We're on a mission to Run Around the World!

Please visit the previous incarnation of our thread here: http://caloriecount.about.com/forums/post/484 66.html.

Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!

Some info about us:

We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.

Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.

Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!

Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.

For detailed mileage, please visit our spreadsheet: http://www.editgrid.com/user/new_cc_worldrunn er/Runners_Log

Good morning everyone!  Congrats to all of us for exceeding 20,000 miles!  That's so excellent!

Primadonna, I like your explanation.  Yes, the words mean different things, but in reality the semantics distract from the real issue.  Last night I was on the treadmill, and the woman to my left was running (really hoofing it!) at 5.2 mph, and the woman to my right was running at 7.6.  And I was in the middle, literally, around 6.4.  I thought it was an interesting juxtaposition, as though it were a physical manifestation of our little debate, because we were all really workin' it.

Yeah, the plumbing was bad news.  We had the pipes roto-rooted, but it's really just a quick fix, and the entire system needs to be replaced.  Since we are planning a major renovation on the house, we decided to put it off until then.  And yeah, I'm seriously thinking about robbing a bank!  Thanks for asking!

In other news, I'm having serious knee pain.  It was really noticeable while I was running last night, and it hurt all night afterward.  I had hoped while I was on vacation that it would heal, but apparently it didn't.  I'm taking today and the weekend off, and hoping by Monday it's better.  If not, I may have to stay off it for a bit.  BOO!

I'm off to Boston this afternoon for the weekend.  Got a family event that I need to be at, and a high school mini-reunion.  Have a great weekend, everyone!

Jenka - hope you knee pain goes away soon!

And, yeah, I get caught up on semanitcs.  I can be a pain in the a$$ sometimes, but at least I know it.

Anyhow, please add 4 miles for me for last night.

I'm debating whether I want to try the extremely steep 6 mile loop or do smaller flatter loops that would add up to about the same distance.  I used to do the hilly 6-miler all the time last year, but haven't attempted it since the injury...  Maybe I'll see how hot it is and let the weather decide.

Hi, 12 miles for me today.

Have a great time in Boston, jenka!
16 miles for me today.  Husband served as my mobile road crew, driving ahead every 2.5 miles so I could get in water and/or carb gels.  I thought I was going to have to run eight out and eight back; it was great to just run out the full 16 without any repeats.  We live in a rural area, so I was able to run through three towns.  Well, we call them towns -- one has a flashing light, one has a traffic light, and one has no flashing/traffic lights!!

First 14 miles were relatively easy, even though I had to run more hills than I have in a while.  First hill after mile 14 was a killer.  Didn't think I'd make it up to the top.  Those last two miles were tougher than the first 14 put together.  But I made it - and now have a new long run distance!

I'm a dedicated runner here...  how do I get myself added?

sordino, thanks for joining!  Just post your mileage here, either every day or once a week in a summary.  Our weeks run from Wednesday to Tuesday, so you should show up in the totals then.

Welcome aboard!

Hi sordino, all you have to do is report your miles on this thread. BTW, our weeks run from Wednesday to Tuesday. So feel free to report either after every run or once a week (by Tuesday night or Wednesday morning). We hope you'll join us--welcome. We're a diverse group, ranging from brand new runners to marathoners/ultramarathoners and triathletes.

Hey kscout, great job on your 16 mile long run today!! The last couple of miles are often tougher than all other miles combined, but I'm glad to see that you toughed it out. I hope that you are rewarding yourself with a massage or some other special treat.

I have a question for the experienced runners here with regards to running a half marathon.  My orginal goal when I started running at the end of last year was to do a half marathon on early 2009 (didn't think I would be even remotely ready to do one beforehand).  Anyway, I am now up to the point mileage wise where I have no doubt I could run one in a few weeks if I wanted to.  Anyway, the sydney marathon/half marathon in on Sept. 21 and I would REALLY like to run it, BUT, the problem is this... we have a week long dive holiday scheduled to Vanuatu 2 weeks before the half marathon (we will be there from sept 5-13) and because we will be on a little island, chances are I will have little to no opportunity to do any training runs the whole week.  Plus, we will be doing 2+ dives every day so time will be limited as well.

So, my question is this, will having to take the week off prior to the week before the half really effect me poorly and should I not bother doing it this year, or will it not really be too much of a problem?  Any suggestions on how to alter my training to incorporate this are also welcome as well.

Sordino, welcome!

Kscout - awesome!!!  And you're lucky to have a husband who's so supportive and helpful.

Manta - congrats for reaching your goal early.  As long as there's a treadmill at your hotel, or something, I think you should sign up.  Remember, the weeks right before your half-marathon, you need to taper.  My training schedule had my "long" run as only 6 miles the week before the race.  You still need to do fairly frequent shorter runs, but you don't have to (and shouldn't) do a really long run.  A 6-miler shouldn't take up too much of your vacation time.  Here is my schedule for the last 2 weeks for my half-marathon training schedule.

M-rest, T-6 miles, W-3 mi, R-rest/cross-train,  F-4 mi, Sa-6 mi, Sun-rest.

M-5 mi, T-3 mi, W-rest/cross-train, R-2mi, F-rest, Sat- race day!

------

Please add 6 miles for me for yesterday.  I decided to take the steep hill route because it's shadier than the flatter route.  I was much slower than the last time I did it (pre-injury) which was back in November, but at least I did it.  Next time I'll need to bring some water along though.  I stepped on a scale when I got back and I lost 5 lbs from sweat!!!  Talk about dehydration!

Hi everyone! Add another 5.3 miles for me today.

Nice job with making progress towards running a half marathon, manta515. I totally agree with what joyfulake has said. You'll definitely want to take advantage of tapering in the two to three weeks before the half marathon. And I think that the diving you'll be doing in Vanuatu (that is so awesome, BTW), will be a terrific substitution for the training runs you originally had scheduled. Besides, you'll still have a few days after your trip to get in a few short runs just before the race. So my suggestion is to GO FOR IT.

How did you feel after your run (aside from the dehydration), joyfulake? Were you able to get through it without your old injury resurfacing?

Thanks!   I will post my mileage on Tuesday then.

Thanks joyfulake and wrm2105 for the advice.  As for there being a treadmill at our resort... HIGHLY unlikely.  We will be on a VERY TINY island in the south pacific with traditional style (modified for tourist comforts of course) huts on the beach as our accomodation. We stayed at a similar place in Fiji two years ago and believe me when I say, the island will be VERY basic.  From looking at the island via google earth, it looks like its probably about a mile or so around the whole thing, so I may be able to get a few short runs in, but I think I might go mental running a circle around the island too many times (of course, I am sure it will give the islanders something ti chuckle about!)  Plus, the weather will be quite hot and humid, but morning runs will be out because of the diving... and there is always the time sucker better known as my two year old daughter that we will be dealing with while we are on vacation!  Also, I know from experience when I do running and diving on the same day, my legs can really suffer.  I recall once being underwater after a rather rough hill run and felt like I could barely kick (and being a dive instructor with tons of dives under my belt, I have NEVER felt like that before, I just wanted to lay down on the bottom of the ocean and DIE!).  Anyway, I had a think about this morning on my long run (11 miles!) and figure that I should go for it (so what if I don't make it in the time I am shooting for, completing it will be an accomplishment in itself).   I can do my last longer run the day before we leave, and TRY to get one or two short runs in while we are there, and then finish tapering the week we return.  I don't want to have to wait another year to do this run, it goes over the sydney harbor bridge and past the opera house along the water.

Thanks again for the advice!

manta - That sounds like an awesome run!!  Don't forget to have fun while you are away!!!
Hi, 20 miles today.
Hi,

3.1 miles from my sprint last Sunday and another 4 miles today.

My hip needs stretching and more stretching -- the scan didn't reveal any fractures.  If it still hurts next month, I'll have to go for an MRI.

Missing this thread and feeling way left out of the loop.  (Funny thing about the jogging question, I was asking myself just that this morning.)

kscout:  LOL!  I'm the canadian version of the energizer bunny!

PS:  As a proud aside, I must announce that my twin 7 year-olds won 2nd and 3rd place at their first triathlon of the season yesterday.  I think they've finally understood the concept of a race!
Skinny kitty - good luck on the hip thing.  I feel your pain (almost literally).  If you're getting PT while waiting for the MRI, don't let them delay the MRI.  My physical therapists kept wanting to try new things and delaying the follow-up appt with the orthopedist.  By the time I finally got the MRI and the green light to run again, I hadn't run in months.  Unrelatedly, be careful what you wish for with your kids understanding racing.  If you have twins racing together, I imagine they will soon become very aware of what racing is all about and will get extremely competitive with each other.

Wrm2105 - your distances amaze me.  In response to your question about how the steep six-miler went, it was ok.  As long as I don't go too fast it seems my hip/groin pain is manageable.  It's always there, but I can ignore it.  I'm also not killing myself with distances.  I'm intentionally increasing my distances very slowly.  Seems to be working ok.  The only time the pain was hard to ignore was last week when I was feeling especially strong and pushed myself too much.  In my 4 mile run I did the first 2 miles as fast as I could.  I had to walk for about a minute to catch my breath.  When I started jogging again, the pain was pretty bad.

---

Please add 3 miles for me today.  I found a great trail route in the state park near me.  Mostly even footing, pretty sights.  I even saw a deer just a few feet away!

Just returned yesterday from a trip to the mountains.  As a flat land, sea-level, coastal runner I could never understand the considerable glee expressed by many of you regarding hills.  So, while away I applied myself to the hill test and had a surprisingly good experience.  A total of 5 miles over 2 days on the hills and only 2 miles on a treadmill in the fitness center.  I could see an immediate difference when I got home.  Now I must find some place to train with hills that does not require a significant drive.

skinny_kitty: What a great parent moment.  Thanks for sharing! My favorite running is with my daughter.

please add 3 today thanks!! 32.60 to go!

So many wonderful things happened over the weekend! Way to go everyone! Joyfulake, go you for choosing the hills and double yay for the pain management (wait, that didn't come out right -- but you know what I mean right?). kscout, wow!!! 14 miles!!! Fantastic! Manta, it sounds like you got great advice, so I'll stick with -- VANUATU! ;-) Wiliwigi -- welcome to the wonderful world of hills! We are happy to have you. And a general welcome to sordino!!

Jenka, be careful. You are smart to rest. Do you plan on going to a doctor or waiting it out? Keep us updated. I'm glad to hear the plumbing issue has a band-aid until you can afford (financially and time wise) to fix it all. What a blech thing. Hope your time in Boston was fun! Skinny_kitty, congrats to your kids -- how wonderful to share this aspect of your life with them! I was thinking about you yesterday (and jfk) when a friend suggested triathalons due to her injury recovery. At one point in my life I was like, HELL NO but now, I'm hearing it and thinking, hmmm could I do that? But it will have to wait until after we move when I might have access to a pool.

Whew, all that being said -- 3.5 miles today. (still on a treadmill... I'm seriously worried about this 10 miler that I ambitiously scheduled before Egypt)

I'm having major motivation issues, even with the July challenge. I'm okay once I start running, but getting myself out there is tough sometimes. Any advice?

Thanks for all of the encouragment everyone!  I honestly still can't believe I progressed so fast, but I am not complaining.

Anyway, 28.5 miles for me this past week (ending July 15)
