How can I get more fiber without eating more calories?
Asked by karen1009 on Mar 11, 2009 in Health Conditions

I must eat twice the daily amount of fiber from bran to go to bathroom, and the calories add up.  What can I do?

Answer

Some bran cereals have more fiber than others, and so choose the cereal with the most fiber per serving.  For instance, Kellogg’s All Bran with Extra Fiber has 13 grams of fiber per 50 calorie serving (1/2 cup) compared to Post Bran Flakes with 5.3 grams of fiber per 96 calorie serving (3/4 cup).  You could also eat more high-fiber, low-calorie produce, like spinach, artichoke hearts, strawberries, etc.  If you increase your fiber intake from all sources to 35 grams a day, you probably won’t have to eat as much cereal.  Read about high fiber foods at About.com.
