MOLLY'S DIET RANTS! (ranting, raving, motivating & more)
RANTING BURNS CALORIES!
This is an open, ongoing, support-encourage-motivational-RANTING thread. Feel free to skip to the end, or spend days reading through all of this ...
* * *
I have decided that "Diet" is a 4-letter word.
I find myself muttering and uttering the word around my house these days with loathing and vehemence previously reserved only for comments directed toward liberal politicians. In fact, I seem to be talking to myself a lot more these days .... sort of a running, sarcastic commentary on all the foods I can't eat, or on various other related topics. I wonder if there is a link between calorie-deprivation and Tourettes Syndrome? Grrrrrrrrr.....
I am now on Day 8 of the dreaded D-word. This is already the longest period of time that I have ever successfully remained on a diet. And I seem to be growing grouchier and feistier each day..... at least when I am alone and no one is around to hear my running rants. (My wonderful DH has heard some of my more memorable rants on the subject of broccolli and reports that I am hysterically funny when I am hungry!) I am counting carbs. I am counting calories. I am counting fat grams. Sheesh ... now my math anxiety is about to kick-in!
Mini Rant #1 .... what masochist decided that the serving size of cereal was anything less than 2 cups? Have you ever measured out 2/3 a cup of cereal? Or even a full cup? And placed it in a bowl? Those few little flakes and pieces just sit forlornly at the bottom of the bowl, shivering and lonely, even when we dribble on a few meager droplets of skim milk! Sheesh. Well, I can tell you that there is simply no way that my oversized body is going to be happy with that tiny amount of cereal ... so I have been eating TWO servings for breakfast. SIGH. And while the side of the box says that I can supplement the cereal with some fruit, they probably don't mean eat 45 cherries with your cereal -- much less 1/2 a watermelon, huh?
Mini Rant #2 .... Things NOT to say to someone who has told you that they have just started on a diet:
1.Good, you sure needed it.
2. It's about time.
3. Really? It doesn't look like it.
4. Again? Haven't we heard this before?
5. Gosh, how much weight do you need to lose?
6. What do you weigh? I've always wondered.
7. I never need to diet, I have a fast metabolism.
8. Really? I can eat all I want and never gain weight.
9. Is THAT why you are so grouchy?
10. I sure hope you plan to exercise a lot more.
AAAUGGH! All of these responses are just the thing to make me even grouchier .... so just smile and say something encouraging and supportive, ok? I will let you know how it is going.

Reason: Removed sticky 9/12, had been up since 9/4
We bought some itty-bitty mini sweet red and orange peppers at Whole Foods this afternoon. My plan is to half them (scoop out the seeds), pre-roast them with garlic, then drop a 7-calorie Laughing Cow light mini gourmet cheese bite in each one, and then roast them some more until the cheese is all bubbly. Each one should be about 10 calories (7 for the cheese, 3 for the pepper!)
Won't that be a great pre-dinner snack hors d'ouevre for Thanksgiving? And so diet-friendly!!!!

Thanksgiving Day Rant: All the Malls in the area are closed! Not that I was planning to go gift shopping, but I did hope to get in an early morning walk, and the weather report is for snow overnight and all day tomorrow! Now What??
OK, let's find a back up plan. How to get exercise without leaving home? Well, if I still had a VCR, I have some spunky Richard Simmons tapes (he's obnoxious but fun!). I wonder if the Fitness channel is on our cable?? Housecleaning, now that's a constructive use of exercise...nah, not on a Holiday! Maybe I can get the DH to chase me around the bedroom for an hour or two? (One can only hope!)
Well, somehow or other, I will get some exercise before Thanksgiving dinner! That's my "game plan" and I'm sticking to it!!
Our YMCA, which is the gym I go to is open for shortened hours tomorrow. However, both tomorrow and friday morning, they are having special 90 minute turkey-blast classes! They are being taught by more than one teacher and just sound like so much fun. Of course, I can't go because I will be out of town, so I will have to motivate myself to run in the cold, but I think it's neat that the Y is offering that!
Ok, this may not be as much fun, but do you have steps? You can go up & down the steps a bunch of times and get a real workout!
DH, kids & I had a lovely dinner last night. Of course I could not help myself and stepped on the scale this morning. Why, oh why do I do this to myself? Up 1.2#. Now, I know it will come back off -- it was only one dinner, and I didn't go totally crazy -- but it's still more reality than I wanted. Just can't seem to stay away from the darn thing!!!!

Hooray Molly! Way to go. I had good news today too (anti-Rant following). Had a Dr's appt and blood pressure was best ever! Also, he wanted to measure my waist (what waist!) so I told him I didn't want to hear the results. Well, he said they were significant so I asked him to tell me. 3 1/2 inches! Wow - doing the happy happy Snoopy dance for Molly and me too.
When I asked about the scale not moving he said to stop weighing, obviously what I'm doing is working and I shouldn't obsess over the scale. Of course I intend to reject this thought and will continue to drive myself crazy daily.
It is so motivating to have a good result and I hope and pray this will carry me over the next while.
Molly-
Where do you find those 7 cal cheese things? They sound great - I've just about given up having cheese period.
My wonderful dear husband Ron surprised me this morning when I rolled over in bad about 9am and he was still there!! WOOO HOOO! He decided to stay home today so we could enjoy the glorious fall sunshine together (since tomorrow it's supposed to be colder and grey!) He had a wonderful time this morning using his new "Batter Blaster" pancake-mix-in-a-spray-can (sort of like whipped cream in a can) and he made himself pancakes for breakfast! (I got a tiny, silver-dollar sized one with sugarfree syrup as a treat!) He is soooo excited about "instant pancakes" -- and finding an organic brand, even! You can find the coolest things at Whole Foods, ya know? Batter Blaster ... http://www.batterblaster.com/ (There's even a video on the website!)
We then headed with our duck food and squirrel food to the park -- and had a lovely time feeding our furry and feathered friends. We even saw and fed a brown bunny (who came racing over to us when he saw we had food!) This tradition has roots in my childhood, when my mom always bought a bag of peanuts in the shell to put out around the trees on Thanksgiving morning for the squirrels and the blue jays -- just sort of a fun way to express our Thankfulness and sharing our bounty. Anyway, Ron and I got married in 2003 and adapted this tradition to our own ... we now take a LOT of peanuts, banana chips, oyster crackers and chicken feed down to the duck pond at a local park and provide a holiday feast. This was our 5th time doing this -- and (as always), it was just delightful. Then we were off to the grocery store because I was nearly OUT of dill pickles (Oh, horrors) and running low on Laughing Cow Light Gourmet Mini Cheese bites. We also stopped by the Post Office to mail a package to our friend Wayne, who is deployed to Iraq.
My menu today ... pretty veggie-focused, I'd say ... yum! yum! yum! Here goes ...

Laughing Cow Light Gourmet Cheese Bites .... LINK TO THEIR HOME PAGE
We buy them at Von's or at Smart n' Final or at the asian grocery store where I get Shirataki Noodles! I've seen other Laughing Cow products at most grocery stores .... their light wedges are just the same thing in a bigger size ... 35 calories per wedge.... but I love the mini bites.
LINK TO FINDING A STORE THAT SELLS THESE CHEESES
If you love The Laughing Cow® Light Cheese Wedges, you'll love The Laughing Cow Light Gourmet Cheese Bites™. Each bite size cube contains the same creamy-delicious light cheese, but the bite size cube makes it even easier to eat anytime, even without a cracker or celery to spread it on. Just unwrap and eat. Five Bites equal one wedge, so you can decide how many delicious Light Gourmet Cheese Bites™ are right for you...

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I just wanted to say a special thank you to Molly, who is such an inspiration!

Well, the night before our Thanksgiving Day was sure .... ummm.... exciting. Sometime around dinnertime, we decided that the water in the swimming pool was running low, so we turned the water intake on for the pool. What we SHOULD have done, in hindsight, was set a timer. But, nope, we just blissfully went about our business. About 5 hours later (about 10:30pm), I glanced into the backyard and realized, in horror, that the swimming pool had overflowed into our backyard and onto our patio ... and several inches of water had created a small lake on our patio with water lapping at the two sets of sliding glass doors! AAAAUUUGGGH!!
So, at 11pm at night with the temperatures in the 40s, we sloshed around our backyard getting the water shut off, getting two pumps with really long hoses draining the water down the side of our house to the street, and using push brooms to help swoooosh water away from the sliding glass doors and down the side of the house. You cannot imagine how sore my arms and shoulders and back is this morning! And my feet are STILL cold! By about 1am, we'd been successful enough to cease and head to bed -- having narrowly averted the Great Flood of 2007! (And what a fabulous upper-body workout, huh?)
Anyway, I'm thankful we spotted the flood before it did any more damage, and I'm thankful we were able to work together in a "semi crisis" to get the problem resolved ... and I'm thankful that our back patio and pool decking and the side of the house are all MUCH cleaner having been scrubbed down with chlorine water and vigorous push-brooming. And I'm thankful that because I've lost 53 pounds so far, I was healthy enough to jump right in (literally) and make a splash of helpfulness for my dear husband! And, finally, I'm thankful that I got in an unexpected workout!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!Original Post by shrinking_caro:

HAPPY FRIDAY everyone - hope you all had a great Thanksgiving.

Well done, Molly! The biggest plus (I bet) was feeling able to help with such a physical job!
Molly - how many activity cals did you get to log for the pushbrooming? Yipes!
Caro - Tunisia sounds totally cool! Great photo too.
