Mission: Run Around the World--MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!
We're on a mission to Run Around the World!
Please visit the previous incarnation of our thread here: http://caloriecount.about.com/forums/post/484 66.html.
Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!
Some info about us:
We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.
Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.
Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!
Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.
For detailed mileage, please visit our spreadsheet: http://www.editgrid.com/user/new_cc_worldrunn er/Runners_Log

Week July 9 to July 15 -- 31.8 miles Highest weekly mileage to date -- Woohoo!!
July Challenge Goal: 100 miles July Miles to July 15 -- 52.1 On track to meet or exceed my goal.
wrm - thanks for fixing my mileage from last week!
1.0 for me today, 2.0 on Monday
Gee, kscout, I'd sure love to have someone squirting water at ME while working out. You're making boot camp sound pretty good!
2.0 miles last night.
Sorry everyone -- I'm updating the miles this morning. Hang in there. I forgot which week was mine.Ignore that! It wasn't my week at all. Whoo hoo!!! Thank you wrm2105!!
Everyone's chugging along so well! Great job, everyone! Those of you doing July Challenges, please report on your progress now that we're halfway through the month.
I've had to abandon my July challenge, unfortunately. There's just no way I can manage 110 miles with this knee. Ran 3.5 miles last night and then did another 3 on the elliptical, and the knee isn't all that happy. It's a struggle to keep the mileage down, though!
***************MILESTONES (Week ending 7/15)***************
300 MILES: kscout (335.01)
1000 MILES: fitnessfreak (1025.10)
********************************************* ***********
Meanwhile, it looks like several of us might be reaching milestones next week. Keep it up everyone--we are almost at 86% to goal. It looks like we'll be finished in early September.
Great job everyone!!
Jenka that totally stinks. Hang in there; you know what you are doing is the right thing to do. Maybe you should create a new July challenge that challenges you to keep the mileage down and crosstrain? Just throwing it out there. Congratulations to the Mileage Markers!!! Fitnessfreak --1000 MILES!!! Kscout you are moving fast!! Didn't you just join the site?!
In order to celebrate my surprise day off (a therapist that I was scheduled to oversee called out sick) AND me not messing up which mileage calculation week was mine, I'm posting something to motivate everyone. Maybe I'll dig around for some other discussion worthy topics. How's that for a run-on sentence??
I've taken this from John "The Penguin" Bingham's website: Dear John: Letters to the Penguin. Can anyone tell he's one of my favorites? You can find this and other letters at: http://rodale.typepad.com/the_penguin/
July 10, 2008 Motivation to Keep Trying
Dear John,
After getting out of the military several years ago I gave up on running. I had never liked it and found it boring. Two children and about 60 extra pounds later I decided I needed to get back in to shape. I mapped out a schedule and set off on my journey.I should tell you that I am still overweight but very dedicated to my running and cross training. I entered a 10-K race that had a 90-minute time limit and a very small field of runners. When we took off from the starting line I was left going my slow comfortable pace while the rest of the field blazed away. It was discouraging but I continued on to finish in 1 hour 25 minutes, just under the cutoff and third from last.
I had been running well during training, yet when race day came, all the strength and motivation seemed to leave. I don't want to give up on running. Do you have ideas on why this may be happening and any suggestions on how to keep the motivation going? Even though I am slow, I have come to enjoy my time out on the roads. I just want to get better. - Jenny
Hi Jenny,
Thanks for the great e-mail. You have identified one of the most difficult parts of becoming a runner. How do you enjoy the process if the outcome isn’t what you expect? Well, the good news is, you can.
I finished last, or nearly last, in lots of races. One time, at a 10-K in Little Rock, Arkansas, by mile one I couldn’t see anyone in front of me. Luckily, another participant was kind enough to stay with me so that I wouldn’t get lost.
It can be discouraging if you’re comparing yourself to everyone else out there. I don’t. I only compare the “me” that I am now with the “me” that I used to me. As I tell people, if you think I look bad running, you should have seen me drunk.
I also remind myself that I am a work in progress. Even after nearly 17 years of running and walking I’m not what I want to be. Some goals I now realize that I’ll never achieve. Others, like completing a 50-K or 50-mile event, are still out there somewhere.
So, line up proud. You’re out there. You’re giving it your best shot. You’re changing your life with your own two feet. And that is something to celebrate!
Waddle on,
John
fitnessfreak - congrats on the 1K MILES!!!!
And to think, before my injury, I thought I might catch up to you someday!! LOL!!!
primadonna - thanks for the inspiration - I promise not to start any debates this time!
Please add 3.1 miles for me for yesterday. I did a 5K which was hillier than I had expected, but did fairly well, considering. UNFORTUNATELY though, my "brilliant" idea of putting my timing chip on my sportswatch (velcro wristband=easy removal - perfect!) was pretty stupid. I guess the sensors must be near the ground because there was no record of me finishing the race!
I think I'll buy a piece of velcro to attach to my shoe for future races. I hate having to stop and untie my shoe right after running as fast as I can through the finish line.
joyfulake -- we welcome the debates!!! I think many of us like the different viewpoints and often learn something in the process. So, debate away! ;-) That stinks about your timing chip!! But at the same time, way to go for doing a 5K! I agree, mid-week 5Ks -- well races of any kind -- are fun. Heck, even just evening ones. I love not having to wake up early or hope I use the bathroom before I leave the house.
I also hate having to stop to untie my shoes post-race. Lately a few of the races I've done have used twist ties or similar which makes it easier post-race. I'm usually so exhausted that I rip the darn thing off pretty quickly (adrenaline I imagine). One race used a timing chip that was in the bib. It was pretty cool but I don't think as accurate (it felt like it added time AND it still started with the gun) AND I didn't get to keep the bib (I personally keep all the bibs and write my finish time on it).
EDIT: PS -- I'm glad you liked the post. It was a nice summary of how I've been feeling lately in trying to regain ground post-14 day break & in preparation for a 10 mile run I signed up for pre-break. I've been trying really hard to remind myself that right now just running the 10 miler in Aug. will be a huge accomplishment.
Meanwhile, w/r/t to July Challenge, including this morning's run, I am at 168.0 miles (versus goal of 280).
Sorry to hear about your knee, jenka. Does your knee still hurt when your on the elliptical?
I've been there with the timing chip issues, joyfulake. The timing chip for my first two races were the ones you hook on to your shoe with the plastic thingy (whatever it's called), but for this race (my first 5K), the "chip" was attached to the bib. Not knowing that was the case, I removed it before the race, only to realize just as we were getting started that what I removed was what would be used to record our time. So I ran my first 5K without an official time. It's probably a good thing, since I had a crappy race that day.
I had a great 3.5 mi. run this morning. It feels like I have finally gotten back the momentum I lost in June.
kscout - I love your posts! I can identify with the energizer bunny comparison. Great job meeting your halfway point mileage!
jenka - Pain is a useful tool, you are doing the right thing listening to your body. Like you I am always bummed when I cannot meet a goal. (See my June collapse) Take care of yourself and you will be back at it.
primadonna98 - Thanks for the article. I always need to remember what the race is about, finishing well.
wrm - I cannot imagine running that many miles in one month. Your training regime is incredible.
primadonna -- I joined ratw in March of this year, just happened to stumble upon the thread - and now I'm hooked!
joyfulake - thanks for getting discussions started - I enjoy hearing others' points of view. This is a great sport - and this thread keeps me motivated in my training.
Very hot and humid today - so will get my run in at the gym. Bootcamp is a lot of fun, although not as strenuous as I'd like it to be much of the time. Instructor has to cater to the majority - and if he pushes too hard, they won't come back to class. Quite a few did not show up for class at the pool - either too embarassed to be seen in a swimsuit or initimidated by the type of workout we would have is my guess. It's a shame - they are losing out on a great workout. Many will probably not be there tonight either. Oh well - the diehards will be there - and most of them, including my son, will have done a hardcore tae kwon do workout the hour before the bootcamp class. My instructor would like me to get back into tkd after the marathon in September - wants me to work toward my black belt (now at purple trim - but haven't trained in several years). Anyway, the bootcamp class is helping with my running. I have a stronger core and my arms don't fatigue on long runs.
Damn, I had to go to the second page to find this thread! Que pasa?
Primadonna, I too like The Penguin. He has always been my inspiration when my friends run marathons in 3 hours and I can barely finish a half marathon under 2 hours. Not only is he inspiring, but he shows that you don't have to be an elite athlete to successfully complete long distances. Thank goodness! I'm short and slow, but, like kscout says, I'm also the energizer bunny (i.e. I have excellent endurance). I'm sure you will do great on your 10-miler!
Joyfulake, I totally agree, keep the discussions coming! I like debate! Too bad about the timing chip. Most of my timed races use those twist ties that tie onto your laces, and someone else usually rips them off for me.
Wrm, check, got your status update for July challenge. Excellent progression! Yes, my knee does much better on the elliptical. Last night I did the stationary bike and then elliptical and today my knee feels much better. I'm going to continue doing low running mileage but keeping my fitness level up using other methods, and I'm confident my knee will heal soon. Thanks for asking!
Williwigi, It sucks though, doesn't it? But, I always remember that I've got the rest of my life to run, and if this month just happens to be slower, well, that's okay. Although, since I am kind of competitive, I chose to abandon my July challange before I could actually fail at it. It may just be semantics, but it makes me feel better! :-)
Kscout, I too enjoy your posts. Keep 'em coming!
As already stated above, last night I didn't run at all, just did an extra long session on the bike and elliptical, and my knee thanks me for it today. Yay! Tomorrow is the first race I ever ran, a 5K, which I run every year but I'm going to skip it this year because I don't want to exacerbate my knee. It's okay, I didn't really want to run it anyway. Although last year when I did it I ran my personal 5K PR at 26 minutes! Heh, there's NO WAY I would beat that this year.
4.13 miles more for this week :)
10.75 miles for me today. Good hour of training with the weights too. I've been investing 2 to 3 hours a day, five days a week toward training for this marathon in September. I have to say, at this point in my life, I am probably in the best physical shape I have ever been -- and looking to continue improving.
Just read "Younger Next Year" and "Younger Next Year for Women" - very motivating texts for those of us in our 40's and beyond. Recommended the first book to my dad - he is now exercising regularly and has set some fitness goals. He had a battle with lung cancer last year, but isn't allowing that as an excuse to "rust out". Husband also read the first book and has started back to the gym on a regular basis. I'm glad the important people in my life are seeing the value in taking better care of themselves.
Invested in a Garmin Forerunner 50 with the heart rate monitor and foot pod. Still waiting on the foot pod to ship, but have started using the watch and the hrm. I like it better than my old watch with the built in hrm - it was awkward pressing and holding buttons while running to get a heart rate.
Question for the experienced runners - last week, after my 16 miler, I soaked out in a tub of cold water for a half an hour - was too much of a weenie to add ice too. Next Friday, I am scheduled for an 18 miler, but will be finishing at a park too far from my home to go and soak in the tub. I was thinking about putting ice in trash bags and putting those on my legs to cool them and reduce inflammation after the run. Since husband will serve again as my mobile support crew, I can pack bags of ice in some coolers to have ready at the end of the run. Any thoughts? Thanks!!
