Mother's 50th Birthday
Any suggestions to get my mother for her 50th? She isn't a materialist person and I bought her enough nick-knacks over the years and she said no more. I do not want to get her those over the hill gag gifts because those are not only insulting but a waste of money. Any ideas?
Thanks!
edit, typo
bother = mother
My dad has or can buy anything/everything he needs. What he prefers is spending time with me. For his birthdays I either take him to a movie and out to dinner OR, last year, I brought the ingrediants to his house, spent the day with him and cooked him dinner.
OR! You could do what my brother did for my dad on his 50th... He took him sky diving!:D

What would Freud have to say about this?
My mom was super stressed about her 50th, so I got her all stuff to help her relax. I put super fuzzy slippers, a little box of truffles, a bottle of bubble bath, some really nice tea, an eye mask, and some other spa stuff in a basket.
I am pulling together a digital frame and loading it with a lifetime of memories for my MIL...(mother's day gift)
My mom for her b-day always liked going out on a day trip, lunch somewhere she's never been, art museums, flower shows, a matinee, or even help around the house, with a home improvement project, or gift card to the home improvement and garden shops, one year we went to a Jethro Tull (a mom fave) concert.

I know, my excuse is that my hands are cold right now this morning... brrr ;)
So far these are really good ideas, thank you!
I think that spending the day with her - maybe go out for brunch or lunch together ... and take along a camera to take pics of the two of you together and then give her the pics as a momento ... time spent together is almost always better than a material gift! Have fun!
I turn 50 this year, and I would love any kind of spa treatment for a gift. Especially a massage. Does your mom work-out? A session with a personal trainer maybe? And like mentioned above, time with my kids is ALWAYS a special gift.
Digital picture frames filled with memorable are a good idea for anyone! I got one for my university graduation and we got my grandma one for Christmas.
Lots of good ideas.... here are a few more....
Make an album (imo, better than a digital picture frame because you can WRITE your feelings....ie. I appreciate you teaching me how to cook~pictures in the kitchen; You showed me so many wonderful things ~pictures from trips;) You could title it "50 wonderful things about my mom". You can use "hard" photos or digital. I help people make albums all of the time (that is my business!) I don't know if I can give you my website on cc... if I can't, someone let me know and I will remove it. www.mycmsite.com/cmarusiak you can download free software there and import your photos and stories. Then you download it to the photocenter and they mail you a book. It is excellent quality. I don't know a single person who didn't LOVE their book!
Take your mom for a manicure and pedicure, then lunch and a movie!!
Go on a hike and picnic lunch!
Hike the Grand Canyon and stay at Phantom Ranch (at the bottome). If you decide to do this, PM me and I will explain how to get reservations for the lodge at the bottom and everything else you need to know before you go!
Take a yoga class together!
Spending time together is most important to me--have fun and good luck!
These are all great ideas! One more - my dad is pretty hard to shop for. For his birthday this year, my brother and I decided to make a charitable contribution in his name instead. We did research on a bunch of charities and found one that we thought would really resonate with him, since it addressed issues he cares about deeply. To go along with that, we put together gourmet food basket with lots of unusual and fun things for him to try. He loved it! He was also very happy to spend the day together as a family, which we don't get to do too often.
