So I've just discovered the wonder that is steamed vegetable dumplings. I crave them now. How about you guys?

I like them more than the fried minced pork dumplings.

Steamed veggie dumplings are love!! also they are not super bad for you, just watch out for that pot sticker sauce, it's just sou sauce loaded with sugar! I was a server at an upscale Thai restaurant for a little over a year and I'd talk the cook into making me veggie steamed dumplings all the time! Lol I also no how the sauces and things are made, and most of the stuff at Thai/ Chinese places are bad for you so I stay away now lol

I just did a thread on pot stickers. Ive not had the veg ones but am all for saving some calories and while the fried ones (you know, not deep fried but pan fried) are pretty great - just plain old boiled are awesome.  Boilded dumplings (ie pot stickers) my new treat thats pretty innocent.

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM M. <3

Sorry, that's all I had to say. lol.

That's why I don't eat it :) I like them plain or just with some regular soy sauce or a drizzle of Hot Chili Sesame Oil :)

I kind of want to try making these... anyone have a recipe?

I, too, would be interested in a good recipe, though it appears that Alton Brown has a rather good looking one on foodnetwork.com

I heart alton :)  Sometimes his recipes are a bit too complex for me though, lol.  Today i saw him cook something with hot bricks.  I will take a look though.

Where do you get these/how do you make them? They aren't on the menue at my local chinese place. : ( But whenever I see my family eating dumplings I want them, but I'm a vegetarian.

So, i found this recipe! going to try it tonite! Laughing Ingredients:
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup finely chopped Napa cabbage (about 1/2 of a small cabbage head), parboiled
  • 1 cup tofu (2 cakes), chopped
  • ¼ cup bean sprouts, blanched and chopped
  • 4 oz mung bean or sweet potato noodles (aka Chinese vermicelli), soaked and chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 3 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1 package circular mandoo wrappers (or Japanese gyoza or Chinese wonton wrappers)
Preparation:
  • In a large mixing bowl, gently combine egg, onion, cabbage, bean sprouts, tofu, and noodles.

  • In a separate bowl, combine garlic, sesame oil, soy sauce, salt, and pepper.

  • Pour seasoning mixture over tofu and vegetables and mix with hands to combine.

  • Place about 1 tablespoon of filling in the center of dumpling wrapper.

  • Dip your finger in water and wet the outside edge of the top half of the wrapper.

  • Fold the wrapper up to close and then crimp the edges.

  • Repeat until the filling is gone.

  • Then steam, boil, fry, or sauté the dumplings as you wish.
    (Serves 6)

    * If you have extra dumpling wrappers, you can just cut them into slices and use them to make noodle soup.

** If you want to prepare a lot of dumplings in advance, steam the dumplings, wait for them to cool, and then freeze them. You can then use them anytime straight from the freezer without defrosting, whether you want to fry, sauté, steam, or use them in soup.

At our restaurant, they put them on the menu and they always ask if you want them steamed or fried. There's really nothing but cabbage, carrots and maybe some bamboo shoots in these that I get, but boy do they fill me up quick... 7 of them is a meal, I can't believe they have it down as an appetizer! he he

So you can just buy pre-prepared dumpling wrappers instead of making a dough? This may make this experiment work, lol.

Just my two cents but if you're going to use that recipe, I suggest you press the Napa cabbage to get the water out.  There's so much liquid in the cabbage that it'll turn your pot stickers to mush.  My family makes pot stickers from scratch frequently and we've actually switched to using cabbage because we think it's too much work to press the Napa.  Taste-wise, cabbage is a great substitute.

Alton's pot stickers were on tv last night!  They look simple enough, I am going to try a tofu filling tonight I think.  I wonder if you can get whole wheat wonton wrappers?  Am I asking too much here?  lol
