I've been here in Japan for a year and half and I notice 95% of Japanese girls are slender and in good shape...  I wonder how they do it???  winter, summer or fall...they are all the same...  how could they keep it???...  i always gain weight on winter, no matter how I minimize my in take..it seems my weight keeps on gaining...is it because I don't sweat much?...  how come Japanese girls do?...  anybody knows???... I appreciate your thoughts!...SheWink

SORRY , BUT I AM PRETTY SURE IT IS ALL GENETIC.

ASIAN GENS ARE SLIMMER THAN LET'S SAY ... CACUASIAN GENS .

IT IS OBVIOUSLY NOT IN ALL CASES ... BUT , SCIENCE HAS FOUND THAT METABOLISM COMES IN THE GENES ... AND FOR THAT .,.. U CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT . ...

My understanding is also that it is so largely based on pressure. In the US, you occasionally get picked on for being obese, but overall, you life the same life. In japan, young girls especially, worry intensely about their figure. And their families usually support that way of thinking. You typically can't even find clothes in Japan if you where above a size 10, or a 'hippy' size 8.

I've been applying for jobs there, and have recently been told by others working there that my weight might be a problem X_x

Japanese people in america are not particularly or necessarily slim. This would make the 'genetics' argument suspect. Though the typical build is obviously genetic. I would say diet and social pressure are most likely.

My family used to live in Japan, I was just a little girl so of course I was thin but my parents and siblings were thin as well.  Then when we moved here they ballooned.  They are now obese and I am not on the thin side anymore.

It is mostly to do with their diets.  The portions were smaller and we ate fish all the time.  Red meat and chicken were not a daily part of our diets.  Not to mention we did not even own a car.  We either biked or walked to parks, schools, work, hospitals- everywhere.  That is what I miss most- I loved being in a city where we could walk anywhere we wanted to go.

I actually found a really great video on this topic a few days ago:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51L0TlXxZ9U&am p;feature=PlayList&p=0739655240172F10& ;playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=47

it talks about the Japanesse diet vs. the American diet and how in Japan they're accustomed to healthier foods, smaller portions, slower eating (becuase they use chopsticks), ALOT less sugar, tons of veggies and fish, etc.

Asian girls are definitely not all predisposed to being skinny....! Like all the other women out there, some probably have higher metabolisms and some lower...

The reason why most are thin, is b/c of pressure and wanting to conform. Trust me, I'm asian. =) I fluctuate between a size 2-4 at 5'1" and I get comments ALL THE TIME from my family and relatives when they think I'm eating too much. In their eyes, I'm pretty much borderline chubby, which for my smaller frame is fairly accurate.  Just because I fit in a 2 or 4 doesnt mean that I don't have too much fat for my frame. In North America weight allowances for any given height is much more forgiving.

All Asians are slimAll black people are superior athletesAll white people are bigotsBlah blah blah...

At least ... I AM NOT saying all asians are slim ... I am saying asian genes tend to be slimmer . They are certainly not ALL slim ... Have you seen sumo wrestlers????? ... Asuming that all of the people of certain background or race are in a certain way would be really ignorant from my part ... and even racist .

But there are certain tendencies in genes that have been natrurally slsected through evolution , and there are medical and scientific facts behind this claim .

And yes , there are genes persent in certain native africans that make their muscles stronger than the msucles of other people in the world . There are certain regions in the world in which people tend to be taller ... and some that are certainly smaller . And there are genes that make some people fatter ... and some of them skinnier.

By the way .,..based on this facts , there are american and british scientists working on an obesity :vaccine:.... google it ... it is very interesting

HA! Yes, sumo wrestlers are a good example of the non skinny Asian. Thank-you. Laughing

I do understand what you are saying about genetic tendencies being pre-dominant in certain races...without a doubt that physically there are definitely differences.

It's probably a combination of both. So having grown up in Canada, I ate all sorts of things that girls in Asia don't eat much of which would account for my more "athletic build" as my mother likes to say...and point out.

Someone else made a point about how diet is changing in Asia as well. When I was living in Tokyo, I noticed alot of the younger girls were much more "robust" than the older Japanese women who were more of the tiny, frail type. That is due to the change in traditional Japanese diet which now consists of much more meat than in previous years.

I'll check out that vaccine!

Yeah, I posted a link to a sumo under "All Asians are slim."  Click the links and see...

I don't think eating slower has much to do with chopsticks. I can shovel food into my mouth just as fast with chopsticks as with a fork.
