Moderate or Light Activity?

Quote  |  Reply

I work out everyday for about an hour and a half give or take a few minutes. I also take a bike ride around my town almost ever night and my usual route involves hills of low incline and the occasional hill with a somewhat steep incline.

At home I'm pretty sedentary, but I will get up about every 45 minutes to an hour and walk around the house a bit. I also make dinner every night and it usually takes about an hour to do so and I'm never off my feet during this time.

I have a job working for my grandfather where I go to his house once a week and clean the house. I'm usually there for about 3-4 hours and the work isn't vigorous but it does keep me on my feet.

Would you consider my activity level moderate or light?

I would say light.

Then again, I set mine at sedentary and I log all my exercise. It may be a pain, but I feel like I have a more accurate count this way.

You could set yours at sedentary, add in your workouts (and your bike ride) and that would give you a pretty good estimate.

I don't know the CORRECT answer, forgive me :)

Hey melody anne - I've had the same problem, since I'm also in between the two as you are. I wouldn't say sedentary, since you burn more while resting  because you generally move more than a sedentary person, which would mean that your daily cal intake would be too low to have the correct deficit (assuming you're trying to loose weight) to have a healthy weight loss plan. I tried my way with both light and moderate activity for a few weeks each until I found which one gave me the one pound a week result - and for me it's moderate... hope this helps.... good luck

are you going to log your exercise separately? I think in terms of exercise you are doing a very EXCELLENT job. Congratulations! I would list you as moderate if you were not going to list exercise separately. Even if you did add the exercise as you do it, I would still think you are moderately active with cleaning, the gentle bike ride and preparing food.

I've decided to set my activity to sedentary because then I at least know how much a burn at a minimum so I know the proper amount of calories I should eat everyday. I going to document my daily activity more closely so then if I spend more time on my feet than sitting down I might change my activity to light or moderate depending on the ratio of of active hours to none active hours (sleep not included).

I would log it as light. You are not sedentary.  A sedentary person is someone who works a desk job, comes home and sits in front of the computer/tv/desk/reads, and doesn't work out.

Your activity level sounds similar to mine when I'm trying to lose weight, and I have mine set at light activity and I don't log my workouts. I had it set at sedentary for a while and I ended up eating way under on calories and slowed my  metabolism way down.
