More exercise, more weight loss?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi. I was wondering what you guys thought about vigorous exercise routines?

If I pushed myself to work out every day of the week for more than an hour, do you think I would lose weight faster than if I worked out at a more moderate pace for less time?

I'm an 18 year old male, 5'10 200 lbs.

You would DEFINITELY lose weight faster if you had a more vigorous exercise routine. I have tried both, moderate and vigorous exercise, and whenever I am working the hardest I see the most results. You have your heart rate at a higher level, allowing you to burn more fat. Working out at a moderate level will also help you lose weight, but if you want it faster, definitely to the vigorous exercise.

Im curious about this also. Do you still lose more weight if you eat more when you exercise more for instance...

Moderate Cardio:

Sedantary burn: 1900

Moderate Cardio: 400

Consume: 1300

deficit: -1000

Vigorous Cardio:

Sedentary burn: 1900

Vigorous Cardio: 800

Consume: 1700

Deficit: -1000

So im just wondering if you would still lose more weight at vigorous cardio if you consume more to keep the same deficit...does that make sense?

Sorry for mouching off your question Xorph!

The amount of weight you lose will be determined by your deficit but remember calories burned by exercise are estimates and there is a large margin of error.  Having said that, the amount and type of exercise that you do will have a big impact on the type of weight you lose, you want to keep your muscle and lose fat.  You also want a healthy heart and a strong skeletal structure.

That's alright. Feel free to mooch, haha.

I plan to work out more than an hour regularly, and vigorously, to see the results.

In addition to what trhawley said. Exercising regularly helps to maintain the deficit. Look at it this way. You can either do not exercise and starve yourself on 1500 calories (just an example), or do an hour of some good exercise and eat normally 2k calories (again just an example). In both instances you have 600 calories deficit, but in second case you geting benefit from exercise and can eat more normally. :)

You lose weight only by having a deficit. So like the other posters have said, if you have a 500 cal deficit through diet and exercise, you will not lose faster than if you had a 500 cal deficit through diet alone. However, you will look better if you do it through exercise and you will most likely lose fat than lose muscle if you exercise.

I also prefer to exercise in order to create a deficit because I love to eat (the reason I ended up on this site in the first place!). I was absolutely miserable trying to stick to 1400-1500 cals a day. But now that I am exercising every day, I am steadily losing weight eating 1700-1900 cals everyday. It is a much more enjoyable process.

First! the more vigorous you workout, the more calories you burn.

Keep in mind, chances are, you will also get more muscles. Muscles use up more calories than fat even when at rest. So it is like a win-win situation. Just make sure to increase the intensity gradually.
