Mission: Run Around the World--MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!
We're on a mission to Run Around the World!
Please visit the previous incarnation of our thread here: http://caloriecount.about.com/forums/post/484 66.html.
Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!
Some info about us:
We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.
Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.
Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!
Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.
For detailed mileage, please visit our spreadsheet: http://www.editgrid.com/user/new_cc_worldrunn er/Runners_Log

9 miles on friday
Thanks for thinking of me Jenka!
So, I DID IT!!! I ran the Sydney half marathon yesterday, and it couldn't have been a more perfect dy to run it... Not too cold, not too hot (well, maybe a little warm for some, but not for me!). It was an absolutely fantastic experience and I can't wait to do it again next year. I enjoyed running this MUCH better than the city to surf run I did back in August, probably because I didn't have to contend with walkers so it was just so much easier to set my track and run it, only having to go around some slower runners (although I felt like mostly people were going around me!). My official time will be around 2:04 (finihsed in 2:09 on the clock, but need to wait for my timining chip time to be posted because I know it took me about 5 or so minutes to cross the start line.
It was an absolutely beautiful run too, started over the harbour bridge, then past darling harbour ( a really pretty harbour in downtown Sydney), and then out towards the western suburbs and back through the rocks (a Historical area with lots of pubs in downtown Sydney), and finally to Circular Quay ending at the Opera house. Let me tell you, the sight of the Opera house as I finished was a spectaular was to finish a race. I felt quite strong through most of the race, started out slow and then started picking up the pace after abuot 6k in. I almost pushed myself too much at the end though because I thought I could run the last 5 K faster than I really had left in me, so with about 2K's left I was struggling a bit because I tried to push too early. But, I think I did them on pure adrenaline because I knew I was SO CLOSE!
Anyway, a friend on mine from Melbourne called me last night to see how it went and wants to try to do the half marathon down the great ocean road next year in Melbourne, so I am thinking I might actually fly down there to do it with her. Funny, now I am actually thinking of FLYING to places to race.... what has happened to me?
I also know now that in a few more years when my daughter is a little older I will definitely do a marathon, just can't get the training runs in right now with working full time and being a full time mom.
Cheers all, and happy running!
Congrats on your half marathon, manta515--great time!
22 miles for me this morning--the taper starts today.
10.8 miles for me today. A little slow--eh, whaddaya expect with the 5K yesterday.
8 miles today
Friday-5.0
Saturday-4.5
Monday-5.5
Congrats manta515! Sounds like a beautiful half!
Thanks so much for the encouraging congrats for my HIM. It was a huge moment for me, especially when you consider where I'm coming from (to be posted in the Fitness forum with a race report! As soon as I have time, that is!)
manta: I'm running a half marathon in two weeks and I REALLY want YOUR time!! Congratulations!!
jenka: You posted a how-to-tempo run ages ago and I thought I'd tagged it but now can't find it. What was that link again?
jfk: Ya. Uh-hunh. We rock. We Ironmen now (or should that read, Ironpeople?)
Hi, All! My 5K went fine, I didn't get a very good time but I really did run my ass off. My official time was 27:50 but (and I hate it when people make excuses, but) I did start out at the very back of about 400 total runners, so I'm sure the actual time was skewed. I'm slightly pissed off about that, especially since I'm positive I was running an 8 minute mile for the first mile. But, whatever! I'll just try to squeeze up closer to the front for my 10K this weekend! I just hate doing that, I don't like people all that much and prefer to run without impediment. I'm sure a lot of people feel that way, too.
3 miles on Friday and then 6 on Saturday (5K plus 3 mile recovery run afterwards) for a total of 9 more miles.
Skinny_kitty: the tempo run is really easy. You start out doing 5-8 minutes at your slow pace. Then at 5-minute intervals increase your pace slightly. About 40-50 minutes into the run (or so) you should be at top racing pace. You should only be able to hold the top pace for a 2-3 minutes, then go back down to your slow pace for about 10 minutes. Usually I gradually go back down to my slow pace with a 5 minute interval at a medium pace, then 10 minutes at my slow pace.
Very odd sighting yesterday--we were driving home yesterday from my sister's and I saw a red/maroon color car in front of me and the license plate said, "JENKA". I took another glance at the plate and saw that the plates were from Georgia. I thought, "Hmm--could it be???"
Made me wonder...
wrm- I have to admit I didn't stick to my pace like I should have. Things felt so good at the beginning, I just went with it and shaved 9:40 off my half marathon PR. I am ecstatic about that!
Things were still going real well until mile 16 - then wham - my hips locked up. This is where the painful part comes in. I alternated fast walking and slow running (I call it the marathon shuffle), literally willing myself forward by mile 20. Somwhere between mile 20 and 24, the 4:45 pace group passed me, then the 5:00 group - and I thought about trying to maintain a pace with them - but just couldn't. I was still so happy about the halfway point time and just thrilled to still be moving forward, that my goal of sub-5:00 not happening didn't put me in any despair.
At mile 24, the clock read 5:03 and change - and something within me realized I could finish in sub-5:30:00. I don't know where I got the energy; I don't know how I got my body moving into a full run again - just sheer willpower and determination - kept repeating that mantra of "Pain is weakness leaving the body" - passed up the last two hydration stations because I knew if I stopped, I would STOP -- and ran across the finish line in 5:26:11. *I was 1480/1796 and 42/59 in my age group.
It was an incredible experience from beginning to end -- and I thank all of you who helped me get to that race through your training advice and encouragement.
If you have not run the United States Air Force Marathon - it is one worth running. It was very well organized and all hydration stations were well stocked. There were plenty of support personnel to assist runners in distress (I saw at least four ambulances coming to cart runners off - and several medical tents were set up throughout the course.). The people of the city of Fairborn were out cheering us on as we ran through the main part of town. At the beginning of the race, there were flyovers by at least five different aircraft, including the F-22 Raptor. The course has some hills, but nothing extreme - and part of the course includes running down the same runway on which the F-16s take off and land.
My muscles still hurt, my arm is still chafed from my tank top, and I am still a little red from the sun -- but I would do it all again - and plan to next year. My next question - how long should I rest before I resume running again?
Congratulations--you are officially a marathoner!! Well done!
What you described about your pace through the first half of the race is something I know all too well. It's very normal to find out on race day that your race pace is faster than your training pace; in my first 50K last fall, I felt so good in the first 20 miles of the race that I was averaging a sub 8 pace. Keep in mind that I averaged an 8:21 pace in my first 20 mile run several weeks earlier and that my average pace in the HM at that point was 8:33. After a couple of miles where I started to gradually slow down (8:15 and 8:29), I crashed HARD with my remaining miles ranging from 11 to 17 minutes. So believe me, I know how it feels.
In terms of recovery and returning to running, it's all about listening to your body. Please read the following link from Hal Hidgon:

Again, congratulations and great job!!
25 miles for the past week
thanks all for the congrats, and thanks skinny_kitty, good luck with your half, you may surprise yourself, I did. My official time was 2:05:37, I am pretty damn happy with that considering less than a year ago, I couldn't even run a mile without stopping!
well done kscout! You totally inspire me, and when I have the time, I will definitely be training for my first marathon.... either that or it is time to get a jogging stroller and train with that. I plan on a few more half's first, I just loved my last one so much, then I will see where I am at.
I was quite sore all day yesterday, feeling much better today. Time to start looking for my next event! Might try to improve my 5K or 10K time next.
skinny_kitty - good luck with your upcoming half. - I know you'll do well!
wrm - thanks for the link. I've copied the info into word so I can download it onto my flash drive.
Kscout: CONGRATULATIONS! I can't tell you how impressed I am! I've never run a full marathon, so I think your accomplishment is fabulous!
Manta: good job on your half! I bet seeing that opera house at the end was incredible!
Wrm: NO WAY?! That's craziness! It's not me, that's for sure. But now I'm going to be looking at the license plates of every maroon car I see!
Good morning, everyone--7.1 miles today.
manta: well done! I agree with jenka on the scenery. I love the bit about considering flying to a destination for a race of all things. I am headed out of town for thanksgiving this year and the first thing I did was look for a Thanksgiving 5k run -- I am becoming one of those people
kscout: Inspirational run. I have followed and appreciated your effort all along the way. Keep up the good work. I hope that my race goes as well as yours.
skinny_kitty: You and jfk have about got me convinced I need to ask Santa for a bike this year. Good job on the tri and good luck with the half.
Please add 21 miles for me for this week's OZ run.
since 9/13 I have run the following at ~ 9:00 - 9:20 min mile
9/13 - 3.5
9/14 - 2.0
9/15 - 3.5
9/16 - 2.5
9/17 - 3.1
9/19 - 3.5
9/20 - 2.0
9/22 - 3.5
9/23 - 2.5
Holy cow! WTG kscout!! Over 5 hours of straight running! Gee, and I remember us last year trying to make it through 10k without getting sick...Congratulations!
Thanks so much jenka. I'm going to give it a try this week.
wiliwigi: WARNING: Triathlons are extremely addictive and horribly good for your health...(I'm sure Santa will be more than happy to oblige, if you ask nicely!)
And yes, manta, I know what you mean about coming so far in such a short period of time. Kudos to us!
more addicting than running alone skinny_kitty?
I have been thinking I may train for one next year, I already have a bike adn there is plenty of water in Sydney, so there is nothing really holding me back. I am actually supposed to be doing a cycling event with my hubby and 2.5 year old this month, 42km over the Harbour bridge and out to Sydney Olympic Park. We have a trailer for my daughter, so my hubby will pull her along as he is the avid cyclist in the family.
