I got hit while riding my motorcycle (gsxr1000) today, I was going down the highway in the leftlane with a car about 80ft or so infront of me in the right lane. As I was passing him, they decided that they wanted to go into the left lane. I saw it coming and would have normally braked so he didnt hit me but there was a car to close behind me (like always). So I pinned the throttle ( was already doing like 75mph-ish) any way i didnt get out of the way in time an the guy clipped my back tire. Then there I went sliding down the highway ( was in full riding gear ). I was lucky enough not to get hit by any cars behind me, I think they saw it happen and had time to break. anyway my bike is all F'd up, I was luckly (if you call it luck) that I was able to get up and limp away.. broken ankle and pretty beat up in general.. but Im alive thanks to ATGATT (all the gear all the time)  Anyone els got any crash stories?

bastard!  glad you're okay.

i have a near-miss story.  riding my V45 magna in northern arizona in august, in one of those late-summer monsoons, i was on a narrow blue highway, and at the bottom of a long hill, on a hairpin turn, was a cattleguard.  between the rain and the grease on the metal, my rear wheel slid out from under me.  the bike was almost flat when i got to the pavement on the other side and recovered.  yikes!

i've had many, many close calls that easily could have ended the way your day did.  that's why when i'm following a bike in my car, i always stay way back and try to act as a buffer between the bike and other vehicles.  and when riding, i never ever assume that anyone knows i'm there.

Hope your ankle heal quickly and your not in too much pain.

I broke my leg last year at a stop sign, not a crash at all,  the bone just gave out with a pop  and broke in two places and ended up in wheel chair for 4 month and took year to recover with P.T.  so that was the end of my riding days. Sold my vstar 1100 the past summer and bought a mustang.

Where's my friend vstar? she has a story.

Yea when im in a cage and im near a bike i try to act as a protective layer between them and the other cars... this isnt my 1st time going down. and iv had many close calls. I remember my first close call with new paint lines in the rain like it was yesterday.  Ever since I moved to Sportsbikes from cruisers, I always wear all the gear...I was even wearing my joe rocket boots today so Im in a way still sorta shocked about my ankle... Im more "angery" about my bike than anything

Friend of mine has had 2 crashes (probably more but I remember hearing about these 2). One he broke his back, second his thigh got skinned and needed a skin graft (bet he was wearing just jeans or something). I believe both weren't his fault.

Iv read and believe that most accidents arnt the riders fault and are usually due to some thing on the road or another driver

I would believe that. A couple of days ago I was riding my bike to work & had to cross the intersection, almost get hit by a driver turning left from the inside lane to the outside lane. After work I am riding my bike home & had to cross the intersection (same road, one block up), almost get run over twice (yes, you read that right ...in the same intersection). First one turning left from the second lane to the fourth lane, I hit the brakes so hard the back end bounces up, the left peddle scrapes my shin on the way back down, & the front wheel jack-knifes to the right. Damn good thing as the driver missed me by less than six inches, then he brakes & waves at me out of his sun-roof. I start peddling & a woman in a mini van turns left from the inside lane & almost hits my rear tire in the third lane. I didn't stop but I did yell at her " WHAT THE FIRST ONE DIDN'T KILL ME, NOW YOU WANNA TAKE A TURN, WHAT'S THE F****** MATTER WITH YOU?

I purposely ride on the side walks because obviously even just crossing the road to get to the other sidewalk is dangerous to ones health.

That was on a designated bike path.

IF DRIVERS CAN'T SEE/USE THEIR LEFT EYES......STAY OFF THE ROAD. JUST BECAUSE THE LIGHT TURNS GREEN AND NO CARS ARE COMING TOWARDS YOU, THAT DOES NOT MEAN YOU CAN "PIN IT" & TURN LEFT.

I can only imagine the horror in the eyes of the other drivers who witnessed the near tragedy.

I know a few people who've had some minor accidents. I also know a guy who was in a crash on the interstate and is basically a vegetable now. It's essentially like he's in a permanent coma...
That's enough to make me never want to be on a motorcycle.
I also have a friend who is really into mountain biking and he broke his back a few years ago. I'm surprised he can walk and is still riding...

The only crash I've had is when I was rear-ended on the interstate a week before I moved to Korea... somehow I was cited. Due to my lack of time left in the States I just paid the citation and went on my way. The cop who I talked with when I paid my citation told me I was stupid for not fighting it and rolled his eyes when I told him who the officer was. haha

well i dont wanna say that the danger part of riding makes it fun, because it doesnt.. yea its fun not to be surrounded or protected by anything, but in normal situations it not dangerous .   being on a bike is generaly safe. its unsafe drivers/riders that make it dangerous.. dont let others ruin the fun for you..

Glad you are ok!

I remember once my father in law came limping through the front door moaning. He asked me to look at his leg. It was horrible, he had a huge gash in his ankle, I could see bone and and it was bleeding horribly. Turns out he had hit a dog. He lost a shoe, but from the look of his ankle, he could have lost his foot. *barf*.

honestly, when i'm riding i don't think about concepts like "fault" and "right-of-way"; it's all my responsibility.  when i'm in my car, i own my lane, and if someone drifts out of the left lane while making a left turn, they'd better hope it's not me in the right lane.  but on a bike, i'm always on the defensive.  i wasn't at first.  when i first started riding, i didn't have a car, and bikes were my sole transportation for about three years.  then one day i was driving my mom's car on the highway, and i watched a bike come up behind me, pull out to pass, and disappear in my blind spot for--like--four minutes.  it changed the way i ride and the way i drive (ie: when i pass, i do it fast, and i don't pull out until i have a clear shot).

lol I dont think about who goes first or whatever.. all i care about is not gettin hit.. i was the same way.. for like 2 years motorcycle was my only way of gettin around

Did someone say motorcycle????  Boy do I have a story!

pg... you knew I'd appear eventually... HAHAHAHA!!

Anyway... about 3 years ago, I'd just barely learned to ride and we were on a nice Sunday ride.  I had literally had my bike for a month!  Crazy, lost, out of state lady is in front of me, obviously doesn't know where she's going.  And THEN.. she sees it!!  Slam on the brakes... and turn!

I'll admit... the accident was mostly the fault of my inexperience at that point... BUT!  I jammed brakes...bike went this way and that... and somehow, I thought I'd catch it with my right leg.  NOPE!!!  Pulled me off the bike, rolled me once, landed sitting on my butt and thought... wow, that wasn't bad, I'll just get up.

Fortunately, I decided to do a self evaluation first.  Spent 12 days in the hospital, two surgeries, 8 inch titanium plate and 14 stainless steel screws holding my leg together.  This was followed by nearly 6 months in a wheelchair.

To this day, my leg still swells up every day.  I can't run anywhere but on an elliptical machine.  You'd think I'd have given it up.  NOPE!!  I have a bigger bike... and I still LOVE IT!  And... I've lost 60 pounds.

Yeah, riding is dangerous, mostly because of the other drivers.  But it is a great way to spend a day!

Bleh.  I've got plenty of motorcylcle crash stories, but due to HIPAA I can't say diddly.  I can say that every time I just happen to have the trauma pager, I get at least three motorcycle crashes before my shift ends.

Years ago, a friend of mine and his girlfriend were on his bike... Just cruising.  This was the first time he had convinced her to go for a ride with him so he was taking it easy riding through the neighborhood.  Suddenly someone's dog bolted out in front of them.. They were only doing 25, but he just didn't have time to react.  He hit the dog, (and killed the poor thing) and the bike went out of control.  He ended up with a broken arm and his girlfriend, a broken leg.  The owners of the dog tried to sue him, but he eventually won.  It was their responsibility to keep the fur baby in their yard, it would have been the same the Judge said as if a car had hit it.  It was determined that he was only going 19 mph...

OP, I don't have a story but I am very pleased to read that you are OK.

Ok. Reading these has me a little freaked...should I invest in some chaps?  Got a helmet and leather jacket already, but I am always in jeans on the bike.

Glad you're only a little banged up, System.

Thank God that you are OK - at least not too badly injured!  It must have been horrible!  WE  have been lucky so far - only close calls.  Did the person stop?   Please continue to let us all know how you are doing.

Yea The person stopped, aton of people stopped but the driver that clipped me was lucky she was a lady (not being sexist) because when she got out and finally realized I was alive & ok she had the nerve to say "thats what happens when motorcycles are "flying" and try to pass a car thats changing lanes"  (or something like that)    I swear if she had been a guy, broken ankle or not I would have beat the **** out of them.

Sharpshoot- Definetly invest in a par of some kind of riding pants... leathers are best but they have alot of stuff out now that looks and feels like jeans but are reinforced for riding...  and depending on what kinda bike you ride (cruiser or sport) you can go with the different style

My leather jacket is alittle beat up now but still easily considered wear-able.. My pants and gloves took most of the damage.  ill try to post some pics up of my gear now if my camera cooperates

WHAT a *&@#%!!!!!   The accident was clearly her fault, and she says that is what happens?!  WOW... some people

my only crash was the fault of inexperience on my part. i was parked on an 85% incline and had to stop at the top to look for cars. i had only ridden a couple of times at this point and having a harley that weighs over 600lb on a steep incline is pretty scary. i gave her too much throttle and let go of the clutch too fast. thought this would stop me from rolling backwards. ended up flying forward too fast to keep her in control. went across the street and into some bushes. luckily the saddle bag was there and saved my ankle. i was more worried about my new bike then myself at that point. i got her up myself and got on her to ride her when i realized i could not pull in the clutch as i had broken a bone in my hand. so that ride was off. lucky for me i only scratched the windshield and the saddle bag is leather so it punched right back out and into place. has a few scratches. this summer jeff took me to a park and when i looked up, i was in the same situation. after my years of riding, i have learned a lot. he as a duel sport. so i said, "ride up to the top and tell me when the coast is clear because i am NOT stopping!" i made it up like a champWink

jeff was hit at approaching a traffic light. he in the left lane. the guy in the right lane decided he wanted in the left turn lane at the last second and pulled over in front of jeff. he tried to throttle out of it but could not. he had the nastiest bruise on his thigh. he scrapped his bike a little too. he said i should have seen the guys suv. his handle bar put a 1 inch gash all the way down the side of it. what floored him the most is when the guy said, "omg man i am so sorry. i worked a double shift and am so tired. i ride a bike myself and i feel soooo bad." jeff didn't report it to his insurance. just let the guy go.

we wear all our gear all the time
