mmmmmmm...... something salty.
Maybe someone has an idea for me. I don't really have a sweet tooth so woking next to Krispy Kreme doesn't bother me. What does kill my diet is salty foods. I can ignore the plate of brownies all day but put a bag of chips or beef jerky out there and I'm a plundering viking. Since I have no will power I have asked my wife to not buy these foods for the house. She continues, so assume this is an unreasonable request.
Does anyone else have this problem? Has anyone else beat it? If so what did you do? Is there a better (healthier) alternative. Oh, and for the love of all things holy, I can't eat another carrott or celery stick.
Thanks for any advice you might have.

I find that when I'm craving salt, it's my body's code for "I want protein". A slice or two of deli turkey (or ham or roast beef) or a slice of cheese helps me deal with the craving in a fairly healthy way. Or a slice of whole grain toast with cream cheese. Or 1/2 cup of cottage cheese with tomato and herbs. I might even go all out and scramble an egg or two.
And if that doesn't help, I microwave one of those 100 calorie popcorn bags. They deal with any "I want salty carbs" cravings.
I deal with it by giving in, unfortunately. I've got low blood pressure so I just shrug and eat the darned chips. I have no idea but I sympathize, I'd rather eat a big super salty soft pretzel than a donut any day.
I suppose that a cup of hard pretzels only has 100 calories and popcorn is decent, there are definitely way to eat salty foods but is it that you want to cut sodium down in your diet?
What about veggie chips? Or a flavorful dip that you could put those carrots or celery sticks into (maybe use the dip flavor of a chip you like the most haha).
Pretzels are better for you than chips and still offer crunchy salty goodness. Whole wheat pita chips would be another fiber-ous option. Check out Whole Foods sometime, youll see a lot you might never have imagined..
If I had the will power to have a single serving of chips each day then I would be alright. The real problem is when I want a small snack I end up eating half a bag. (1000 calories.)
Well pickles help curb it for me a bit. I especially like the Clausen because they're super crunchy too and at 5 calories each you'll be sick to your stomach before you can eat enough to spoil your diet.
i am addicted to pirates booty and smart puffs. they're not good for you but it's like 130 calories a bag, but the good thing about them is they're not fried, they're baked or air puffed. a lot of popular chips come in baked varieties. sun chips are also multigrain... i mean, none of these is like, health foods, but if you crave something bad then these are the lesser evils.
Another good salty snack is roasted almonds which are like 170 calories for 28 almonds. Those are also really filling. the bad thing is they're really easy to eat too many of because they're calorie dense and completely addicting. pour them into a shot glass and eat only that many.
I also like thin wafer crackers like wasa crackers with laughing cow cheese or reduced fat cream cheese. They are really bland tasting so they go well with everything... salsa, hummus, peanut butter, tapanade, deli meat
this isn't for everyone, but i looove smoked fish. just a little is really good for you, got those good fats and protein. and its soo flavorful. I love a slice of whole wheat bread with thinly spread cream cheese and smoked salmon, trout, mackerel, whitefish, even sardines, and maybe some tomato. so good. (if you're in the mood). that's a healthy, snack that is filling. its better than half a bag of chips, at any rate. have a mint after :)
This might not help you, but if you stop eating so much salt/many salty products, you'll really lose the taste for it. Really you should be trying to eat salt in moderation anyway, diet or no diet. Low-cal and sort of healthy things I can think of which might satisfy your salty cravings are olives, stir-fried vegetables with soy sauce, savoury hot drinks made with stock cubes etc., pickled onions and pre-portioned (would your wife let you divide up her bags of chips? Lol) salted nuts, crisps, popcorn etc. I'm the same with anything sweet and find it a lot easier to stop having just a few more raisins if the bag is 20g rather than 200g!
Yeah, try replacing the salty stuff with protein. Like I used to keep sandwich ham in my fridge for whenever I got "meat cravings" (sounds so wrong). It was very tasty but only about 8 cals per piece.

... Do they have small bags of pirates booty and smart puffs? Where do I find them!?
Otherwise, these are 130-145 calories per SERVING... and there are approx. 4 servings per bag. They are freakin' delicious though!!! :) I
I'm a peanut-eating-fiend, so I bought a box of 1-oz packs.... that way I can know exactly how much I'm having at a time. Small serves are your friend. Ditto for potato chips etc. Otherwise I get a small bowl, serve out ONE serving and seal up the packet and put it away in the cupboard again.
