Mission: Run Around the World--MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!
We're on a mission to Run Around the World!
Please visit the previous incarnation of our thread here: http://caloriecount.about.com/forums/post/484 66.html.
Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!
Some info about us:
We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.
Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.
Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!
Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.
For detailed mileage, please visit our spreadsheet: http://www.editgrid.com/user/new_cc_worldrunn er/Runners_Log

Remember, ANYONE is welcome to join, and everyone is welcome back, no matter how long you've been away. Happy running!
Sorry about the delay folks.
Hi everyone! I'm back from LA! I had the most wonderful vacation. I couldn't believe how COLD it was there! We stayed in Santa Monica, and in the evenings the cold breeze made it impossible for me to wear a sundress. I did wish I'd brought my running shoes, though, because it was flat and even during the day only 75 degrees with zero humidity and cool, cool breeze. Oh well.
Then I came home to Atlanta where it's 90 degrees and 90% humidity. Bleh. Friday morning I ran to the finish line of the Peachtree Road Race and got to see the elite runners cross -- that was AWESOME. The winner finished in 28 minutes! The winning female finished in, I think, about 31-32 minutes! It was incredible. I'm going to try to qualify for this race next year, in order to get into the slowest seeded category I'll have to finish a 10K in under 55 minutes before next March. I can do it, but I'll have to train! Running home from the Peachtree was horrendous, it was hot, humid and miserable. But I got a total of 9 miles in that one day.
CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who finished their June Challenge! I'm so proud of all of you! I'll need a little bit of time to collect all of your results, and then I'll post 'em for all to cheer you on!
Ducklingerthank: um, yeah, I think that .2 of a mile of walking, or cool down, or whatever could be counted towards finishing your goal. Or, I would say, screw that, .2 miles away from your goal is still completing the challenge!
To all: start thinking about your July Challenges! We're already 1 week in!
I'M BAAAAAACK!! ![]()
Egypt was amazing. I was in absolute awe standing in front of buildings & items that were in existence before Christ. The school we worked at in Suez was uplifting and incredible. I did do a 1 mile run on a treadmill the first da there to beat the jetlag... and then, my running gear sat dormant. :-) ducklingerthank, have fun! I just saw you will be headed there soon. Have you been there before? Bring sunblock and bugspray. I'll post pictures as soon as my lazy butt uploads them from my camera.
I'm doing my best to get caught up on posts, so bare with me. Congrats to all the June challenges accomplished!!! I missed my mileage by about 4 miles, which I was happy with. I came back more jetlagged than expected and bombarded by allergies. ACK. It's true that the heat without humidity is sooo much better than with it.
Ok, miles...
June 18 - 24 -- 1 mile
June 25 - July 1 -- 0 miles
This week:
Wed. July 2 -- 2.35 miles
Sun. July 6 -- 3.0 miles
I hope to get more miles in by tomorrow. My goal for July is 50 miles (yikes, I better get running). I lacked a lot of motivation after 14 days of not running, so my first run last week was AWFUL! I felt like I'd just put running shoes on for the first time... yikes. I may stick to a treadmill for a week or so until I get the umph and focus back.
I would also like to share something from the June issue of Runner's World (I know I'm behind, but I'm trying to catch up on the issues I didn't read due to the trip). I hope it motivates everyone and reminds us of why we are here as we set July (or long-term) goals. (It's from the Ask Miles section:)
Dear Miles,
I'm new to the sport. Why do so many runners dislike being called joggers?
Jogging imples that you lack passion and commitment, that you're out there on the road in $130 running shoes simply for show, that you could take the sport or leave it (and often do leave it). Ask any runner, and he or she will tell you that we run with passion, we run to push our limits and to live healthier lives, we run races not because we think we'll win but to be members of a larger community. Most important, whether we clock six-minute or 12-minute miles, we don't jog -- we run.
Amen! Happy running!
wow Egypt, how super fun. glad your back!!!! please add 2.5 this morning. total of 10.95 so far for july, 39.05 to go
6.53 miles please :)
As far as that "jogger" vs "runner" thing, I have to say it's kind of silly that our community is so hung up on these words - and creating anew meaning for them that you wouldn't find in a dictionary. I know that I am so slow that I am really jogging, not running. In fact, I doubt I could sustain a real run for a whole mile, let alone a whole race. But I am very passionate about running/jogging - probably more than anything else in my life right now! When talking to other runners, I say the correct word (run), but when talking to non-runners, I have to remind myself to say the accurate word (jog). If I tell non-runners that I ran 5 miles, it gives the false impression of me actually running for 5 miles. I feel that by calling myself a runner when I'm really just jogging is saying a lie that makes me sound better than I am. I know that it means something else in the jogging community - oops running community, but to the rest of the world, it's boastful and dishonest. And I feel that little twinge of conscience reminding me I'm telling a lie when I say I ran a 5K or ran a half marathon. I doubt I ever went faster than a 10 minute mile! That is not running!
To me "jogging" has no implications about how much you spend on your shoes or whatever else Runners World says - it just means how fast you go! Am I too hung up on semantics? I'd love your thoughts even though I'm probably the only one with this viewpoint.
Didn't run today - did hills on the elliptical trainer and weights. Got a big backpacking trip coming up at the end of the month and I'm starting to do more "climbing" type stuff with my workouts to get my legs and knees in shape.
Out of town for a couple days so I didn't log last week: 1.9mi. Hope everyone had a great holiday!
As for running/jogging - I say the same thing: I say "running" when I'm talking to runners because it implies dedication and intent, I say "jogging" when I'm talking to non-runners because to say anything else implies things about my speed and stamina that just aren't true. When I'm alone with my sneakers and body, I say "gettting out there and getting going!"
Hi guys, I've been seeing this thread around for ages and finally figured I'd join, since running is pretty much like crack for me (and I'm training for collegiate XC, so there will eventually be 50 mile weeks). Is it okay if I just jump in? If so, I ran 4 miles today. :)
Add 5 miles for me for yesterday.
I'll be later to post my miles today--I'm trying to get myself motivated enough to today's speed workout (damn humidity).
And welcome back, primadonna98!
2.15 this morning for me thank you!! have a great day!!
RE: running versus jogging.
Joyfulake, I see what you're saying about the difference between the two terms being speed more than anything else. The term "jogging" does imply "slower." But the reason why I think it implies that is because it actually means less committment, less training, less passion, and thus its implication is slower and less athletic. Every body is different, some just can't go as fast as others. Although I've never met you, I do know that you are committed to running and that perhaps your body is geared towards a slower pace. I'm 5 feet tall, so I have to push it all the time to keep up a fast pace, while my best friend, who's 5'8", keeps to her slowest pace when we run together. Is it embarrassing to me that I work so hard and yet still run slower than other people? Yes. Do I consider myself a jogger simply because I'm running at HER jogging pace? Absolutely not.
Primadonna, interesting topic! I don't read Runner's World so I wouldn't have seen it. Thanks for posting. And WELCOME BACK!
