Mission: Run Around the World

Quote  |  Reply
OK, CC-ers!  Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is ... To help the newly-created CC World Runners Club run around the world!

Check out our new mini-website for more fun information! Please post all your discussions here - there is nowhere to post on that site, but there are links to this and the Learn to Run Thread.

www.worldrunnersclub.com

Every day that you run, whether it's 1 mile on the treadmill or the Boston Marathon, report in via a PM or a post (but not both!!!!).  If you count it as a run, so do we, but try not to include straight walking warmups/cooldowns (jogging counts, though).

You may send your miles (or kilometers) in daily or weekly.  Updates will be done weekly as of Tuesday 11:59 PM.  Miles will be added up from Wednesday through Tuesday for our weekly totals.

YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE MILES AT ANY TIME!  Even if you only contribute one mile, once, we'll still welcome it, so don't be shy!  As long as it's run during the week we are working on, it counts.

Not a runner yet, but want to be?  Check out the Learn to Run thread and start now!

Please see Post 1 for more information and the itinerary.

We will start the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina.  We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean.

Start date of the run:  August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.

Let's see how fast we can do this!!!  Please post here if you want to join and contribute your mileage!  We welcome any help we can get!

Our next challenge:  - Getting from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, through Peru and to Ecuador, then to Colombia

Here is our Actual Progress

Countries we've run: Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador

Have not been good about posting lately.  I had 10 miles on Sat Feb 2, and 7 miles on Sat Feb 9.  getting ready for my full marathon this weekend in Jacksonville, FL.
wrm2105- you are a maniac!  (In a good way).  Do you run everyday?  You run so far and it seems like its everyday.  How do you avoid overtraining and stress injuries.  You must be in fanstastic shape.  Your resting heart rate must be like 45.

Good for you - I'm jealous.  I wish that I could distance run everyday, but my right knee gets sore if I overdo it and run long distances (over about 7 miles) more than 2 times a week.

2/6 - 2/12: 7.5 miles

I had a great experience running on saturday with my 7 y/o daughter.  She has been watching me and her mommy begin training and wants in on the fun.  We are encouraging her toward participating in a childrens marathon, the kids run 1 mile (or exercise for an hour) per day for the 26 days leading up to the event and then they run the last mile in a race.  Kind of cool.  This leads me to my question: Has anyone uncovered any good resources for helping kids train?  I am trying to add to my knowledge base.

Hello! Please add 2 miles for me today.

I hope Zarelha is okay. I like the idea of a spreadsheet that more than one person can update.
Hi minie13- thanks for the kind words. I think I'm in pretty good physical condition--definitely the best cardiovascular shape in my life. I was a lot more muscular 10 years ago, when I focused solely on weight training and avoided the treadmill. But even that got boring, and I stopped working out as intensely as I used to, with undesirable results. My profile pics will show you how far I have come since I have started running. The pic of me at my heaviest was right before I started getting on the treadmill, compared to my most recent pics, which is a true representation of me right now.

I currently run 5 days a week, usually SU/TU/W/TH/SA, although my days sometimes change. For example, I shifted my scheduled Sunday run to yesterday because of the windchills in Chicago that day. My current program will be calling for some workouts on days that have tended to be "off" days in the past (while resting on days that had formerly been workout days), but I think you get the idea. This is the beginning of my third year of running, and only now have I increased my frequency to 5 days a week. In 2006, I stuck to 3 days/week, particularly after I was sidelined for several weeks by a minor groin pull caused by "newbie overexertion". Last year I increased my training frequency to 4 days/week when I started "marathon training" (I followed the training plan although I wasn't planning to race a marathon). My slow progression from 3 days/week to my current five days/week has definitely played a role in preventing injuries (at least I think so) since my groin pull in 2006.

I don't know how long you have been running, but it looks like you already pull in some impressive distances on a regular basis. As long as you are patient and don't push yourself too much, you should be able to run distances of greater than seven miles on a more frequent basis, if that's what you really want. Only in recent months have I gotten to this point, and only because I will be training for 4 races this year of marathon distance or longer.
I ran one mile last night. I am trying to come back. I didn't run it all at once, I did the "learn to run" method, but I figured that my running time was equal to one mile (maybe a bit more). I'm not sure if that counts or not, but at least you know I'm back on the right track.

I'll try to post once a week from now on. I really want to get back to this. Thank you for your patience with me and your understanding of my situation. Just FYI we still haven't heard anything about our missing son.

Thanks for keeping me included! It's nice to be able to come back!

~Shannon
Jfk61, well, Zarelha has already put together a pretty comprehensive Excel spreadsheet. I wonder if we could steal it? It's got permissions set to no editing, but if we could use it as an open source template it would avoid the necessity of building a new one from scratch. Personally, I would think that having everyone update their own is a bad idea, but I do advocate having a smaller team do the updating, say two to four people. If you would like to explore the possibilities, I think we all would be grateful. Every day that goes by creates more work, and at some point, even if (when!) Zarelha does come back, if we have a system in place that makes her job easier, so much the better. It seems clear that having one person do all the work is not a good idea even when she does return.

29.33 Miles for me this week please.

Congrats Shannon!!!!! Welcome back! Laughing One thing at a time, one step at a time, one stride at a time, one mile at a time.

Hi everyone--6 miles today.
41 miles for this week.
ARGHHHH!  I'm so bummed out.  I really was hoping to run today, but my knee is killing me.  I was going to try to just run anyway, but I've finally convinced myself to just stay off it so it can heal.  I'm really upset.  I didn't run yesterday either : (  I try to run every other day.  I guess maybe I'm overdoing it and need to pull back a little.  Yesterday I walked on the treamill which aggravated the knee even more I think, so today I'm doing nothing at all

EDIT: Do you think a knee brace would help?  The pain is alwaysin the same knee when I get it.
Had a fabulous 10 mile run today.....found my groove early on and the entire thing just flew by.

My only problem is now I have to work late, to make up for the extra long lunch I took to do the run. Oh well - I feel great!!!

Please add 6.5 miles for me today.

minie13:  Do you think it might be chondromalacia?  I had that last year, and can attest to the efficacy of the Cho-Pat brace.

Good morning folks! Today marks the start of a new World Runners Week, so tally up your miles from the past Wed-through-Tuesday and post them!

Wiliwigi has copied and updated Zarelha's original Excel spreadsheet with excellent results. Obviously, we want Zarelha to come back as our intrepid leader, but when she does, it seems to me that she could use some help. And the best gift we can give her is to keep the tallies current so that when she does return, she will have no catching up to do! So are there any volunteers willing to be one of a small team who will split the responsibility of updating between them? I volunteer to be one of them, now we just need 1-3 other people as well.

Week of 6-12 February: 30.7 miles

Total: 716 miles

Minie13, do a quick Google search on "runner's knee," it's pretty common and there are some solutions you can implement (should it prove to be runner's knee that you are suffering from).  Also: what kinds of surfaces are you running on?  Do you only run outside?  If so, might be a good idea to switch up every other run to a treadmill, which will absorb the shock better.  My knee aches if I run on pavement twice in a row.
Hi--count me in. I'd love to help.

BTW, for week of February 6-12: 48 miles

Total: 663.8

Minie13: Knees are serious.  Even if it is only tendonitis you need to rest and let it recover.  If you are having pain all the time it is worthwhile to have it checked.  It is better to loose a few days of conditioning and add years of running rather than the other way around.

.75 miles for me yesterday. I gotta start training again! Half marathon's fast approaching... well not fast, but still approaching.
Morning! Please add 3 miles for me today.

All right, everyone. I asked Melkor about moving the thread, and here is what he had to say:

"Well, backstage they've told me that if I edit the original post, no-one but a mod can edit it thereafter, so that's probably not an option. PandaJenn made a suggestion though:

They might consider creating an RATW user ID, so that any one of the 4 or 5 people who are going to help can log into the OP and make changes. It would prevent the same issue from happening again, if for example Jenka becomes the new OP and then in a few months life gets in the way of her posting for a while.

I'd suggest if they do start over, to link the original thread at the top of the new thread and lock the original one. And they should also PM zarelha the ID access if they create a RATW ID, just so she doesn't feel too kicked to the curb.

Given the limitations of the current mod tools, Panda's suggestion is probably the best we can hope for - Team might have another solution when they check in later today, but that's not something I'd stake a lot of hope on given the current technical setup."

For the record, I am in favor of creating a new RATW user profile. The Update Team would have the password and any one of them could then update the original post. As Pandajenn states above, if one person starts a new thread, life could get in their way as well, and then we'd be right back where we started. Zarelha would be team leader when she comes back, or Queen, or however we want to honor her hard work and inspiration.
