Motivational Books You Should Read!

Quote  |  Reply
So I love to read, and I love to stay motivated with my goals, one of my big ones being losing weight and keeping it off in a healthy way. I've read a few books that have helped me (I found them and their reviews on amazon.com) and I think they can help others!

1)"Thin For Life: 10 Keys to Success from People Who Have Lost Weight and Kept it Off" by Anne Fletcher (who is a dietitian) is about a group of people whose eating and lifestyle behaviors were observed over a period of years. These people had lost weight and kept it off and they share their experiences in this book. The book is FULL of information and tips, and it's really interesting.

2) "Secrets of a Former Fat Girl" by Lisa Delaney is about a woman who was overweight most of her life until the age of 25. She went from a size 16 to a 2 and she shares her struggles and her turning point. She writes like she's having a conversation with you which I love. She knows everyone has the power and tools they need to lose weight and keep it off. She can totally relate to struggles having to do with excess pounds. This book would inspire even the person who has gone through 2304983209 diets and never lost a pound. This book may actually change a person's life and their way of thinking!

3) "Weight Loss that Lasts: Break Through the 10 Big Diet Myths"
by James M. Rippe. My review from amazon explains it: "The book goes through 10 diet myths, the kernels of truth behind them and the entire truth afterward. The first is that you cant lose weight and keep it off. Its actually much easier to do this than it used to be decades ago because there have been more studies and experiments about the science of losing weight. (The failure rate for losing weight and keeping it off used to be around 95% in the 50s!) There are many more programs these days that can help practically ANYONE lose weight and KEEP IT OFF. The major program the book goes over is Weight Watchers, which is one of the flexible programs many people have success with for years. There are other myths that people should be aware of that may be stopping them from losing weight, like You can lose weight with exercise alone. Many people overestimate how much exercise they are doing and how many calories it burns. Unless you change your diet, its extremely difficult, almost impossible to lose weight with increasing exercise alone. Another myth is that willpower is the key to weight loss. The truth is that willpower is just one part of the weight-loss equation and its role is often overrated. Having the wrong metabolism and genes is another big myth. The truth is that with the right knowledge, support, among other things, like 99% of us can lose weight and keep it off no matter what our genes are like. There are other myths like There is only one right approach to losing weight, Your weight is your problem, and you need to solve it on your own, You can boost your metabolism by what, how, and when you eat, A few extra pounds dont matter, and Calories Dont Matter, avoid fats or carbs to lose weight successfully I wont go into detail about these, but overall the book is packed with information and its very interesting, educational and inspiring for people who are struggling with their weight. If you dont want to spend bucks on it, I recommend getting it from your library!!"

These are the ones I' just got a few from the library: "The Incredible Shrinking Critic" by Jami Bernard, "Think Thin, Be Thin" by Doris Wild Helmering and Dianne Hales, and "Weight Watchers Coach Approach"

I also want to read, "Eating Mindfully" by Susan Albers, "Life is Hard, Food is Easy" by Linda Spangle, "Breaking the Food Seduction" by Neal Barnard, "100 Days of Weight Loss: The Secret to Being Successful on Any Diet Plan" by Linda Spangle,  "The Overfed Head" by Rob Stevens, and David Schwartz's "The Magic of Thinking Big" which does not specifically target success in losing and maintaining weight but has to do with any aspect in a person's life.
**These books I chose because they don't seem to be about DIETING so much as developing and maintaining a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. This is why I think they will be helpful to you.

***Again, check out any of these books on amazon.com for reviews if you are interested and if anyone has read any good motivational books, please share with us!***

Books can really be a great source of motivation when you are doing great on your weight loss journey or not and need something to get you back on track and thinking positively.

I randomly picked this book out at a library but found her to relate to my life and relationship with food almost paralled...the book is called It was Food vs. Me and I Won.  I read the first few chapters and it was like "she's in my head and knows exactly how i feel" I am going to check it out once i get my freakin library card.
The most motivational books I love are the three written by Dr. Oz, and Dr. Roizen called You the Owners Manual, You on a Diet, and You Staying Young. They are a guide to make our bodies healthier and younger. Excellent!! Try them!

"Potatoes Not Prozac, A Natural Seven-Step Dietary Plan to Stabilize the Level of Sugar in Your Blood, Control Your Cravings and Lose Weight, and Recognize How Foods Affect the Way You Feel" by Kathleen DesMaisons

"Sugar Blues" by William Dufty

"Lick the Sugar Habit" by Nancy Hamilton

=^..^= MOLLY

I can't wait to get a copy of "Secrets of a Former Fat Girl"  - thanks!!!
Joyce Vedral has some really motivational books. I currently am doing her Definition workout but my mother-in-law has some of her other books and I have picked them up for reading. Many of her books are workouts if your interested in toning up and feeling good about your body. Just google her or look her up on Amazon to see the many books she has written.

my favorite book was wasted by marya hornbacher. its kind of an autobiography, she was extremely anorexic her whole life. at one time only 52 lbs. and she wrote it when she was only 24 or 25 just a couple years after her recovery, so she was still struggling. its one of my favorite books. its not really a "how to" book but while i was reading it i lost like 7 pounds without even realizing it...it just made me feel disgusting.. i cant really explain it but its a fabulous book.
Sonja-  I just finished that book.  It really shows the destruction of ED.  I think the author would have had problems even without the ED (some of the things she did WOW)  I have had the book for about two years and reread it a couple times a year.  It makes me wantto lose weight but the extremely healthy way.  I wonder how the author is doing now
