MOLLY'S DIET RANTS! (ranting, raving, motivating & more)

Quote  |  Reply

RANTING BURNS CALORIES!

This is an open, ongoing, support-encourage-motivational-RANTING thread. Feel free to skip to the end, or spend days reading through all of this ...

* * *

I have decided that "Diet" is a 4-letter word.

I find myself muttering and uttering the word around my house these days with loathing and vehemence previously reserved only for comments directed toward liberal politicians. In fact, I seem to be talking to myself a lot more these days .... sort of a running, sarcastic commentary on all the foods I can't eat, or on various other related topics. I wonder if there is a link between calorie-deprivation and Tourettes Syndrome? Grrrrrrrrr.....

I am now on Day 8 of the dreaded D-word. This is already the longest period of time that I have ever successfully remained on a diet. And I seem to be growing grouchier and feistier each day..... at least when I am alone and no one is around to hear my running rants. (My wonderful DH has heard some of my more memorable rants on the subject of broccolli and reports that I am hysterically funny when I am hungry!) I am counting carbs. I am counting calories. I am counting fat grams. Sheesh ... now my math anxiety is about to kick-in!

Mini Rant #1 .... what masochist decided that the serving size of cereal was anything less than 2 cups? Have you ever measured out 2/3 a cup of cereal? Or even a full cup? And placed it in a bowl? Those few little flakes and pieces just sit forlornly at the bottom of the bowl, shivering and lonely, even when we dribble on a few meager droplets of skim milk! Sheesh. Well, I can tell you that there is simply no way that my oversized body is going to be happy with that tiny amount of cereal ... so I have been eating TWO servings for breakfast. SIGH. And while the side of the box says that I can supplement the cereal with some fruit, they probably don't mean eat 45 cherries with your cereal -- much less 1/2 a watermelon, huh?

Mini Rant #2 .... Things NOT to say to someone who has told you that they have just started on a diet:

1.Good, you sure needed it.
2. It's about time.
3. Really? It doesn't look like it.
4. Again? Haven't we heard this before?
5. Gosh, how much weight do you need to lose?
6. What do you weigh? I've always wondered.
7. I never need to diet, I have a fast metabolism.
8. Really? I can eat all I want and never gain weight.
9. Is THAT why you are so grouchy?
10. I sure hope you plan to exercise a lot more.

AAAUGGH! All of these responses are just the thing to make me even grouchier .... so just smile and say something encouraging and supportive, ok? I will let you know how it is going.

I feel like a cat...too funny!  I have a new ring tone "It's the good life to be fREEE the ideal"

Ok Molly I'm back to report a few.

First off got my hair CHOPPED today.  I take in 3 pictures of girls with LOOONNNNGGGG hair say that's my goal this year and I'm half way there.  Next thing I know the floor is covered in hair and a sweep girl comes by and says oh my I'm gonna get this up before you see it.
meaning your hair is cut off.  ha ha   Actually, I have a ton of hair and she felt the need to thin it out.  It's stylish you know.  ha ha
It's cute but not what I thought I was going in for.  It looks like Martha stewarts newest look on her monthly magazine.  So, to quote her "It's a good thing". heee hee  .coping.

On Moving....Ok I admit I have a folder taped to the wall like a hill billy but with all the boxes and porch furniture INSIDE whats it matter? On this folder I mark off a day and we are down to 12 days tomorrow.  At the bottom of this folder I have written the best day of our lives when we move...

These boxes are everywhere.  My husband is tall and thin and easily maneuvers around them.   They were starting to get on my nerves so I had to push them here and there to make the areas plus size

I am getting excited about the move.  I have not entertained the idea of being in this beautiful home ... I really do live and take one day at a time.

I've been singing songs with the word FREEEEE in them.
It's the GOOD LIFE to be FREEE the idea...
Or the beatles  "I just got to be freee"

My last Rant:

Pms and annoying voices don't go together.

Moving!!! Definitely a topic worthy of many a rant ... that's for sure.  All I can say is .... AAAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!  There. I feel better. (Do you?)

I am sure that your hair looks cute, adorable, wonderful, and very, very nice. Still, I've had my fair share of hair-related trouble in the past ... including one time when I .... ummmm.... accidentally died my hair PURPLE. (Well, it was more burgundy or wine than grape colored, but still.)

Rant ... how is it that whenever I go to Walmart, I always end up spending more money than I mean to? EEEK! All we bought were paper towels, paper plates, cat litter, dog food, four new covered cat boxes and ONE package of $4.97 cat toys -- and the total was over $100! *THUD*

=^..^= MOLLY

Molly when I go through check out lines without fail I'm asked if I'm having a party.  I say NO I just eat at home go out once or twice for a meal each week.  When I spend 100 bucks that equals like one or two bags.    I'd rather pay for healthy food than a doctors visit of bad news.  It is funny how when you go to the Walmarts and Sams or wherever....you get a few things and it's always 100 bucks.  I hear ya.   Woke up hair looked cute don't even have to fix it.    I'm off now to get all the kids up.  Catch ya later....

Moving...well that must be a little like trying to decide what's important to pack into the RV for a month's trip!! I'm ranting about trying to pack healthy, lo-cal food!! And if we're leaving NY in winter and hoping to find spring in New Orleans, how does one pack 2 seasons of clothes into one very tiny closet?

Hair...oh, my...have I seen and done a few crazy things with mine!! But right now I'm a bit concerned about the amount that seems to be taking leave of my head without my permission! Yikes, it's falling out faster than usual. And who wants to be a bald-headed bride???

[Moaning in sympathy over the high cost of shopping...aarrgghh] Because the Canadian dollar has become par or better with the American dollar, our stores are crowded with Canadian shoppers, and many things are being sold out quickly. This is making holiday shopping particularly frustrating! Add to that, watching gasoline prices increase almost hourly!

I'll be around early December, Molly. Boy, am I ever jealous...sure hope to get to CA coast some day! But I'll be here to keep posts rolling. I may not have your style of writing, but I sure do enjoy posting!

Don't you worry Molly, the ranting will go on! (not with your panache of course) The last couple of topics could keep me going for days! Moving...haircuts...$Walmart/Sam's$

Moving...I've lost track but I think I've moved 18 times since I was 21...four times in the last two years. You'd think I'd be good at it by now! We still have things (a lot of things!) in our last house --it's owned by the church and is nearly 3000 sq feet. The house we live in now is 1600 not-very-intelligently-laid-out square feet. Since we just got married a year and a half ago we have LOTS of duplicates.

That reminds me, we will be doing the ultimate compromise soon...the Christmas decorations! DH has decorations that are all the same color and coordinate perfectly (he bought them all at once as the result of a house fire a few years ago and a divorce.) Mine are a mish mash of homemade ornaments and ones given to the kids from my mom & relatives. I think his stuff has as much personality as a department store tree. He likes that my stuff all has a story to go with it but he really thinks his are attractive. It's one of the few things we really dissagree about. I got the tree last year and it's his turn this year. Bummer.

Hehehehe...I'm asking myself, does she suggest black because it can be worn repeatedly without washing and no one will notice???

Actually, I like black too....and the black lace undies are a favorite Wink

But, hey thanks for the reminder on the blender! That's one thing we don't have in the RV yet, and I know it'll be very handy! May even take the crockpot too, for times when we're parked and plugged in at a real campground! That is, IF I can squeeze it in somewhere!

Feel free to correct me.  I like to figure out my avg. calories for the month.  The last two months have been 1550 and again I'm seeing that for this month of Nov. And really if I reflect back over several months that's about my avg.  Ok having said that I've loss 12 pounds in the past 8.5 months.  Thats about 1.5 pounds a month.

Ok I know that my bmi or is that bmr??  help me out which is it?
Mine is 1700 a day.  If I'm only subtracting 150 calories from that a day that is why I'm losing slowly.  But not really b/c the math is right.  So, I can't say I'm a slow looser.  I can say I am not permitted many calories.  I mean 1700 is not a lot.

Ok so I do exercise.  I love my eliptical machine and do that a few times every week.

So, what does this mean?  I can loose maybe as much as 18 pounds a year.  Ok I weigh 212 that means to get to my 150 goal it will take me about 3.5 years to get there.  That would be the year 2011.

All I can say is that it's better than gaining 2lbs a month like I was before eating 2200 calories a day.

That's a reality check for me.  I love truth. Can you handle my truth?

I'm not sure what your 1700 calorie a day number is: it could be your bmr or it could be your average daily expenditure (which figures in your activity level.)  As I understand all this you want to be running a deficit of 500 to 1000 less than your average daily expenditure but not less than 1200 cals net (consumed - burned).

I'm 5' 5", 48 years old and ~130 lbs and my daily expenditure is about 1800 (light activity). If I'm going to loose any faster than 1 pound a week, so I don't go under 1200 net, I need to increase my exercise to burn more. I haven't done that consistantly so it's taken me three months to loose eight pounds.

Did you use the Burn Meter or the BMR calculator to find the 1700 cal/day?

FIFTY POUNDS! FIFTY POUNDS! FIFTY POUNDS!

I've lost 50 pounds! I've lost 50 pounds! I've lost 50 pounds! Actually, I've lost 51.8 pounds, to be precise!!! Woooo hooooo! Not too shabby for just a few days shy of 13 weeks, huh? Wooo hooooo! I decided that I just couldn't help myself and I had to sneak onto the scale this morning (shhhh, don't tell my DH Ron!) ... and when I saw the scale reading I just COULDN'T keep it a secret any longer!!!! (Hmmm.... so much for not getting weighed until Christmas, huh?) My plan is to surprise my DH Ron with the happy news when he comes home this evening. I've decided that even though he's promised me a trip to Hawaii for losing 50 pounds, I've decided that my nifty new bike will be my 50-pound reward, and I'm moving Hawaii off as my "lost-70-pounds-below-300 reward" -- which I hope to earn by my 43rd birthday in March. Besides, I want to be in the 200s when I go to Hawaii ... and we can't plan any trip until we know if and when Ron re-deploys to Iraq.

Wow. 50 pounds. It's going to take a while to sink in, won't it? Without surgery. Without diet pills. Without fad diets. Without gimmicks. Without fasting. Without skipping meals. Without starving. Without giving up carbs. Without giving up restaurants. Without living on just shakes, little bars, or purchasing special meals from a special company at special prices. And without some sort of insane, Biggest-Loser-style bootcamp/exercise regimen. Counting calories -- it works! Eating fiber -- it works! Eating more veggies -- it works! Reading labels -- it works! Taking vitamins -- it works! Moderate exercise -- it works! Eliminating junk food -- it works! Eliminating fast food -- it works!

Woah! Good job, molly! Congratulations to you! :)

Does that mean it's time for a dance? ;D *gets on Black Hat and Cane, start tapdancing*

Low calorie (and low carb) Egg Nog recipe ... now posted in my journal!

ho ho ho!

=^..^= MOLLY

I'm on page 40 how ironic is that.

Chris thanks for your truth.  I wish I weighed 130!!! Man I look so good at 130.  I've been there once or twice.  9th grade.  Then again in my 20's.  Only from severe dieting.  I'm not into that anymore.  I'm trying to do it the "old fasioned way".  Hey, I think I'll go insert that in the 3 word phrase.   But any who someone figured out my number and it was 1706 to be exact.  I'm sorry but I'm not gonna do 1200.
I do 1550 and so i'm going to lose slower.  It's just to hard to hit 1200 when you stay up so long like I do.  I like things I can live with.
BUT I'm open minded and in Feb. I'm regrouping with Coach Kat and with her plan it's possible to do that 1200 number.  I lose more too.
So that's what I have up my sleeve.  Again, thanks for sharing.  I see we are the same height.  by the way my prime rose oil and cod liver oil or fish oil cost me 75 calories a day.  But every human should be on the cod liver and fish oil.  You don't want to take stricktly cod liver as it has so much Vit. A so you switch every other day for ideal purposes.  Just ask Dr. Oz he's on Oprah.  Well, the man I live with is his twin.  I hear Dr. Oz talk all the time....and sometimes I feel like a white oprah.  There you have it.
Molly, congrats!!!!!!  Excellent job (even if you couldn't hold off peeking).  It's obvious how excited you are, and it's great to see.  I'm sure your DH will be SOOOO proud!

Here's my rant, relevant to previous posts:  I am on the "slow loser" diet myself.  Because I'm so darn close to my goal weight, AND because I am so short, my daily expenditure is 1,400.  In order to lose ANY weight, I pretty much HAVE to exercise - which I love to do in summer, but this cold weather is just making me want to curl up with hot chocolate.

Staying between 1,200 and 1,400 is difficult - but that still only gives me a 200 cal max deficit daily - which means it takes at least 2 1/2 weeks to lose 1 lb!  But if I eat less - I gain weight too!  It's a weird catch-22 my body has me in.  And to think this is pretty much how I need to eat for the rest of my life!  I refuse to work out 3 hours a day just so I can eat 1,500 calories, so I have learned to adapt my eating instead.  Sigh.  I am playing with ways to up my metabolism with eating frequency and exercise duration (without resorting to caffeine, drugs, or any other weird ingestible substance).  I am also trying not to be obsessive and lead a healthy, simple life. :)  It's just that I gain weight SO fast if I let my guard down for even a week ...
wow, molly. it took me 6 years to lose 50 lbs. thats amazing! i knew you could do it, though. :)

Wow, Molly!!  That is great news!  Did the kitties enjoy your happy dance? (because I know you did one.)

You are so dedicated, and you help keep me motivated.  And you know you're going to Hawai'i.  Now it's just a matter of scheduling it.  That would be a very nice b'day present, I hope Ron is there for your b'day and not over in Iraq.

Congratulations, you are awesome!

Molly, congrats! (also said so on another thread, but for 50 pounds you deserve as many congratulations as possible!)

You will certainly enjoy your trip more having lost so much weight (and the flight will be more comfortable, etc., etc) I hope the timing works out for you regarding deployment!

on another note ---- we talked about husbands cooking - Mine is making "Wasabi salmon burgers" tonight from an Eating Well cookbook.  The picture looks divine.  He's doing sauteed summer quash & zucchini and grape tomatoes as side dishes.  Yum! Oh, and rainbow sherbet for dessert!  My rough calculation, including dessert, would be under 500 cals.  Not too shabby!

Wonderful Molly!!

I just read your post to the DH. Yesterday he came home with some over the counter diet pill because the MD told him to get off 20 lbs in 3 months! Must make hime read the label "Are you disappointed with your weight loss despite diet & exercise? Here's the answer!" Well guess what....without tohe preceding 2, the pill ain't gonna do it!! So I hope he ehard your message!

Good morning to you..... good morning to youuuu......

We started the morning with a nice, peaceful soak in the hot tub, watching the birdies swoop and eat from the feeder, watching a squirrel scamper along the fenceline, watching the sun break through the light fog, and watching two very bouncy little dogs race each other around and around the swimming pool! Whooooosh! (They just whizzed by us!) It was nice (and rather decadent) to stay comfortably snuggled under the blankets, cozily weighted down by the equivalent of a half-dozen fur-covered sacks of flour ... LOL! Did I mention the cats know when the weather turns chilly? Extricating yourself from under cat-covered covers is much like digging out after an avalanche!

I decided that I needed to branch out from my usual breakfast of 2 toasted Thomas' light multigrain muffins, a sliced tomato, 3 Laughing Cow Light mini gourmet cheese bites, and 4 tablespoons of spinach hummus .... so this morning I switched to roasted red pepper hummus, instead! LOL! (Yes, I am reaaaaaaallllly being adventurous, aren't I?) What a delightful way to "spend" 301 calories for breakfast. I am enjoying it with a steaming mug of decaffeinated orange-peach tea (16oz of water, woo hoo!) My blood sugar was inexplicably high yesterday (it was not what I was eating -- must be PMS hormones), so I was gratified to see it nice and low this morning when I got up and tested .... yay!

What's on today's agenda? I was thinking of cleaning out another closet, doing some laundry, and going for a bike ride around our neighborhood! It also looks like it will be excellent play-with-the-dogs outside weather this afternoon, once it warms up a bit (supposed to be in the 70s!) I know that my wonderful DH Ron also wants to get some around-the-house stuff done today, too .... wo we may not venture out much today in the car to run errands ... I suppose we'll just see what develops! At some point closer to Thursday, I want to buy some fresh asparagus .... yum! yum! yum!

Have an awesome Sunday!
