conditioned apartment. So, I ran an amazing 3.2 miles last week (ending yesterday).
On a plus, I HIT ONE OF MY JUNE GOALS!! My 3.2 miles included the local Run the Monk 5K where I shattered my old PR of 29:41 and ran a fantastic 27:58!
Tonight: 2.75 miles as I get back into the groove and enjoy that the heat wave ended.
In other news, I'm updating the mileage tonight. Thanks for posting your miles, everyone! Check back later or tomorrow for updates!

Hang in there, shannymedic. I can't imagine losing 2 grandparents 2 days apart. Two weeks before my wedding my grandmother died, and I remembered reading an article about a man who ran every day -- even on days of funerals and births. I remembered the story in my head and thought, if I run, I'm sure I'll feel better. But I didn't. I couldn't. When I did start running again, I had quite a few runs with tears streaming down my face, but despite that it helped a lot to be by myself both to think about the past and the future and to focus on the now. It made me feel better ultimately, and I started running more. We all grieve in different ways, so you do what you have to do to get through it. When you're ready, running will be there waiting for you.
