MOLLY'S DIET RANTS! (ranting, raving, motivating & more)
RANTING BURNS CALORIES!
This is an open, ongoing, support-encourage-motivational-RANTING thread. Feel free to skip to the end, or spend days reading through all of this ...
* * *
I have decided that "Diet" is a 4-letter word.
I find myself muttering and uttering the word around my house these days with loathing and vehemence previously reserved only for comments directed toward liberal politicians. In fact, I seem to be talking to myself a lot more these days .... sort of a running, sarcastic commentary on all the foods I can't eat, or on various other related topics. I wonder if there is a link between calorie-deprivation and Tourettes Syndrome? Grrrrrrrrr.....
I am now on Day 8 of the dreaded D-word. This is already the longest period of time that I have ever successfully remained on a diet. And I seem to be growing grouchier and feistier each day..... at least when I am alone and no one is around to hear my running rants. (My wonderful DH has heard some of my more memorable rants on the subject of broccolli and reports that I am hysterically funny when I am hungry!) I am counting carbs. I am counting calories. I am counting fat grams. Sheesh ... now my math anxiety is about to kick-in!
Mini Rant #1 .... what masochist decided that the serving size of cereal was anything less than 2 cups? Have you ever measured out 2/3 a cup of cereal? Or even a full cup? And placed it in a bowl? Those few little flakes and pieces just sit forlornly at the bottom of the bowl, shivering and lonely, even when we dribble on a few meager droplets of skim milk! Sheesh. Well, I can tell you that there is simply no way that my oversized body is going to be happy with that tiny amount of cereal ... so I have been eating TWO servings for breakfast. SIGH. And while the side of the box says that I can supplement the cereal with some fruit, they probably don't mean eat 45 cherries with your cereal -- much less 1/2 a watermelon, huh?
Mini Rant #2 .... Things NOT to say to someone who has told you that they have just started on a diet:
1.Good, you sure needed it.
2. It's about time.
3. Really? It doesn't look like it.
4. Again? Haven't we heard this before?
5. Gosh, how much weight do you need to lose?
6. What do you weigh? I've always wondered.
7. I never need to diet, I have a fast metabolism.
8. Really? I can eat all I want and never gain weight.
9. Is THAT why you are so grouchy?
10. I sure hope you plan to exercise a lot more.
AAAUGGH! All of these responses are just the thing to make me even grouchier .... so just smile and say something encouraging and supportive, ok? I will let you know how it is going.

Ratinhat.... THANKS! Oooooo .... spaghetti squash!!?!? What does it look like? How do you cook it? (Guess I get to go surfing on the 'Net)
Silvaraynebow ...I'd complain to my school board over that sort of meal! You have every right to rant.
=^..^= MOLLY
NOTE TO SELF: Check out spaghetti squash next time I go to Whole Foods. Don't forget to pick up some decaffeinated green tea and check to see if they have sprouted Flax Seed bread.
Rant ... Why is it that the doggies want to get up EARLY on rainy Saturday mornings when I am all snugly~comfy under the warm n' toasty covers? And why is it when I let them out side to "do their business" all they do is get drenched rummaging through the bushes looking for squirrels?

Rant .... Why is it the only way you can join a gym these days is to make a one-year contract before you've even TRIED it for a few weeks to see if it is something that will work for you?
It's like being forced to buy season tickets to a sport you don't even know if you will enjoy watching!!!
And why do gyms that have websites with TONS of information conveniently leave off any and all mention of costs, fees and prices (and won't give them over the phone, either), forcing you to come in JUST to find out it is ridiculously overpriced?
Grrrr......
=^..^= MOLLY (have you had your rant today?)
Oh, and there's no pricing information at the gym either that you can just pick up. You have to speak to a membership associate. Then there's the personnal trainers who keep after you to make them your trainer and that's the only way that you'll be able to accomplish anything! (So, if that's the only way to get results, why has my weight been going down?)
Molly, do you know anyone who goes to a gym that you are considering? Because they may be able to get you a pass to try the gym for free (or you should ask the membership associate). The radio station I listen to on the way to work has health tips on Tuesdays, and last week's was on choosing a gym. The expert (who works at a gym) said that you should always try out the gym before getting a membership and that the gym should have a free trial -- you do have to listen to the membership spiel though!
Good luck on finding a gym and I love your thread!
I got burned by paying 89 a month for 12 months and going like an average of ten times a month, mostly to sit in the hot tub. Ack!!!
Why do people think it's okay to tell you how fat you were, now that you're smaller??? I don't want to hear how ugly I was!! I'm still me!
Today a co-worker said "Looking good! That shirt fits you nicely. Remember when you wore that striped baby-doll shirt and you said you hoped you didn't look pregnant, and I told you it looked cute? Well honestly, it was totally unflattering. But now you look good!"
WTF?! How do I know you're telling the truth this time? And great, I'm glad I look better, but now I have to wonder what everyone's been thinking of me. I was chubby, but I didn't think I was BAD looking. :( bitch.
I soooooooo want to carry a can of Silly String around with me in my purse, and when someone gives me some sort of "back-handed semi-compliment," I can just smile and SSSSPPPLLLLAAATTTT!!! (Let them have it with silly string!) I think THAT would make me feel a LOT better.
Or maybe I will just "thwap" some Cheez Whiz on them! (evil grin)
=^..^= MOLLY
Okay, my turn for a grumble...
Why do people tell you that the outfit you are wearing doesn't look as good as some of your other clothes AFTER you return from a night out. Thanks, really, that's great. I can do a lot with that information now, can't I?
Grrrr...
Don't waste your precious Cheez Whiz on people like that. Tsk tsk, I thought you'd know better. ;)
Molly has a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe's??? Why??? Either one would be great...but both??? Especially when a total Whole Foods fan (such as I) lives in a lovely yet Whole-Foods-less city???
The nearest WF to us in in Atlanta!!! That's in Georgia!!! I live in Florida!!!
When checking out at my fave WF in Marietta (just North of Atlanta)I always mention that I live in Tallahassee and we don't have a WF though we do have 2 universities and one community college and lots of people who attend these institutions come from other parts of Florida and, indeed, the US, and are probably used to WF and wouldn't it be a good idea to build a WF in Tally??? The cashiers are always very polite and say "I think we just built a new store in Florida"...yes, but it was in Sarasota - further from me than Atlanta is!!!
And Molly has a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe's??? AAARRRRGGGHHH!
OK, the good news is I'm headed to Western North Carolina tomorrow and plan to visit the WF in Marietta on the way up and on the way back home...but, I'm still jealous of Molly! :-) (deep sigh...)
hee hee hee .... yeppers, I have a Whole Foods AND a Trader Joe's AND a Cost Plus and a zillion health food stores around here .... that's what you get when you live in a California city of about 500,000 people! We also have some pretty amazing air pollution (and the occasional earthquake), and we average about 30-40 days each summer with temperatures well over 100 degrees. Funny, no one seems to be jealous of our sizzlin' hot summers (which last April til October) or our astonishly poor air quality!
I went shopping Sunday afternoon at a local store for Fish Oil pills ... a vitamin supplement with Omega 3-6-9. There were several to choose from, and after reading labels, we selected one and brought it home. That pills is freaking HUGE! Imagine a hot dog-sized gel pill the color of honey ..... Oh ... my.... gosh.
Ok, I may be slightly exaggerating the size of this uber-vitamin .... but this truly is ginormous!!! I think I downed about 6 oz of water just to swallow the thing! I take a multivitamin, cinnamon tablets, and garlic pills .... all of which are much smaller than this giant thing! SHEESH!

My turn to rant about gyms - UK-style.
They prey on the hopelessly optimistic, seducing you with promises of a lovely fitter you in a short space of time. They may even have nice pictures of young, sweat-free and toned lovelies working out and easy payment terms on offer if only you sign up now!!!.
The reality you need to think about is not the monthly fee, but average cost per use. I estimate that 90% of people who sign up, go maybe 5 times in Week 1, then 3 times in week 2, then maybe twice a month, if that. And you can't resell any unused usage to your mates, so the cost per use might work out at something like £50 or more averaged through your first year.
Gyms rely on this attrition rate, so they sign up far more members than they have space for. For most people they are a complete waste of money. But people don't seem to learn and gyms continue to prosper and grow while we as a nation get fatter.
My solution to exercise: instead I have purchased weights, stability ball and a mat and know enough to be able to design my own exercise programmes, which i do in my living room, sometimes in my pyjamas! I am also lucky enough not to need to lay out money to motivate me to do the exercises - the thing is that I am very fond of routine and have set times for exercises. I am also a keen runner and member of a running club (£25 a year) and run often with my chums, and also alone.
For example, my weekly routine goes like this:
Monday - 6:30 am - weights in my living room (until 7:15) then bike to work and back.
Tuesday - 6:30 am - 5 - 8 mile run then bike to work and back
&nb sp; - 7pm - coaching a group of runners on my bike (more than 20 miles for the day)
Wednesday 6: 30 am - weights and core stability exercises then bike to work.
&nb sp; 7pm - running club run of 7 -14 miles (depending on where I am currently), followed by trip to pub (I don't drink) with all my friends, so that's exercise and a night out all in one. Take tube home!!
Thursday - have a lie-in until 7 am and tube to work, then bike home.
Friday - 6:30 am - 5 mile run then bike to work and back.
Saturday - 7 am - weights in my living room
&nb sp; 10 am - coaching a hill session for runners, involving me running about 5 miles
Sunday - 9 am - long run of 12-20 miles with my chums, followed by brunch at one of our houses.
YOu might think I'm mad, but I love to exercise and get so much pleasure from fitness and my running friends. I have been a runner now for 25 years.
Trouble is, I also have an ED so I have a weight problem... that's why I am on CC.
Dances, actually we do have a vibrant co-op health food store of which I've been a member for over 30 years (it was organized in the 60's). I shop there regularly and find most of the things we want. The problem is, of course, that Whole Foods is about 6 times larger than our little co-op with so many more choices. (The co-op only began stocking fresh, organic meats last year.) OK, OK, I've definitely been spoiled by WF. It would be great if WF could come in and stock our locally produced grass-fed beef and milk, free-range eggs, organic fruits and veggies and organic goat's-milk and cow's-milk cheeses. (Tallahassee is blessed with great local growers and a goat's- and cow's-milk dairy - Sweet Grass Dairy - just north of the state line in Georgia - yes, that's Jane doing a little bragging about her town!) Wow, writing all that down makes me realize how great I do have it here! Thanks, Dances!
Molly, a Costco's, too??? And, hey, we have days over 100 and we have killer humidity (I call the months from July through mid-September "simmer" not "summer"!) but we don't have earthquakes - for which I am very grateful! My brother has lived in LA since 1985 and experienced the Northridge quake. Earthquakes are really scary for a Florida boy! Here, we know when a hurricane's coming - earthquakes sneak up on you! Take care!
Slow, what a schedule! Your blood pressure and heart rate must be amazing! I agree with you about the gym. I'm trying hard to buck the trend by going 6 days a week - but, it is really difficult to do. DH has organized his busy schedule so he goes, at least, 3 days a week. (I haven't had the courage to work out what his membership is in cost-per-visit-per-month!) I do exercises at home, too, and we walk often; but, the gym has some great equipment that I really love for strengthening my back and upper body. I just have to be disciplined and go there and do it.
Well, I have to finish laundry and pack for my trip north. I plan to "stay on piste" while I'm away - the only problem is I'll be seeing my Mom and she makes great cookies which are absolutely wonderful with a nice cup of tea! Courage, Jane, courage!
Bye,
JJ
Stay on piste - why not get your Mum to make them in a smaller size and limit yourself to one per day or something? Mind you, I would have difficulty with following that advice myself!
My resting HR is 42 and my bp is well within normal ranges (less than 120/80), which I think of as unremarkable. But what amazes me (at 52) is just how unusual this is among people of my age. My sister is 51 and is on blood pressure medication (she smokes and drinks). And I spent 18 months internet dating. That was a revelation, I can tell you. What an unhealthy lot the men in my age-group were! It was truly shocking - many are on medication for one problem or another; most were overweight and not one could have kept up with me on a 5 mile run. And for men, age-related circulation issues means that they aren't much good at bedroom athletics either! I dated about 15 men over that period, but few got past the second date with me. I don't want to spend my leisure time knocking back wine and eating rich food.
As I keep saying - the older you get, the harder you need to work to stay healthy.
My current BF is 56 this week, very healthy and sporty and can keep up with me for 3-4 miles anyway. Mind you, his cricket and tennis are far better than mine.
The only rest is in the grave... and I don't want to hurry there!
Walking is great exercise, especially uphill carrying a backpack. Have fun up North.
Slow-Coach:
I agree that the predatory sales tactics of most commercial gyms (and the iron-clad contracts for 1-2 years) are really discouraging and depressing. I have some serious health considerations and am not currently permitted to join a regular gym or begin an exercise regime at home.... so ....
After consulting with my doctors primary care physician and endocrinologist), (we've decided that I will go for an Inital Exercise Assessment at our local rehabilitation facility fitness center. Once that takes place (tomorrow afternoon at 4:30pm), they will let me know how much (how little) I can exercise and what sort of exercise I am allowed to start off with. (They have a therapy pool for water conditioning, which I should be able to do.) The initital assessment is $100, and the monthly charge to use their medically-supervised facility is just $32, with no contracts. Of course, none of this is covered by my health insurance, but we can budget these costs.
And -- unlike ordinary gyms -- I will be there with (primarily) rehab patients and "grownups".... which I like. They are open Monday-through-Friday 6am to 8pm, and for 4 hours on Saturday mornings. I am pretty excited!!!
