MOLLY'S DIET RANTS! (ranting, raving, motivating & more)
RANTING BURNS CALORIES!
This is an open, ongoing, support-encourage-motivational-RANTING thread. Feel free to skip to the end, or spend days reading through all of this ...
* * *
I have decided that "Diet" is a 4-letter word.
I find myself muttering and uttering the word around my house these days with loathing and vehemence previously reserved only for comments directed toward liberal politicians. In fact, I seem to be talking to myself a lot more these days .... sort of a running, sarcastic commentary on all the foods I can't eat, or on various other related topics. I wonder if there is a link between calorie-deprivation and Tourettes Syndrome? Grrrrrrrrr.....
I am now on Day 8 of the dreaded D-word. This is already the longest period of time that I have ever successfully remained on a diet. And I seem to be growing grouchier and feistier each day..... at least when I am alone and no one is around to hear my running rants. (My wonderful DH has heard some of my more memorable rants on the subject of broccolli and reports that I am hysterically funny when I am hungry!) I am counting carbs. I am counting calories. I am counting fat grams. Sheesh ... now my math anxiety is about to kick-in!
Mini Rant #1 .... what masochist decided that the serving size of cereal was anything less than 2 cups? Have you ever measured out 2/3 a cup of cereal? Or even a full cup? And placed it in a bowl? Those few little flakes and pieces just sit forlornly at the bottom of the bowl, shivering and lonely, even when we dribble on a few meager droplets of skim milk! Sheesh. Well, I can tell you that there is simply no way that my oversized body is going to be happy with that tiny amount of cereal ... so I have been eating TWO servings for breakfast. SIGH. And while the side of the box says that I can supplement the cereal with some fruit, they probably don't mean eat 45 cherries with your cereal -- much less 1/2 a watermelon, huh?
Mini Rant #2 .... Things NOT to say to someone who has told you that they have just started on a diet:
1.Good, you sure needed it.
2. It's about time.
3. Really? It doesn't look like it.
4. Again? Haven't we heard this before?
5. Gosh, how much weight do you need to lose?
6. What do you weigh? I've always wondered.
7. I never need to diet, I have a fast metabolism.
8. Really? I can eat all I want and never gain weight.
9. Is THAT why you are so grouchy?
10. I sure hope you plan to exercise a lot more.
AAAUGGH! All of these responses are just the thing to make me even grouchier .... so just smile and say something encouraging and supportive, ok? I will let you know how it is going.

I took about 6 weeks off from the gym and I am paying BIG TIME. I cannot believe how stiff and sore my lower legs are! I suppose I should appreciate that those muscles are saying 'Hello' but I look like I'm about 102 when I first get up from my desk. I'm trying to fake a normal walk when any of the professors (average age ~32) are around.
I'll be working some extra hours during the evening next week so I'm trying to make sure my routine can accommodate both getting to the gym and getting to my regular job early. My DH is doing his part by making breakfast...which is good... but sometimes he seems to have a hard time remembering that I have a 1300 cal/day limit. This morning I managed to drag my tired butt out of bed and through the 18 degree weather to the gym. When I got home & out of the shower he was starting breakfast by slicing home baked bread with the intention of making french toast! I felt like a heel but told him that really wasn't so good for me. We had Smart Balance omlets instead and toasted the bread. Everyone was happy but I HATE having to rain on the parade like that!
Original Post by mollymouser:Hmmm.... I actually LIKE Fritos ... their ONLY ingredients are corn, corn oil, and salt .... no weird additives, no chemicals, no artificial colors or flavors and no preservatives. From a chip standpoint, they really aren't all THAT bad for you, once in a while.
Just don't eat them with yer feet, k?
MOLLY
Hey, and you can also use them as candles! I saw one of those cable tv survivor-man shows and the guy took a chip out of his pocket, put a match to it, and the thing burned just like a candle. He said it was from the oil in the chip, and he did it so that he had more time to light his fire than just a match would give (I think- I was totally fascinated by the flaming chip!).
Sooooo, even though there may not be broccoli candles, we could actually come up with a frito candle! and wouldn't even need a wick!
* sniff ... sniff ... sniff *
Decisions, decisions ... have a house that smells like toasted Fritos ... or have a house that smells like burnt broccoli?
:: giggle::
I am pleased (and somewhat relieved) to report that our newest foster dog, a GIANT creamy white Golden Retriever named Tessa does not smell like Fritos. However, since she insists on going out into the rain and rolling around on the grass in our sodden and soggy back yard ... I can say that she smells an awful lot like ... wet dog.
(Which, by the way, would NOT be a good scent for a candle, k?)
We got a call late yesterday afternoon asking if we could foster a really LARGE dog for a short while (until next week) so that she could be rescued out of a bad situation. So, even though we have absolutely NO experience with LARGE dogs (much less polar bear dogs like Miss Tessa), we said yes. The challenge is keeping her separate from our two mini monsters... errr, doglets ... because Minnie the miniature Pinscher (all 12 pounds of her) is convinced that SHE IS THE QUEEN PROTECTOR WARRIOR DOG -- and she doesn't bat an eye at challenging large dogs 10 times her size. To make things a wee bit more challenging for us, Tessa has never worn a collar, never been on a leash, never been in a crate, never been inside, never driven in a car, never been to a vet, never met strange people, never met strange dogs, and thinks cats are interesting creatures worthy of being chased and tasted. (I posted her photo from last night in my journal!) But she is a breathtakingly beautiful dog, and it does my heart good to see her warn and cozy inside (in our huge crate), and to see her fluffy tail wag.
By the way, our "Severe Winter Storm Event" has arrived, and they are forecasting gusting winds up to 50mph ... so I am half expecting a power outage over the next day or two. If I seem to drop mysteriously off the face of the earth, rest assured I'm happily snuggling with Tessa the Polar Bear until the power returns.

Molly: I'm in San Fran, and it's INSANE up here.
Hope you and the foster pup are staying safe and warm down there :D
Mini-Rant: Why do the caramel chocolates taunt me? WHY do inanimate food objects speak to me? And why are good things like carrots and cucumber mute?! WTH?!
I moved....could not find my soup pot. Looked for a few days. No deal. So, sent daughter to Target to get me a soup pot. Found My pot the very next day in the garage in a box.
Beep Beep (I don't curse just beeps)
thank you for this RANT page
I've found that I pretty much need to either log everything separately, or -- if it comes in its own package -- to input it myself and then tag it. This seems to be the best way to get accurate information out of the Calorie Counter!
It's rainy rainy rainy rainy rainy rainy rainy here .... and windy, too.
I'm feeling soggy tonight .... must be all the water I've been drinking alllllll day.
=^..^= MOLLY
Take care, California girls!
Regarding water--I've discovered the way to keep myself on track, at least during the week: one 16 oz bottle in the car on the way to work, one bottle while at work, one bottle on the way home, one after I get home (don't worry, they're refilled, not using THAT much plastic!). That's 64 ounces, minimum. And it doesn't seem too hard to do. That way, any more is a bonus!
Now I have to see if I can have a weekend routine as well...
Pattikins, good idea about the water! Right now, drinking low-sodium bouillon seems to be my most efficient way to get in more water....
I had an "unofficial sneaky weigh in" (USWID) day today ... before my official weigh-in day (OWID) on Sunday and was a bit disappointed since I was hoping for a bigger loss (it was a small loss) .... but I also know that there's still Saturday (another USWID) and then Sunday's OWID.
It can be so frustrating eating 1500 calories per day (resulting in a daily calorie deficit of 1000 calories) and not seeing the 2 pound loss that I am "supposed" to be seeing, ya know? Oh well.... I can't control the scale or my metabolism, just what I eat and how much I exercise. My goal for January is 90 minutes of cardio per week, and I'm at 73 minutes so far ... so I should meet this goal this week assuming all goes as planned. (I just spent 20 minutes on the treadmill!)
And I'm REALLY trying to drink more liquids this week, too ... I've had at least 60 ounces so far today, so I better go drink MORE.
Hope you're all eating healthy! My goal for this weekend is to stay on track with calories, hope for a lower OWID than my USWID, drink more water, and get in the rest of my cardio!
Oh, and keep a large wet dog from shaking herself off in my family room!
=^..^= MOLLY
Today's (Saturday) USWID was .4 better ... but I still am at just a 1.6 pound loss for the week, and I really really really really really wanted that 2 pounds.
Sheesh. Grrrrrr.
Oh well, there's still the OWID tomorrow.
(Maybe I will read excerpts from the 101 Ways to Murder Your Scale thread to my scale....)
=^..^= MOLLY
That oughta' work, Molly...
I've seen some GOOD ones....!!! ![]()
OK, I printed out all of the ideas from the scale murdering thread and laid the pages on the scale ... so it has time to think.
(I think I heard a whimper.)
Tomorrow will tell.

Good Luck Ms. Molly! I know you will get that last fraction of a lb off before the weigh in!!!
I tried on 2 pairs of jeans tonight that were tight in October when I wore them on my wonderful trip to NYC and (drumroll please!!!) today they fit perfectly!! I think I have lost 7 lbs but I don't own a scale so I will have to do it Monday at the gym!!
My rant/fear for tonight though: I have to go to a rubber chicken banquet luncheon on Tuesday (no control of ingredients /menu) then get on a plane to Kansas City until Thursday morning and I am freaking!!! Ever since I started paying such close attention to ingredients and reading sooo much about sodium, trans fats etc that restaurants have in foods, I am so worried. I need to be talked off the ledge because I don't want to fall off the wagon thinking "I can't control it anyhow so might as well have the fries/dessert etc!!" Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated!!
The rain is heading my way next Molly (Arizona) so the DH and Nancy the Cat and I are battening down the hatches!!
Susie :) :) :)

Susie ... just scrape off any mystery sauce from the rubber chicken, and hope for the best. When you arrive, ask a server if there is dessert and what it is. Then you can decide if you'd rather have potatoes/roll, or the dessert.
Stay dry ... if that's possible!
=^..^= MOLLY
aaack.
Had a restaurant steak last night, gained a lb. this morning. I even scraped off the seasoning that I could tell was sprinkled on there. But I did eat some mushroom, which I could tell were salty. Why do I not learn!!!!!
All in all it won't make any appreciable difference, since most days I eat fairly low sodium (under 2000 mg). But it still kills me when this happens. I'm trying to keep a lid on the sodium today, so I can have an official weigh in tomorrow morning and not be ticked off....
I got a Pilates machine I ordered. DH is going to set it up tonight, so by next month maybe I'll be moving like a ballerina!!!! lololololol Really, though, after only 20+lbs lost I can tell that I am actually moving more gracefully. Just one more weight loss benefit!
Apparently my scale can't read.... and showed only a 1.6 pound loss this week for me and NOT the TWO POUND LOSS it's supposed to be showing.
*locks scale back in the closet*

Good news for Taco Bell fans ... they've now expanded their lower fat "Fresco" menu to include 9 items ... http://www.tacobell.com/fresco/ (I am pretty jazzed about the 150-calorie crunchy tacos ... yum yum yum)
Merry Monday, everyone. In some ways, I'm rather relieved that the weekend is over ... in addition to being a stormy one (weatherwise), it was also a bit stormy for me (morale-wise). My blood sugars were still a bit low on Sunday (along with my spirits), so my wonderful DH thought I should take the evening off from "strict calorie counting" ... and I ended up with a daily calorie total of 1784 ... 284 over my 1500-calorie limit. Oh well, at least it still gave me a deficit of 676 calories. (My normal deficit is 960 calories). I did get in my 21 minutes of cardio on the treadmill Sunday, which means that I achieved my weekly January cardio goal of 90 minutes for the first week of January. It's a start, right? My official weigh-in was Sunday morning (the same as Saturday morning) ... 297.4 ... which represents a one-week loss of 1.6 pounds and a 20-week total loss to date of 71.6 pounds. (This is my second-lowest weekly loss in 20 weeks, for those who are keeping track of these sorts of things!)
I've now applied for about 20 different full and part-time jobs in the last month or so, without even one interview as a result. I think that they take one look at my resume, see that I used to be a trial attorney, and refuse to even consider me for a $10 per hour administrative assistant position. (sigh) What I am absolutely sure of is that I cannot look for a job in the legal field, nor can I look for a higher-paying, stressful position right now.... so I will just have to keep applying for some of these lower-stress (lower paying) positions and see if some employer is looking for someone who is organized, bright, hard-working, articulate, fun-loving, and remarkably over-educated and over-qualified for whatever position they are hiring for. My New Year's resolution of getting our savings built back up really can't get off the ground until I can start collecting a paycheck, ya know?
Monday I will be escaping the house for a little while to get some errands done ... I need to mail a few boxes at the Post Office (and buy some stamps), pick up some roasted red pepper hummus and puffed millet creal at Whole Foods, and pop by my friend Nancy's house so she can hem some cute casual pants for me (ok, they're jammies bottoms!). And, since Nancy was the friend who helped me with my first set of measurements in October (2 months after I started dieting), she said that she'd help me get some new measurements. Assuming they're positive, I'll post them ... maybe. (OK, maybe not the actual figures, but maybe an inch or two lost here and there.)
Lunch Monday is an english muffin, salmon, corn on the cob, steamed broccoli, a cucumber and some radishes. Dinner Monday is the leftover sirloin, grilled up with some mushrooms, onions and peppers, slathered with spicy Sicilian pasta sauce and served over Tofu-Shirataki spaghetti noodles. Oh, and some snow peas on the side with some balsamic vinaigrette. That gives me a solid 14 servings of veggies for the day, and a nice balance of fats, proteins and carbs. I am trying to eat fish at least twice a week, and sometimes lunch is the easiest way to fit in some salmon or tuna.
I wonder if we'll get any sunshine this week? Anyway, it's after 2am and I should probably wander off to bed!
=^..^= MOLLY
Molly, I'm sure you'll get a nice surprise sometime and loose MORE than the 2 lbs/week you're 'supposed' to loose. I know how maddening it is, though.
It seems we're having California weather in Central PA right now. It was 47 degrees this morning at 5:30 when I went to the gym. That compares to 18 when I went last week! Then I tried to make myself feel better by recalling that a person burns more calories in the cold. I don't care, I like the warm weather better!
Don't ask me why but my DH and I started a little bread baking kick this weekend. I baked four loaves of white, two loaves of dark rye, 9 sub buns and one loaf of italian bread. Obviously I'm going to have to be VERY careful about how much I indulge in the products. It is pretty fun, though. I went to a little Mennonite owned store where they sell a lot of bulk items and picked up all kinds of whole grains and seeds. (Great deals too: caraway seeds in grocery store, $4.67; Mennonite store, $1.35!) I can't wait to experiment!
OK, a BIG rant: I rolled out of bed and went to the gym early on Jan 2nd. Like any sane person I didn't wear make-up and only finger combed my hair. Someone just came in my office and asked me if that was me on the FRONT PAGE of the newspaper Saturday! ACK!!! I heard the reporter interviewing the guy on the elliptical next to me and even saw him taking pictures but I didn't think I would show up from the angle of the camera. I even jokingly threatened the reporter that I would hunt him down and kill him if he took my picture! I guess I have some hunting to do.
Hey- rufus_k!
I once had an MRI done with a cold... it showed the crud in my head was awful!!! It adds weight...! ![]()
Your body might react with a fluid shift, too... ![]()
No fun, but maybe it'll help if you consider the weight isn't probably accurate for now! ![]()
Will I lose weight if I eat the same food over and over?
You can lose weight despite eating the same food day-after-day as long as you eat fewer calories than you burn. In fact, eating the... Read more
