Mission: Run Around the World--MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!

Quote  |  Reply

We're on a mission to Run Around the World!

Please visit the previous incarnation of our thread here: http://caloriecount.about.com/forums/post/484 66.html.

Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!

Some info about us:

We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.

Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.

Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!

Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.

For detailed mileage, please visit our spreadsheet: http://www.editgrid.com/user/new_cc_worldrunn er/Runners_Log

Hey, 5.3 miles today.
Please add another 3.1 miles for me from today.

Hmm - runner's knee seems to be back, and I'm at a loss for how to strengthen my knees when the exercises that are meant to help them (lunges, squats) aggravate them?!?!?!
7.3 miles for me

I don't usually run, but I do walk, does that count?

If so, I logged 3.03 miles yesterday. 2.05 today.

Please add 3.1 miles for me today.

4 miles today and I finally got my speed up. Did it in 32 mins - 8min mile instead of usual 10min mile and it could have been faster except just after I started off I decided I needed the bathroom! :(

3.1 miles for me and at a better pace too.  I decided to try 1 minute at my slow pace that's been my norm since the injury, then 1 minute at a more normal jogging pace, back and forth.  It worked out pretty well.  I think I might do this once a week on a shorter run and see how it impacts my speed overall.  I don't want to go crazy with it though since I got all sorts of injuries after doing intervals with every run last year.

One thing I'm big on now is POSTURE!  I keep reminding myself to stand tall - and then even taller.  I think it helps with the injury prevention.
Hi, 9.3 miles today.

Congrats on the increase in pace, ducklingerthank. My guess is that it's due to the increases in mileage at the slower pace. My training goes through cycles like that as well.

Glad to hear that you are seeing an increase in pace, joyfulake, especially since you're coming back from injury. There is an article in Runners World that discusses the value of progression runs. In case you (or anyone else) would like to read about it, here is the link:

http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-244--12650-1-1-2, 00.html

Joyfulake, you are actually only supposed to do interval runs once per week at most.  Also, start out with 5-10 minutes at your slow pace, then do anywhere from 20-35 minutes at intervals, and then finish off with 5-10 minutes at slow pace.  Do that once a week.  Then the next week do what's called a tempo run, where you start 5-10 minutes at a really slow pace, then you increase gradually every 5 minutes or so.  Start at 10 min/mile, up it to 9 min 50 sec/mile for 5 minutes, then up it to 9 min 30 sec/mile for 5 minutes, then up it to 9.15min/mile, etc.  Once you hit your absolute fastest you should be about 40 minutes into the run, and you should only be able to hold it for a couple minutes.  Finish with 5-10 minutes at your slow pace.  Do one of each of these runs (interval and tempo) on alternating weeks.  That's not too much and it'll still get your speed up.

Fitnessfreak, I'm also experiencing some irritating runner's knee.  New shoes are helping a little, but not a lot.  Am taking NSAID every day in the hopes that that'll help.  Plus, more treadmill runs than outdoor ones. Grumble.

Ladyfirelyght, great job on your walking!  We are trying to keep this thread as a runner's motivation, though.  But don't let that stop you, in fact: you should take up running!  Try the Couch to 5K program, it's easy and is a great way to improve your fitness level.

I know, I'm incorrigible.  :-)

Well, I'm TRYING to get into running, if that counts. Can I join in and only count the days I actually run? By the way, I've tried C25K and unfortunately it just doesn't work for me. I tried it for a couple weeks and it didn't help me get running well. I've been working on my own plan and I went from only running for a minute at a time to now being able to run for 20 minutes Laughing

Ladyfirelyght: YES!  Excellent!  If you find a method that feels right to you, then I say go for it.  We'll gladly take your running mileage, and we'll also keep you motivated!

jenka - Thank you for the explanation regarding interval and tempo runs.  The magazine articles and books I've read haven't helped me understand what those types of runs are like.  I've written down your explanations in my running log so I can better plan my runs for the week.

13.3 miles for me today.  Completed the first 13.1 in 2:32:37, 17 seconds off my time from the April half marathon.  I'm hoping to finish my marathon in September in under five hours, so I still have some work to do to get a little speedier, but I believe I can realistically accomplish that goal.

Thanks again to my fellow runners who shared encouraging words when my motivation was flagging.  It feels good to be back to the point where I am looking forward to each run and enjoying the time spent running!

Well, here's my first running contribution: 2 miles! I just got done with it and I'm cooling down now. I didn't think I could do it, but I did! I was actually just trying to beat my record time of running for 20 minutes, I did 21. Good enough and I ran harder than I did three days ago. I actually cheered each time I did another minute past 16 because I was starting to feel tired. I'm stoked.

3 miles for Amy, weeeeeeeee!

Have a great weekend everyone and, of course, Happy running!!

13.1 miles today in 1:55. SO pleased! :D

June goal was 80 miles(5,25,25,25) and so far I've done 60.3 (9.1,20.5,30.7) so looks like I'm on track.

I want to do the exact same half mary in about 10 days-I was thinking exactly 10 days so June 31st to round June off nicely but June only has 30days! So I think I'll do it July 1st and see if I can get my time down anymore.

July goal = just 60 miles because I'm going to Egypt for 2 weeks so I'll focus on my swimming instead while I'm there and try to do about 25-30 in the 6 days before I go and 30-35 in the 10 days after.

please add 2 this morning please

Hi, 5.95 miles today.

Please add 11.3 miles for me so far this week.  Thanks!

2 measly miles off the bike yesterday (getting ready for a sprint in two weeks).

jenka:  Thanks for the interval/ tempo info.

wrm:  That article is truly awesome.  I tend to give 'er the whole way through and it usually ends in some sort of muscle injury.  Thanks.  With any luck I'll be able to get my 5k in under 25 minutes for my sprint (I'm always much faster off the bike) and then I'll be able to do my 10 (for an olympic) in under 50 (??Tongue out??  Okay, so I know it doesn't work that way, I just wish it did!)

please add 5.25 for me today!!
