Mission: Run Around the World--MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!

Quote  |  Reply

We're on a mission to Run Around the World!

Please visit the previous incarnation of our thread here: http://caloriecount.about.com/forums/post/484 66.html.

Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!

Some info about us:

We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.

Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.

Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!

Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.

For detailed mileage, please visit our spreadsheet: http://www.editgrid.com/user/new_cc_worldrunn er/Runners_Log

Jenka, I think you have it backwards.  Jogging does mean slower, and it may imply less commitment, training, passion.  (you said the opposite)  The actual definition of jogging has nothing to do with commitment or passion (as far as I know!)  And, from what I know about your speeds, Jenka - you do run! :-)

Anyway, I don't mean to be confrontational.  I just had to comment on that.  When I had read it in the magazine a few weeks ago, it struck a chord and I'm glad to have the opportunity to discuss it with other runners.  When I read it, my first reaction was relief that it's ok that I've called what I do "running" even though I'm only at 5.5 mph because I definitely fit the descrition of a "runner" vs a "jogger."  My second reaction was slight confusion because I know that what I'm doing is not running.  When I sprinted in the junior high track team, that was running.

In any case, I don't want to make waves.  I'm content to conform to the running community and call it "running."   Just wanted to see if anyone had thoughts similar to mine.

Joyfulake, yeah, I can see your logic there.  Although I would contend that 5.5 mph is indeed running.  Certainly sprinting on the track team is even faster than just running, though!  Sprinting is a different league altogether. I guess all I'm saying is I think you may be too hard on yourself.  And don't worry about being confrontational: I can handle a good discussion!  Bring it on, sister!

So, it's Tuesday and I've already gone to the gym!  Shocker, I know.  Please add 23 miles for me from this week, ending 8 July.

Please add 8 miles for me from today. Thanks!
3 miles today
Please add 3.7 for the week ending July 1st.
Please add 31.2 miles for the week ending July 8th.

Thank you.
Hey there, please add 5.2 miles for last night to close up the week.

Thanks! (And Jenka - I'm glad for the discussion and I'm glad you didn't feel confronted or anything :-) )

1.0 mile for me - just a little bit of an easy run yesterday.

We're really getting close to done - did we decide what our next run is going to be?  How about a run that goes through every country in the world?

Week end July 8: 10.5 miles

Was a light week after 10K and trying to rest "runners knee".  I think I have it worked out with the rest and doing Quad/knee strengthing.  We will see as we ramp back up.

Hey there--14 miles today.

1.25 on the treadmill after weights!!

5.4 miles for yesterday - 17.7 miles for the week.  I've been reading the discussion on running versus jogging.  For my half marathon, I averaged an 11:40 minute mile - so I guess some would say I jogged my way through.

I am 5'4", and I was not built for speed.  However, I am like the Energizer Bunny when I go out for a run - I keep going, and going, and going....  Interval training, hill training, and tempo runs have resulted in a slight increase in speed, but nothing spectacular in the grand scheme of the sport of running.  I stand in awe of those who run 5Ks in 14 minutes, half marathons in just over an hour, and marathons in less than 2 1/2 hours.  Because of the effort I put into my running, I have an even greater appreciation for those who attain those levels of performance.  They inspire me to keep driving forward to reach my personal best.

When I run, I run at over 90% of my theoretical maximum heart rate.  I may not be speedy, but my level of cardio fitness is pretty high, and my heart rate tells me I am working out at a high level of effort.  So I call myself a runner - I set goals, I train, I research, and I seek out others who also enjoy this sport.   I run alone, except for the time I get in on the treadmill at the gym - even then, I am the only one still running an hour or two later - everyone else has finished and gone home :-)  I am very glad I stumbled upon this thread -- I appreciate the discussions, the advice, and hearing about others' experiences.

Just my two cents' worth.

Please add 9.8 more miles for me to finish off last week... more miles to come!

I ran 5 miles on Wednesday.

5.3 miles for yesterday.  Very intense bootcamp class the hour before the run - lots of cardio and leg work.  Finished up with 45 minutes with the weights after the run.  Life is good!

So, are people wanting to do a July Challenge?  If so, post your goals!

When I did the June challenge it never occurred to me that other people would want to do one, too, so I planned a vacation for the last weekend which distracted me.  But I don't have any vacations planned in July, so I'll be able to nag you, support you, and generally be a pain in the ass until you complete it!

My July Challenge is: 110 miles and 4 weight sessions (1 per week).

3.5 miles for me from yesterday please and 8 miles from today.
Hi, 5.3 miles today. As of this morning, I have completed 91.5 miles out of 280 for this month's challenge.

Wow, I didn't think the post would stir the pot as much as it did. But I'm glad!!! joyfulake, you make good points, but I think (humbly) you are getting caught up in the semantics. What I took from the question and response was that, so many people do get caught up in the semantics. The terms are relative. The elite runners still "jog" on a day off or a light day. But their "jog" is still much faster than my "run." And I run and jog, it depends on my training goals for the day. Lately, after that brief hiatus, I've been doing much more "jogging," which is what I need. But I still run races and events. After all, it's not called a 5K jog/walk, it's called a 5K run/walk. And the sport isn't called Jogging, it's called Running. So, it doesn't matter who my audience is -- I'm a runner.

I don't know how long you've been reading Runner's World, but the debate picked up quite a bit about a year ago, when the magazine ran an ad that distinguished runners and joggers. The ad made me (and many other readers) a little frustrated. In his column in the November 2007 issue, John Bingham wrote a fantastic response called, "I Am Not a Jogger." I put it in a journal entry on my profile.  You can click on my picture to get the link or go to http://caloriecount.about.com/users/primadonn a98/202218.html. I was going to post it here, but it seemed kind of long. Although, I would love to here why everyone else calls themself a runner.

Anyway! 3.55 miles yesterday.

Like you, wrm2105, this humidity has me wilting, although your 91+ miles toward your goal is fantastic! I can't seem to get up early enough to beat it, and it's still too thick at night. Jenka, thank you sooo much for posting the June challenge results. What a fabulous addition to the thread!

EDIT: Jenka, what happened to your plumbing?? Did it get worked out? I just briefly read the threads so I probably missed the one with the update. Tell me -- did you rob a bank?!! ;-)

Did a nice and easy 5K after a mile swim in a duathlon they have every Thursday out here. I'm kinda amazed at how little my pace suffers after a swim--much worse coming off the bike :-)
