MOLLY'S DIET RANTS! (ranting, raving, motivating & more)
RANTING BURNS CALORIES!
This is an open, ongoing, support-encourage-motivational-RANTING thread. Feel free to skip to the end, or spend days reading through all of this ...
* * *
I have decided that "Diet" is a 4-letter word.
I find myself muttering and uttering the word around my house these days with loathing and vehemence previously reserved only for comments directed toward liberal politicians. In fact, I seem to be talking to myself a lot more these days .... sort of a running, sarcastic commentary on all the foods I can't eat, or on various other related topics. I wonder if there is a link between calorie-deprivation and Tourettes Syndrome? Grrrrrrrrr.....
I am now on Day 8 of the dreaded D-word. This is already the longest period of time that I have ever successfully remained on a diet. And I seem to be growing grouchier and feistier each day..... at least when I am alone and no one is around to hear my running rants. (My wonderful DH has heard some of my more memorable rants on the subject of broccolli and reports that I am hysterically funny when I am hungry!) I am counting carbs. I am counting calories. I am counting fat grams. Sheesh ... now my math anxiety is about to kick-in!
Mini Rant #1 .... what masochist decided that the serving size of cereal was anything less than 2 cups? Have you ever measured out 2/3 a cup of cereal? Or even a full cup? And placed it in a bowl? Those few little flakes and pieces just sit forlornly at the bottom of the bowl, shivering and lonely, even when we dribble on a few meager droplets of skim milk! Sheesh. Well, I can tell you that there is simply no way that my oversized body is going to be happy with that tiny amount of cereal ... so I have been eating TWO servings for breakfast. SIGH. And while the side of the box says that I can supplement the cereal with some fruit, they probably don't mean eat 45 cherries with your cereal -- much less 1/2 a watermelon, huh?
Mini Rant #2 .... Things NOT to say to someone who has told you that they have just started on a diet:
1.Good, you sure needed it.
2. It's about time.
3. Really? It doesn't look like it.
4. Again? Haven't we heard this before?
5. Gosh, how much weight do you need to lose?
6. What do you weigh? I've always wondered.
7. I never need to diet, I have a fast metabolism.
8. Really? I can eat all I want and never gain weight.
9. Is THAT why you are so grouchy?
10. I sure hope you plan to exercise a lot more.
AAAUGGH! All of these responses are just the thing to make me even grouchier .... so just smile and say something encouraging and supportive, ok? I will let you know how it is going.

Molly: the english muffins are great but I finished them in two days. I think they are not for me:(
I finish mine in 2 days ALL the time! Sometimes faster. They are a great source of fiber and I love them for breakfast and sammies! Just think of all your fiber!

It sure felt like winter here today ... it was cold and grey for much of the day, and then the sun broke through this afternoon and it was just glorious! We got a lot of errands done, and decided to put off our mountain adventure until Monday! (This means we got to hit Trader Joe's and the grocery store for MORE VEGGIES!) I can now happily report that we are nicely restocked with yellowfin tuna steaks, frozen shrimp, vitamin B-12, Thomas' light multigrain english muffins (they were on sale!) and, of course, lots and lots of veggies! Since tonight's dinner is beef and bulgur (one of my favorite combinations), I decided to match it up with four servings of fresh broccoli and two servings of fresh asparagus ... yum! yum! yum!

We went to a Christmas Party tonight at my DH's sister's house.... and saw both of his sisters, in fact. As I expected, neither mentioned how I looked or my weight loss... which was a bit disappointing since I've lost 67 pounds and it really DOES show.... and they haven't seen me since August (before I started dieting.) I was so careful in picking out what to wear, too (new smaller jeans, new smaller t-shirt, cute holiday vest -- two or three sizes smaller, actually). (sigh)
Oh well. ![]()
I was good and didn't eat or drink anything there except ice water.... I ate dinner before we went so I wouldn't be hungry.
When we left, I was still pretty bummed ... so my wonderful DH took me shopping (coupon in hand) to the JCPenney's Home Store where we got two new bath towels (in a lovely shade of lime green!) for just $1.07 ... after using the $10 off coupon ... they were on sale!!!
Yay, new fluffy lime green towels. As to in-laws ... Bah, Humbug!

Molly, don't let your SILs get you down!
YOU know you look better, feel better, and are much healthier than you were, and you're not finished yet!
It's a bummer, for sure, but people can be insensitive sometimes, even if they don't mean to be. And sometimes people are afraid to mention weight loss because they don't want to call attention to the fact they are aware of another person's previous size.
You have a wonderful husband. Lucky you!!!! Give him a big kiss! ![]()
Happy December 23rd, people. Today would've been my parents' 47th wedding anniversary. (They both died in 2004, within three months of each other; they were both in their 70s.) I remember that my poor father could never remember if their anniversary was on the 22nd or the 23rd, so he would just start giving my mom cards and presents on the 20th and keep going every day until he hit Christmas ... LOL! Well, he was quite the problem-solver, wasn't he? I think my mom knew that she could just remind him of the ACTUAL date, but didn't. After all, she got a LOT more presents this way! (grin) They were married at Ceasar's Palace in Las Vegas (where my mom worked at the time ... she was the executive secretary to the general manager) and my dad was a part-time Sheriff's Deputy and car salesman. My mom was originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and moved to the United States in the 50s, and settled in Las Vegas -- still in its infancy back then, but very much the boom town. My dad was born in Detroit, Michigan and grew up in Los Angeles, and after getting out of the service (he was in the Pacific in WW2, and then a POW in Korea) -- he also moved to Las Vegas. They lived in the same apartment complex and met one day when he spied a painting hanging in her living room through an open door and commented that it was the UGLIEST picture he'd ever seen. (Hee hee hee ... it was! My sister in Las Vegas still has that ugly painting!)
We're getting some things done around the house today ... laundry (of course), assorted pet-care related duties (of course!), filling bird feeders, skimming leaves out of the swimming pool (Autumn still hasn't ended here in central California), and dusting off my tricycle since someone is coming this afternoon in response to the ad I placed on Craigslist to try and sell it. (Well, now that I've "graduated" to my nifty 2-wheeled bike, it seems wasteful to have the adult trike just languishing on our back patio. I'd rather see someone else get to use it and enjoy it, and at least recoup PART of our investment in it, ya know?) Then we need to take back some sweat pants to Walmart (too big ... yay!), a snowflake light to Orchard Supply Hardware (too big), and three frames to Aaron Brothers (we found ones we liked better, and cheaper, at Cost Plus.)
Today's menu is filled with healthy veggies!!!

Thanks Molly! I actually picked this time to start because I figured if I could just avoid gaining 5 lbs that would be 5 lbs I didn't have to lose later on.
I still have the Christmas battle tomorrow. Merry Christmas everyone ![]()

I just passed 5 lbs today, and I feel positively skinny. I was able to walk a kilometer today without feeling puffed at all. 'Course my dog had to smell ever pole and tuft of grass twice because she had been away for a week. (bad weather) Anyway, if I manage to keep it all together today, I figure I can manage to keep it fairly light tomorrow too. My dog lets me sleep until 10 am, but tomorrow we will do 9 am. I will take her for a walk, have coffee and shower before I have breakfast, so that will end up being close to 11 am.
My companion will come over by 10:30 and get the turkey in the oven, and then we will both open gifts. He will hog the computer until 2:30 or 3 and then we will likely eat dinner by 4:30 or 5. By 7:00 he will say he is tired and go home to bed. In reality, he is having serious nicotine fits, and wants freedom to chain smoke without comment. I don't comment, but I am an EX-SMOKER and I think he believes he should follow me into Health Haven, and feels guilty for not wanting to be me.
And therein lies the reason he is a very sometimes companion. He loves my dog, and we share children (he is my ex from 30 years ago) and because I have known him for 55 years, he is very comfortable to be around for me. Sadly, I am not for him I suppose, but then, I can't stand the smell of day old nicotine on everything.
CHUNKYPROGRAMMER... Wow... good for you, and I must add good for me... this is my2nd Monday, so if I can do what I said above, I expect I too, might be able to holler 7 yays.. YOU GO GIRL. ![]()
Peace and good health (and nothing worth ranting about) to all!
Merry Christmas!
Chris
Thanks fransen, congrats to you on your success!!!!
I'm with you on the smell of nicotine. While it's better for him to try to quit, I'm glad he doesn't smoke around you. 2nd hand is just as bad.
Hope your turkey turns out great. I'm still turkeyed out from Thanksgiving.
Spent a lot of time outdoors this afternoon and evening (30s.... brrrrr) with the doggies (so cute in their new matching fleece hoodies) .... but my blood sugar had plummeted and I had a bad case of the munchies. (And I'm PMSing, too.)
So I munched.
High fiber cereal, unsweetened vanilla almond breeze, and salmon jerky. Whole grains and lean protein. 350 calories' worth. Oh well. That still leaves me a 650 calorie deficit for the day.
(sigh) I wish I didn't feel so guilty for eating that.
=^..^= MOLLY
So... what's in store for us today? Ron and I will get up early and spend some delightful time together outside in the hot tub, watching the fog, listening to chirping birdies, and watching the sunrise. Then inside for tea and quiet time, followed by breakfast and probably more snuggling. (Dogs will be played with, cats will be petted!) Lunch will be at lunchtime (steamed broccoli and a turkey sandwich with apple), then we may go for a walk in the afternoon. A friend is coming over at 4pm, with dinner around 5:00-5:30 (spicy tuna sashimi salad, roasted acorn squash, grilled asparagus, roasted red pepper hummus)... then we're watching a musical .... 7 Brides for 7 Brothers.
Yesterday (December 24) was cold and drizzly and we did a lot of running around (literally ... outside with the doggies) and in errands, and I ended up with low blood sugar and a case of the "hungries" in the afternoon, so I used my after-dinner snack calories THEN. So, I ended up with 1535 calories for the day ... over a wee bit (but it was high fiber, whole grain cereal and lean protein, so it was OK!) Dinner last night was fresh green beans, roasted butternut squash, a crisp-crunchy salad, and yummilicious ostrich burgers! I was pretty distressed about the prospect of going over my calories by about 250 ... but then just decided to forego my after-dinner, before-bedtime snack, and that kept the calorie "overage" down. As of right now, my December nutrition is right on track, calorie-wise, fiber-wise, and nutritionally ... just six more days of healthy eating for the month! (In fact, my fiber is UP over last month!)
I have to admit that my eyes and thoughts are on this upcoming weekend's weigh-in ... the last for 2007. Will I have stayed the same? Lost a little? Lost enough to dip below 300? Well, if not this next weekend -- then surely the first weekend in January, huh? I just need to keep reminding myself that I cannot control the scale ... I can only control my food and nutrition choices! Still, it will be nice to look back and see how much weight I've LOST in December ... a month where too many diets get derailed!
The eating plan for today ...

Happy Wednesday to youuuuuuu..... It's a grey and cold and foggy day here in central California. My menu is all planned (yay!) and we're planning for a delightful (and sunny!) afternoon in the mountains before heading home before dark. I'm glad we're finally going since, once again, I seem to have seriously depleted our supply of fresh veggies.... hee hee hee. Who would have ever thought that I'd need to go grocery shopping TWICE a week just to keep fully stocked with spinach, tomatoes, radishes, cucumbers, red peppers, acorn squash, butternut squash, artichokes, asparagus, brussell sprouts, onions, mushrooms, green beans and cabbage! Anyway, as part of my goal to aim for 10 meatless meals per week, tonight will be a vegetarian dinner for me -- with my protein coming from two Boca vegan burgers and two slices of Kraft fat free sharp cheddar singles. I thought that they'd be pretty tasty marinated in garlic and grilled with diced onions ... yum! yum! yum! I am excited because my wonderful DH took the entire week off from work, so we have five more sleep-in/snuggling days together before he goes back to work!
We had a good friend over for dinner yesterday (Dec. 25), which was really nice. (Spicy tuna sashimi salad, cinnamon-roasted acorn squash, garlic-lemon grilled asparagus and toasted english muffins with roasted red pepper hummus!) After we watched a movie together (one of my favorite musicals from the 1950s ... 7 Brides for 7 Brothers), she went home and we decided to clean out one of my wonderful DH's closets. (OK, I decided to do that, and my bemused and cooperative husband was a pretty good sport as I decided to declutter at 10pm at night!) Anyway, we now have a bunch of bags of men's clothing all in the midst of being Freecycled, and a LOT more closet space ... wooo hooo!
Thanksgiving? Stuck with my healthy eating plan. Vacation to the coast? Stuck with my healthy eating plan. Holiday parties? Stuck with my healthy eating plan. Christmas? Stuck with my healthy eating plan. Wooo hooooo! I'm sticking with this ..... which is nothing short of miraculous!!!!!!!! Now all I need is for my scale to cooperate, ya know?

Original Post by mollymouser:then we're watching a musical .... 7 Brides for 7 Brothers.
One of my absolute all-time favorites. :)
Howard Keel was so dreamy ... that voice and that red hair. Wowza.
In case anyone REALLY cares, I had banana squash and green beans instead of butternut squash and spinach (for lunch). And instead of a whole cucumber, I had half a cucumber and half a cup of cherry tomatoes. My calories are still in line, of course.... just a slight veggie variation!
