More then 2 pounds a week!

Quote  |  Reply

I am worried about this...I joined a month ago and I am obese. I am trying to lose over 100 pounds - probably close to 150...BUT...in the first month I lost 18 pounds, if you do the math thats roughly 4.5 pounds a week!!!! I wasn't trying to, I didn't create a huge deficit or anything! It just seems like pounds are flying off. I went to my doctor after reading all these posts about it being unhealthy. He said since I have so much to lose, I might see rapid weight loss in the beginning. He recommended a supplement, and also said my calorie intake of 1700 isn't anything that is unhealthy. So now I am confused. I am very excited about losing all this weight, but everyone is freaking me out telling me I can't lose it this fast. Shouldn't I be happy!? If I make this lifestyle change and stick to it, is it really that bad that I started out losing more then 2 pounds a week? I am sure it won't come off this fast as I work my weight down...

In your case it's perfectly fine, you can safely lose 5lbs a week or more depending on your situtation and depending on how long you are doing it. I lost 5lbs a week for a few months... probably the first 75 lbs of my now almost 95lbs. Now it's coming slower as I get close to my goal weight and started lifting weights. If you weighed 135 and were losing 5lbs a week then you should be worried... I am presuming from your weight loss goals that you're not in that situtation. If you are doing it right then your body will determine how much you lose a week.

I agree, at your weight there is nothing wrong with losing that much every week. In fact CONGRATULATIONS!! Well done!

I lost about 13lbs last month but this month only lost 6lbs and I know it's because I cheated badly on the food side of things.

Keep up your good work eating at 1700cals is reasonable I do the same kind of thing.

You should be very happy with your achievements so far!

I agree on the supplement I do take a multivitamin everyday just to ensure I'm not short on any of the vitamins and minerals.

Great job!

Like archer already said it makes a difference at what weight you are at. For people in the obese category it's safe to lose 4-5 lbs a week but it won't go on forever.
Congratulations on your progress! I, too have to agree with the above two posts.  I have heard of many obese people losing more pounds when they being healthier eating habits.  I am glad that you consulted with your doctor, and he feels that this is fine for you.  You and your doctor know you best, just make sure to keep your doctor up to date.  Also, remember to consult with your doctor before you start your exercise program.

Bigger beginning weekly loss for bigger people is normal, yes--you'll be okay.  Remember to drink lots of water to help your body flush out all the byproducts of combustion.  The faster you lose, the more important that is.
Congrats on your progress and your concern for doing this in a healthy way but you are absolutely within normal range.

The early big weight loss is like a sign on bonus.

Some crazy numbers?  I started at 465 and after 2 weeks lost 22 lbs.  The next two week lost 14 lbs.  That was the end of the honeymoon and it was about 4 lbs weekly since but for me 4 lbs is 1% of my weight.  You should level out like the rest of us.

That very intial phase of dieting the body starts going after body fat, as if still used wanting the higher fuel comsumption of previous larger calories.

so enjoy it while it lasted and theres no worry.  It does level out and
If someone is obese or overweight, and they stick hard core to a diet for a week, the amount they lose at fisrt is still normal if its over 2 lbs. Jenny Mcarthy was on weight watchers and dropped 5 the first week. Usually after a while the weight comes off steady at like 2 lbs a week. Then it will plateua.

hope i helped!
Thanks everyone for your posts...I was feeling guilty about feeling so good...(which doesn't make sense) I just want to make sure I am doing this right, I am well over a month on CC now, and thats the longest I have lasted on any diet...AND the most I have lost on any diet. Clothes are already getting loose! SOOOO HAPPY!!!!

Awesome! Enjoy the feeling and keep on it. Don't get discouraged when you aren't losing 5lbs a week anymore. ;-)

jessiforan,

I too am obese and in the first month I lost 18 months, then the 2nd month 12 pounds. I was like WOW 30 lbs in 2 months!!  Then by the 3rd month it dropped lower and now 8 months into it, I lose on average approx. 10 pounds a month give or take. Some months I only lost 5, maybe 7.  So no worries.....just sit back and enjoy it!
