Mission: Run Around the World--MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!

We're on a mission to Run Around the World!

Please visit the previous incarnation of our thread here: http://caloriecount.about.com/forums/post/484 66.html.

Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!

Some info about us:

We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.

Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.

Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!

Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.

For detailed mileage, please visit our spreadsheet: http://www.editgrid.com/user/new_cc_worldrunn er/Runners_Log

so is this the one it's on now? I posted in the old one the link in the learn to run forum is the old thread :)

I'm off to go run now so I will ad later jsut wanted to check I was int he right place first.

Yes, aliceinonederland, this is the correct thread. Our weeks run from Wednesday to Tuesday, so feel free to check in with us either after every run or once a week (by Tuesday evening/Wednesday morning) so we can count your miles in the current week's totals.

Glad to have you join us--we're so close to reaching our goal!!
5.4 miles for yesterday.  Planning on a 20 mile run tomorrow -- will be another distance PR when finished.  Took Friday off from running last week due to an asthma attack at boot camp the night before.  Don't know what triggered it and breathing was okay by the next day - but decided to err on the side of caution.
Please add 4 miles for me from today.

Please add 4 soaking wet miles, complete with frequent lightening and near-constant thunder rumblings.  It had looked like the rain stopped, but I guess it was just a lull.  Guess I'll check a radar map next time.

Good morning, all!  Happy Friday!

I am pleased to report that the heat wave here has finally broken.  It's only upper 80s and that's soooooo much cooler!  I'm going to have a wonderful run tomorrow morning.  Assuming I get my ass out of bed, that is.  Heh.

Today is the final day of the BX100, which is a challenge at my gym where you're supposed to run, bike or elliptical (if that can be a verb) 100 miles within a 5 week time period (1 July - 8 August).  Finishers get a month's membership free.  While I've been lower on my running mileage, I've still kept up my fitness by using the bike and ellitpical a lot.  So I completed my 100 miles a couple of weeks ago.  I thought it was a really great challenge and made it so that everyone at the gym was working together.  Kind of like this thread!

The BX100 sounds like a great challenge, Jenka. The gym that I used to belong to back in Boston had a challenge like that several years ago, and though I saw quite a few people participate, I used to scoff at them all (I was much too full of myself back then in my days as a serious musclehead, thinking that cardio was for wusses who couldn't lift weights). Boy how things have changed!!

Another 5.3 miles today. While I'm still getting some good miles in during this mini-taper before my upcoming half, it's been tough trying to keep the intensity down the past few days. Hopefully my body will thank me for the reduced intensity which a kick-ass performance.

Please add 5.5 miles oxygen-rich miles for me today.

Right there with you wrm2105.  This was my last workout before Sunday's half ironman sufferfest.  And I'm in Des Moines for a wedding today--hard not to take advantage of all those extra O2 molecules flying about.

1.5 miles of intervals yesterday.

7.5 miles of hills today (and my legs are killing me, now).

GO JFK!  GO WRM!  Kick some serious tight butts out there, you guys!
20 miles for me today  - new distance PR - I also understand why people hit the wall at that distance!  From mile 18 to 19, I think was doing more of a shuffle than a run.  Was able to get back to getting the feet off the ground for the last mile - the fact it's the last mile is a great motivator! Husband kept me company (driving along in the pickup) for the last five miles at my request.  Looked like the country version of the Volvo commercial with the mom on the bike, I'm sure!  Did take an ice bath afterward, then stretched after legs warmed up again, then took a warm shower about an hour after stretching.  Legs are sore, but I'll be able to put my eight hours in at work tonight.

wrm and other marathoners:  My marathon is 09-20-08.  Should I try to get in any longer distance runs before then or should I try another 20 miler ot two?  I schedule my long distance run increases every two weeks, so it was two weeks ago that I ran 18.  This is my first marathon, so this level of training is very new to me.  Also, any advice on a taper schedule would be much appreciated.  Right now, I run about 5-5.5 miles on Mon., Tues, and Wed., and alternate Fridays with a 5-10 mile run or an increasing long distance run.  My main goal is to finish the race --  and to do so without doing permanent damage to my body parts. :-)  Thanks in advance for your help.
Please add 6 miles for me today.

kscout - Wow, I am so impressed by your 20 miler!! I'm tempted to train for a full marathon (I did my first half in January, and have my second one coming up at the end of September), but seem to be a bit intimidated by the distance. Your weight loss journey and running achievements are truly inspirational!!!

kscout: Kudos on your 20 miler.  Impressive especially in the summer heat.  My frist half is sheduled for the end of the month and I have a 20 miler scheduled in October and my first full in November.  I am learning from your experience.  Thanks for sharing.

wrm and jfk: What skinny_kitty said.  And remember to have fun in the midst of the pain.  I will be rooting for you and looking forward to the reports.

Please add 6 miles for me today.  I finally made it all the way up the huge hill that makes up the first 1/4 of this loop!!  I've been trying for over a year now and always had to walk the last yards.  But today I did it!!!Laughing

kscout - congrats on the 20 miles!! (I have no advice for you on your training, but I'm excited for you!)

10 mile long run this morning.  Low humidity made for a great run!

joyfulake: You are much bolder than me running in a thunder storm.

Hi everyone, 5.3 miles today. Very nice and easy run today. I think I'm ready for tomorrow's race.

Kscout-congrats on your 20-miler!!! Most first timers will do their 20-miler three weeks before the marathon, so you are definitely well ahead of schedule. I think that you should try to fit in another one in either two or three weeks. Given your marathon date of 9/20, you have just under six weeks left of training, which should include a three week taper.

Your second 20-miler should be the "final long-run" before your taper today. Since you do your long runs on Friday's, I suggest that your next 20-miler take place on August 29. This is how your mileage for Friday runs might look like for the remaining weeks:

August 15: 5-10; August 22: 12-15; August 29: 20; September 5: 10-12; September 12: 5-8: September 19 (day before marathon): Rest.

I would keep your workouts during the middle of the week the same, until the start of your taper, at which point, I would suggest the following:

Week of 8/31-9/6:    5/4/5
Week of 9/7-9/13:    4/3/4
Week of 9/14-9/20:  3/2/Rest

I think that setting up your remaining workouts like this will allow you the benefit that would come from an extra 20-miler. The "extra week" (with the 12-15 miler on August 22) will allow you to ease into the second 20-miler, which would allow you the flexiblity to cut back to 5-6 miles next Friday if you would like.

Good luck on your 1/2 ironman, jfk61! I'm looking forward to a race report.

I'm happy to hear that you were able to make it up that hill, joyfulake.

I love how lower humidity makes running so much more manageable, ww.

Thanks for the well-wishes, skinny_kitty. Although I'm not so sure about how tight my butt is... ; )

I've been on a bit of a work related hiatus. I'm back, and ready to contribute my little snippets of miles!

2.6 for me from yesterday.

wrm - thanks so much for the schedule.  I've got it down in my training log so I can get things lined out for these last six weeks. (I began keeping training logs when I began training for my half marathon last April.)  I appreciate your taking the time to help those of us new to this endeavor.  Wishing you the best on your race.

jfk - good luck with your 1/2 ironman!

joyfulake - congrats on conquering that hill!!  I think that's one of the best feelings in the world - being able to run uphill without stopping!

wili - thanks for your comments.  This is a learn as I go experience!!  As I look ahead to the marathon - I find myself thinking beyond that.  "If I can run a marathon, could I train for a 50 miler?"   Such thoughts would have been incomprehensible a year and a half ago - at that point, I was having a tough time envisioning myself as a runner.  So here I am, wondering if there's a part of me that has totally tipped over the edge - but I love finding out just how capable and resilient my body can be.  How fun to keep raising the bar - and how fortunate I am to have found a supportive community of runners with which to share my journey and rely upon for the nitty gritty info you can't find in the printed text.
2.6 again.

Are you accepting new runners?  If so, I ran 5.2 miles this week....

Hi, therealbetsy, we're definitely accepting new runners. Our weeks run from Wednesday to Tuesday, so we welcome you to report miles to us after every run or once a week. If you want your mileage to count for a particular week, please make sure to submit them to the thread by Wednesday morning.

BTW, I read your post about completing your first 5K--congratulations. The first 5K is definitely the toughest.
