Mission: Run Around the World
Check out our new mini-website for more fun information! Please post all your discussions here - there is nowhere to post on that site, but there are links to this and the Learn to Run Thread.
www.worldrunnersclub.com
Every day that you run, whether it's 1 mile on the treadmill or the Boston Marathon, report in via a PM or a post (but not both!!!!). If you count it as a run, so do we, but try not to include straight walking warmups/cooldowns (jogging counts, though).
You may send your miles (or kilometers) in daily or weekly. Updates will be done weekly as of Tuesday 11:59 PM. Miles will be added up from Wednesday through Tuesday for our weekly totals.
YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE MILES AT ANY TIME! Even if you only contribute one mile, once, we'll still welcome it, so don't be shy! As long as it's run during the week we are working on, it counts.
Not a runner yet, but want to be? Check out the Learn to Run thread and start now!
Please see Post 1 for more information and the itinerary.
We will start the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean.
Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.
Let's see how fast we can do this!!! Please post here if you want to join and contribute your mileage! We welcome any help we can get!
Our next challenge: - Getting from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, through Peru and to Ecuador, then to Colombia
Here is our Actual Progress
Countries we've run: Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador

But today I won't be able to eat before the run because of scheduling conflicts. So I was going to eat the sandwich about two hours ahead of time and then maybe have a protein shake or bar right after the run. Does that sound good? Or would you skip the sandwich 2 hours ahead of the run and just have the bar/shake about 45 minutes before the run?
I've never tried any protein bars or shakes. Any suggestions?
Hey minie13,
I believe it depends on the length of your run and its intensity. The guidance I've been given sort of goes like this:
The longer and more intense it is, the more low GI carbs you need before, and the more protein you need after (also with some higher GI carbs). The closer to the run, the more liquid the carbs should be. For shakes afterward, I use hi-protein slim-fast, and some high-GI carb gel that I get at my local bike shop. Beforehand, I just use gatorade.
Missed a couple of weeks. Posting for this week 6.6 mi.
5.5 of those miles were at a typical pace (8:30/miles), while the remaining 5 miles were part of a "lactate threshold" workout, and therefore at a faster pace (aiming for 7:24-7:30 per mile, averaged 7:19/mile). I think that I'm ready to move on to more specialized workouts aimed at improving my race performance, but we'll see how my body reacts to the different types of workouts.
Another 6.3 miles today.
Hey wrm2105, what a coincidence--I did a lactate threshold workout on Sunday. Really it was more a do-it-yourself heart rate vs. speed plot that I'm comparing monthly to my "real" test at the Center for Sport Medicine. My problem with it is the heart rate--I don't really trust the treadmill grips, and I have a lot of problems keeping a chest strap in place. What do you do to measure heart rate?
I had 39.25 miles last week
To answer your question about the lactate threshold workout, jfk61, to be honest, I don't use anything to measure heart rate. I have been reading Advanced Marathoning by Daniel Pfitzinger and Scott Douglas, who suggest basing your LT workouts on your 15K race pace (for slower runners, like me) or half-marathon pace (for faster runners). I have never raced a 15K, so I used the McMillan Running Calculator (http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/mcmillanrunnin gcalculator.htm)to predict my 15K pace based on a recent performance in an 8K race. Once I entered in that information, I could see what my predicted pace should be in the 15K, as well as what my training paces should be for different types of workouts (endurance, stamina, speed, or sprint).
oh and i signed up for the Disneyland Half Marathon again!!!
Well, I think I am going to do the ING half marathon here in Atlanta on 29 March. I had wanted to do the Sarasota half on 2 March, but I haven't gotten my act together to train for it due to some nagging overuse injuries. So we'll see!
In an effort to make Zarelha's job easier when she comes back, I've gone ahead and added up my mileage, up to the week ending Tuesday, 5 February. From now on I will add my weekly mileage to the total, and that way she doesn't have to worry about adding me up.
My total mileage up through week ending 5 Feb: 685.30.

That's a great idea jenka, I've been keeping a running log in my journal since the end of December just in case anything got lost, I could help her out.
Another 6.3 miles today, thanks!
Congrats on the PR energygirl --- was it for time or distance?
I also have my own logs, and being an ubernerd, it is all in a computer database that can be sliced and diced however I like it, so zarelha, when you return, just ask me for the latest. Here's what it is today, and you can see the impact of joining this group on 1/1/08 pretty clearly :-)
