More calories needed

Quote  |  Reply

Ok, I found myself in a little problem tonight....  I had only consumed 900 cals for the day so needed to top them up a bit so......... I had a glass of wine!  Is that like a HUGE no no or do you think it is ok to bump up your calories with alcohol?

once in a while id say its ok! just not every night hehe, hope you enjoyed it :)

I enjoyed the first half a glass but then after the second half of the glass I just felt sick!  I use to have 3 - 4 drinks a night but stopped due to trying to loose weight and live healthier... think my body has now really adjusted to my new way of life.... Can only be a good thing I think!

I don't see any problem with having a drink occasionally to bump up your calories.  But, on the days when you need to bump up but don't feel like wine I have a suggestion.  When I'm find I'm low near the end of the day, I usually find I'm a bit low on fiber, calcium, and/or vitamin C too.  So I have a bowl of cheerios with milk and sliced strawberries.  It's about 180 calories if you use 1% milk and boosts a lot of your "good" numbers without much effect on the others.  (Of course, this only works if you like Cheerios).

An occassional glass of wine is not going to hurt you.

You need to a plan for days when you come in low on your calories though.  Have something in the cupboards or fridge that you don't have to prepare, but can just grab.

If you're only at 900 calories come evening (and it happens to me once in awhile, too), your body probably needs some more nutrition for the day.  Wine is OK, but isn't doing much for you nutritionally.

A few suggestions:

- a microwave Lean Cuisine 280 calories

- a glass of 1% milk 100+ calories

- a can of tuna in water 175 calories

- a serving of nuts 50-200 calories

Any one of the above will give you a quick boost!

If you're not having this problem often, I don't think it's a big deal if you're under. You're not going to go into starvation mode if you don't eat 1200 calories for one day. But certainly if you're hungry you should eat to bump up your calories. I'm simply saying that if you aren't hungry, I wouldn't force myself to eat something just to boost how many calories I've had. Listen to your body. If it isn't hungry, you'll be fine. But I think wine is a great way to boost calories! A nice little treat. Wine has good antioxidants too! If you're hungry though, it might be more satisfying to chew something. My point is...don't force yourself to eat when you're not hungry, and I don't see a problem with treating yourself with wine!

Hey!  I'm sorta the same.  Its  funny cause 2 days ago I posted  that it was 2pm and I had already had 950 cals... well today I have pre logged my snack and dinner and it only goes up to 890cals. I do have some almonds and popcorn to nibble on - I guess I'll just pour myself a nice glass of milk to have with dinner :)

One glass of wine a night is actually pretty good for you! Especially pinot noir for red and pinot grigio for whites. They both contain the highest amounts of anti-oxidants respectively. Not only that but a number of studies have shown that one glass of wine or one beer in a day can actually improve your health. Provided you don't go beyond the one drink in that case it can be exponentially harmful. (so just don't binge) Otherwise it is linked to losing weight, reduce forgetfulness, boost immunity and help prevent bone loss. I know sounds too good to be true but look it up! Because alcohol thins your blood is helps to loosen clogged arteries.

"The whole idea that red wine keeps us healthy comes from something called the French Paradox. Scientists noticed that despite a diet loaded with saturated fat, very few French people actually croak it from heart attacks.

Just 83 out of 100,000 Frenchmen die from heart disease compared with 230 in the US. The difference? The amount of red wine they drink."

"2. Keep the scale in your corner
Studies find that people who drink wine daily have lower body mass than those who indulge occasionally; moderate wine drinkers have narrower waists and less abdominal fat than people who drink liquor. Alcohol may encourage your body to burn extra calories for as long as 90 minutes after you down a glass. Beer seems to have a similar effect."

Hey- last night, I was under my calories also and I went out after class to have two glasses of wine with friends.  This morning I woke up and I didn't gain- I actually lost!  Of course, it was probably because I was dehydrated, but I think its a-ok to have a glass of wine once in a while :)
