More sweat = more fit?

Quote  |  Reply

I once read that a more fit person will sweat more during a workout than a lesser fit person.  Does anybody know any truth to this?

Thanks!

I don't think it really makes any difference??  I take medication that makes me sweat more as one of the side effects - I also notice if I drink a lot of water before my workout I'll sweat more during the workout.

I take classes at the comm college and seen "wimpy" people sweating buckets as well as the buffier dudes and dudettes.  So from what I've seen and done it has no bearing.  Its what you put into the workout itself I think that makes the most difference.

Hmmm, I just noticed that I really charged up my workout and Im sweating A LOT!! Im far from fit though, Im over 200. I think it just depends on how hard you push yourself and if your a sweater. LOL.

I would take such pronouncements with a grain of salt. The amount that you sweat can vary a lot depending on your environment. I sweat like a pig on the stationary bike, for example, simply because I'm just sitting in stagnant air. But when I am running, either on the indoor track or outside, I barely sweat at all because the air is circulating around me and cooling me off, even though it takes a lot more effort to run than to sit on a bike.

i dont think thats true at all as some people sweat like crazy and there in great shape

I was watching this ufc thing and it was with brock lesner before his first ufc fight and this guy is like in great shape and he says he can drop a few pounds of sweat in a workout he says he just sweats like crazy

What? Overweight people sweat much easier than normal weight - does that mean they are more fit?

The OP was saying the more fit the more sweat so you are proving this point but the poster moscovite was disproving it by stating heavier people sweat more.

LIke I said I don't think its either or - everyone has a different sweat level.

Sweat is related to your body temperature.  Generally, if you are working hard you will sweat more to cool yourself off.  People who are out of shape often have to work harder (thus generating more heat) to carry out the same task as someone who is in good shape, so I would assume they would actually sweat more.

That said.  I'm in good shape.  I work hard and I sweat a lot.

In reality it is just down to the individual. However, the amount that you sweat is related directly to the amount that you drink - since generally fitter people (not necessarily lighter people) do more exercise so they tend generally to drink more water in anticipation, especially if they are athletes who are particularly aware of their liquid requirements - therefore sweat more - it's as simple as that!

Hope this helps...

I noticed the better shape I am in the more I will sweat.   It has something to do with teaching your body how to disperse body heat more effeciently.

katieandmatt,

i think it is true:  fit people are more efficient sweaters than unfit people.  what i mean is, they sweat earlier in the workout (their body predicts that they'll be increasing exercise soon, increasing body temperature and getting super hot and needing to cool off).  check out this articleFit people sweat more “efficiently” by sweating sooner in the workout, in other words, at lower internal temperatures. However, this doesn’t mean that a fit person will always sweat more than an unfit person will. A sedentary person doing the same intensity workout as a fit person will get hot a lot faster and therefore will sweat more.

so even though an unfit person may be sweating buckets, fit people do sweat more in proportion to their work intensity (an unfit person will sweat more doing the same intensity workout as a fit person.  an unfit person will probably sweat LESS doing their usual routine than a fit person will sweat during their usual routine.)

I've noticed that if I haven't worked out in a while or have been eating junk food, my sweat during workouts will be thicker/heavier, and when I've been working out regularly and keeping to my diet, the sweat is a lot lighter.  I don't know if there's a difference in quantity though...

I have no clue.....BUT for me, I sweat WAY more now than I did when I first started working out....but I think tigerleaf has a good point; I probably drink a lot more water now, and I probably workout harder, too.

I usually drink 2 litres of water throughout my workout and I'm not a huge sweater, but I can run for a long time.

I do pee a lot after my workouts, though. :P
