MOLLY'S DIET RANTS! (ranting, raving, motivating & more)
RANTING BURNS CALORIES!
This is an open, ongoing, support-encourage-motivational-RANTING thread. Feel free to skip to the end, or spend days reading through all of this ...
* * *
I have decided that "Diet" is a 4-letter word.
I find myself muttering and uttering the word around my house these days with loathing and vehemence previously reserved only for comments directed toward liberal politicians. In fact, I seem to be talking to myself a lot more these days .... sort of a running, sarcastic commentary on all the foods I can't eat, or on various other related topics. I wonder if there is a link between calorie-deprivation and Tourettes Syndrome? Grrrrrrrrr.....
I am now on Day 8 of the dreaded D-word. This is already the longest period of time that I have ever successfully remained on a diet. And I seem to be growing grouchier and feistier each day..... at least when I am alone and no one is around to hear my running rants. (My wonderful DH has heard some of my more memorable rants on the subject of broccolli and reports that I am hysterically funny when I am hungry!) I am counting carbs. I am counting calories. I am counting fat grams. Sheesh ... now my math anxiety is about to kick-in!
Mini Rant #1 .... what masochist decided that the serving size of cereal was anything less than 2 cups? Have you ever measured out 2/3 a cup of cereal? Or even a full cup? And placed it in a bowl? Those few little flakes and pieces just sit forlornly at the bottom of the bowl, shivering and lonely, even when we dribble on a few meager droplets of skim milk! Sheesh. Well, I can tell you that there is simply no way that my oversized body is going to be happy with that tiny amount of cereal ... so I have been eating TWO servings for breakfast. SIGH. And while the side of the box says that I can supplement the cereal with some fruit, they probably don't mean eat 45 cherries with your cereal -- much less 1/2 a watermelon, huh?
Mini Rant #2 .... Things NOT to say to someone who has told you that they have just started on a diet:
1.Good, you sure needed it.
2. It's about time.
3. Really? It doesn't look like it.
4. Again? Haven't we heard this before?
5. Gosh, how much weight do you need to lose?
6. What do you weigh? I've always wondered.
7. I never need to diet, I have a fast metabolism.
8. Really? I can eat all I want and never gain weight.
9. Is THAT why you are so grouchy?
10. I sure hope you plan to exercise a lot more.
AAAUGGH! All of these responses are just the thing to make me even grouchier .... so just smile and say something encouraging and supportive, ok? I will let you know how it is going.

Sue, I know that's bothersome, but the important thing is that the numbers ARE moving downward! Yay!
I always see at least four more pounds on the doc's scale because I weigh myself at home first thing in the morning without a stitch of clothing. Not gonna do that in the hall of the doctor's office! I admit that I'm bothered by it every single time, though. Grrrr
Scales .... eeeeek. Don't get me started.
I foolishly got on the scale this morning (first day of my TOM) .... EEEEEK. I got right back off. Nope, I am NOT NOT NOT gonna write THAT number down. (I ate a bunch of salty sunflower seeds yesterday and think that I am currently carrying around 4 gallons of water!)
Is it just me, or can the rest of you see like a 5 pound water weight fluctuation around your TOM or after eating too much sodium? It's like the tides going in and out for me, it seems.
Still wheezing today, but my wonderful DH took the day off to keep me company, and we actually gote some helpful errands run ... Trader Joes, Smart n' Final, Target, grocery store, plus 5 other stores! We were busy little bees today. We've decided to buy this nifty oak 4-drawer lateral filing cabinet for the office (we found it, but didn't buy it yet) ... and we've decided to get rid of the large desk (there's a built-in desk already) and replace it with a futon couch. So, my plan for the rest of the week is to go through all those desk drawers and get things organized and decluttered. Later this week we will go futon shopping.
Looks like when we go to Hawaii in December, we may be able to meet/get together with another CC'er who (coincidentally) will ALSO be on vacation in Hawaii at the same time... small world, huh? I've already gotten to meet Stellajo from Texas when she came out to California, so I am hoping to meet more of Y'ALL in "real life." (Anyone else planning a trip out to California??)
MOLLY
oh, poor you, that must feel bad. i hope the number will be lower again soon! maybe you might try to add a bit more exercise?
Major Carb Attack!!!
Yikes, I've done bread and now cookies!!
Rant: Why can't I eat just One??? Why does one always lead to many???
I feel "drunk & hungover" on all the carbs. And know I'm flirting with diabetes.
So why can't I stop???
Most people I know have processed carb "addictions" actually .... that's why it's hard to stop over-eating so many of them. (And I'm referring to unhealthy carbs here, not whole grains and veggies/fruits). This is why diets like South Beach start off with a few weeks of practically no processed carbs, to help break the addiction.
For me, being diabetic, I just can't have cookies or things with sugar in them. No need for me to be good and try to just have one ... they are absolutely off limits. And the only bread I keep in the house is high fiber/high protein bread. And when I go out, I don't order sandwiches.... this helps.
MOLLY
We are counting our steps to help lose weight, but there isn't a way to put it in the log. It will only let you put it in as how many minutes.
Also I love Lucky Charms but having been steering away from them. I am eating the same thing every day, which is very weird for me & losing weight. It does make it easier to figure out. A lot less stressful worrying about what I can & can't eat. I do eat different things for dinner though. One of these days I will get tired of doing the same thing every day but I've been getting great ideas from everyone writing in.
Thanks for the tip on South Beach, but there's another problem...nuts! Can't eat them in moderation either! Sheesh!!
Hope everyone enjoys their weekend! We're going to the grandaughter's soccer game Sat and taking the littlest grandson to the amusement park Sunday, Oh, no...cotton candy...yikes!!!!
I've heard that if you abstain from sugar that eventually you lose the cravings. (I've never actually gotten to that point myself...
) I think that would mean not having artificial sweeteners too but I know the people who told me that still enjoyed fruit.
My rant regards Weight Watchers...I just can't stick with it because I get hungry and I hate being hungry. I re-read my South Beach book and decided it is essentially WW with better science. It also doesn't require that I obsess about writing down everything I eat. I was up to 5 columns of analysis in my food log...I'd decided I needed to know not only the points but also the fat grams, grams of protein, grams of fiber and the calories. Too much! I hope SB keeps on working for me because it is certainly much less stressful.
Molly, I am so glad your DH is safely back. Even 100 degree weather in Fresno has got to be a relief to him. I'm sorry it is so hard on you and your asthma.
It is hot here in North Florida (and muggy). I try to think of it as folks up north probably think of their winter...a season for generally staying indoors.
We are repairing part of our deck and find we can only work on it early in the mornings and only then for an hour or so because it gets so very hot. As for the garden I have some herbs, grape tomatoes and chard...it is much too hot for anything else.
The good news is that I'll get to plant lettuce in October! The bad news is we don't have any great vacations planned. Hawaii, Las Vegas, St. Maartens all sound lovely.

Kris: I wonder if you have candidiasis. If you crave carbs either sweet ones or the starchy ones like bread & potatoes, you might have candidiasis. Some other symptoms are recurrent yeast infections, PMS, fungal infections in skin or nails, hypoglycemia, dizzy spells, depression, lethargy, insomnia., bloating, ... the list gets pretty long. Unfortunately, everyone has a different set of symptoms. I have dealt with candida albicans for 2 decades. It can make life difficult, not to mention dieting. Maybe check out The Body Ecology Diet. Try a Google search. It's rough, I warn you, and certainly check with your doc if you have any health concerns. If you want to talk more about it you can contact me directly.
Ms. PW
Guess what we just did? We just bought two plane tickets to Anchorage, Alaska for August 10-19, 2008! Yep, we had such a nice time in Alaska in May on our cruise, that we decided to return to Alaska for 9 days in August! Of course, we didn't go to Anchorage on our cruise, but that's where we're headed in just a few weeks! Why Anchorage? Well, it's one of the easiest Alaska cities to fly to (even from California), and we're using our $50 companion fare from Alaska Airlines that we got for signing up in May for an Alaska Airlines Visa. (The ticket is about $800 ... so getting it for $50 is quite a substantial savings!)
Where are we staying?? Well... we're going to be pretty adventurous in this respect! We have reservations for three nights (Aug 10-11-12) at Elmendorf Air Force Base ... after that we will only know day-to-day if we can still stay on base. BUT, we may also be able to stay at the Army's Fort Richardson -- but THEY only take reservations three days in advance, lol! So, we're hoping between those two adjacent military bases, we'll be ok -- but my wonderful DH is also going to make reservations at a nearby hotel for the 13th-19th, just in case.
What's the weather like? Well, looks like the highs (the HIGHS) will be in the 50s and 60s and rainy .... is that totally AWESOME, or what??? (Can you tell we've had too much hot and dry and sunny weather here in California and in Iraq??) And sunset there is about 10:45pm .... pretty nifty, huh? Hard to imagine more than 19 hours of daylight each day ... we're pretty jazzed! Hmmm.... guess I will need to get out my socks, my bluejeans, and (gasp) t-shirts, huh? (Can you tell I've been living in shorts and tank tops ALL SUMMER???)
yay for a trip to alaska! i bet it will be beautiful
Hello, Ladies!
I'm back from my vacation. As it turns out, I actually lost a little weight while on vacation. Lots of walking in Vegas...LOTS. I learned what "dry heat" feels like AND burned my feet on the hot, hot pool deck. Live and learn, I guess. I really liked the dessert and wouldn't mind living in Tucson (not Vegas, though...too many people!) but I did miss the smells of Indiana.
Good luck on the trip to Alaska. Sounds like a hoot!
Thanks Ms. PW,
I did a bit of googling on the Body Ecology idea, and basically, it boils down to eating to live rather than living to eat! Our bodies need a mix of nutrional foods, not a load of zero nutrition stuff! Unfortunately, that's the stuff oour minds crave, so that's the junk we're more likely to eat when we lack motivation or suffer from food addiction.
There simply is no Miracle Cure, for anything! This takes dedication and willingness to change.
Hello people, I know it's been terribly long since I have checked in but boy do I have to rant…… hopefully worth many many calories!
Let me start at the beginning… back in November 2007 I started this, forgive me, diet-new way of life. I had high blood pressure, was almost 100 lbs over weight, blood sugar levels were high as well as cholesterol, and the obvious being tired, no energy etc. associated with being over weight.
Between November and January, yes during the holidays, I managed to lose 40 lbs! Yeh me! But, and here's the first rant… I'm stuck and have been stuck since then! I've heard about plateaus and all, but please! I'd go through periods of discouragement, fall off the wagon, but generally not for long. I have not gained any thing back, which I am grateful of!
Now on to rant #2… my doctor assured me that if I were to lose just 20 lbs that my test results would be quite different! So last week I went in and guess what… after eating oatmeal EVERY morning for 6 months, very little fast food, cut back on the dairy and fatty cuts of meat, my cholesterol actually went UP!!!! I'm not talking a point, we're talking 10 points!! Are you kidding me? My doctor said well, on the bright side, your good cholesterol went up too--- oh yippi! (sarcasm) AND… my blood pressure is still unmanageable! I'm starting yet another new medication. I feel like the local pharmaceutical guinea pig! The doctor attributes the cholesterol and blood pressure to genetics - 8 out of 9 of us siblings and both my parents have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. (Milk man must have paid a visit 9 months before my brother was born!)
There is a bright side, my blood sugars are perfect and I do feel tons better, and I have dropped 3 pants sizes and almost am in to the next size down, but I really would like to see some improvement on the scale!
Oh, did I mention that my hair is falling out courtesy of the last blood pressure meds I was on?
Ok, rant over, thanks for listening!
I understand your rants complete and feel your pain. I was also told lose a few pounds and we can get you off this medicine. 50 pounds later I'm still on oh yell a new med casue I was on the one where my hair was falling out. Advice on that one tell them to find you another med cause it will leave you with bare spots.
Honestly I dont' think the doctors know much they just say stuff to get us to diet and exercise so they can talk about us behind our backs and say how silly all of us are.
Rant why is everyone feels the sudden urge to tell me what to eat and how much to eat. I've been at this for 2 yrs now I think I get it not some nueb wanting to lose 10 pounds.
Bonsfam, I don't blame you one bit for ranting about that. Especially when we hear about other people getting off their meds --not mentioning any names (MOLLY!) Don't be too mad at the docs though, they can't tell for sure whether it's your genes until you eliminate diet/weight (yet). Think of Jim Fixx; probably in better shape than anyone I've ever met but that couldn't beat his genetics.
I'm glad you can appreciate the good you've gained: feeling and looking better! Hope that darned plateau ends soon for you!
Edited to add my rant: Why do I get notifications for threads I only posted on once, months ago, but not on the threads I post on fairly regularly???
Plateaus are a bummer. However, think of it as your body is just doing a much-needed Maintenance Mode, and you may feel better. I'm doing maintenance for the moment, and keep playing with the same 5 pounds. Either that, or the scale is stuck!
My husband and I were joking around last night, and discussing weird diets we'd be willing to try for a week. My favorite one was pick one protein, one starch, and one green veggie .... then I came up with the bacon-potatoes-spinach diet! LOL! Hmmm... not exactly well balanced, but I bet it would be tasty! (Mmmm.... potatoes cooked with bacon and spinach? Spinach salad with oven roasted potatoes and bacon?
Rant: Why do I keep over complicating my life on purpose? Do I really need to be planning for TWO foreign exchange students in the midst of packing for 10 days in Alaska?
MOLLY
Molly- congrats on your Alaskan Adventure. Sounds fun... I am jealous.
Just got back from vacation myself. Nobody told me it would be 49 degrees in San Fransisco in JULY! Burrrrrrr. I'm a So Cal girl after all. But I do LOVE San Fran and wine country. Missed the earthquake here and apparently my office building had a bomb threat the day after. I missed the fun didn't I? Who needs to go on vacation for adventure? Gotta get back on track though. Cheese, Gelato, stuffed olives, bread, and wine....the five food groups.... nuff said.
Hey, here's a rant that I am actually doing something about:
While reviewing my cable bill, I caught a commercial by the Cable Co about "toll free HD". Well, there's nothing FREE on My Cable Bill. So I called and got the standard "company policy" crap. OK, enough - I wrote to the local TV station Consumer Advocate. And guess who called me today? Yeah, I started something here, and will be interviewed tomorrow! If all TV broadcasts are to be HD beginning Jan 09, is that going to give the Cable companies an excuse to charge us more for their "converter boxes", which are really nothing more than tracking devices to find out what we watch?
Stay tuned, ladies & gents...
