We're on a mission to Run Around the World!

Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!

Some info about us:

We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.

Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.

Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!

Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.

3.1 miles for yesterday.  Taper called for three miles, but it somehow seemed more fitting to go the 5K distance.  Ran an easy first mile, then ran a 10 minute second mile (that's pushing it for me!), then finished out the rest at an 11:00 minute/mile pace.  Goal after marathon is to work on speed.

wrm - I have an opportunity to run a 5K this weekend.  Is this a good idea with the marathon a week away?

kscout: If I was faced with a similar situation, I would avoid running a 5K the weekend before a marathon, but only because I prefer a two week window for any shorter races before a marathon and because I know that I would want to race the 5K "all out" (6:15-6:30 pace). But before you follow this advice, you should probably consider how "fast" you want to run the 5K. If your goal is to set a PR or run an agressive pace, I would advise against it. However, if you want to include the mileage from the 5K to whatever you planned to run that weekend (if I recall correctly, I suggested that you run anywhere from 5 to 8 miles for your long run), and if you're confident that you can resist the temptation to go all out, then go ahead and participate in the 5K.

kscout: Personally have cut out all races leading up to marathon for reasons WRM mentions above, although curious how fast I could do a 5K now as have not run one since June.  I just cancelled 9/21 5 mile race that is part of hometown festival as it does not fit into the marathon plan, so instead of racing 5 miles for hometown glory I will be out on a 17 mile slow and easy run I think.

kscout:  Eh, I've not been running so long that I really have really different speeds...if I'm training for a 5K, I tend to push everything;  if I'm training for longer distances, I tend to slow down for all of them--so I'd just count it as training miles.  If it were me, I'd do it.  I'm never gonna break any records--I just race because it's fun, and the more fun the better!

Wow, thanks for all the input!  My son's cross country team is hosting the race as part of a community festival and a team fundraiser, so honestly, I'd probably be out there pushing myself for a faster time, looking for that new PR.  Have to show the young'uns that the old folks can still hit the pavement running!! And I'd be doing that after coming off an eight hour shift the night before (6:00 pm to 2:30 am, don't get home and to bed until 4 am), so I'd be running on little sleep to boot. 

I'll be better off to stay home and sleep - I'll have done an eight mile run on Friday, my last long run.  I've just come to love running so much, it's difficult sometimes to take that step back and think about the long term.  I did turn down participating in an adventure race on Sunday this weekend due to the marathon.  My son may be running in that one as part of a team competition; however, his coach has to clear his participation, as that would mean three of the high school's varsity runners would be on different adventure race teams.  Have to watch the potential for injury during the season!

This is my son's first year running cross country, but his martial arts training has served him well. - he's a black belt in tae kwon do.  He has the mental endurance needed to train hard - and he is able to listen and follow through on his coaches' instructions.  It's great being able to talk with my son about running and celebrating one another's accomplisments - and now there's competition for getting to the latest issue of Runner's World and Running Times in the household! 

Thanks again - I really value your advice.  I've learned so much since finding this thread last March.  Hoping the thread will continue on in some fashion once we have made it around the world.

2.8 miles today off the bike.

It took 25 mins so looks like the other day when I was confused was likely 25 not 22 and since it was 4.5k not 5k, my 5k time going on the lower 23minute time I did not off the bike is probably closer to 26mins.

Kscout, just based on the fact that you'll be tired from working the night shift, and you know yourself well enough to realize you'll probably push yourself too hard, I'd say skip the 5K.  There'll always be another one!  Good luck on the marathon, by the way!

As usual, I ran out of time and couldn't do my long run yesterday as planned (this happens to me all the time!) so instead I did 4.5 miles of intervals.
