Movie Discussion: Marley and Me

Quote  |  Reply

Well I noticed that movies never really get a whole lot of talk time in the lounge, so I figured I would try to start something up.

As for Marley and Me, I am not really a fan of Owen Wilson movies or tear-jerkers for that matter.  But I gave this movie the benefit of the doubt, from the good reviews it got.  And quit surprisingly I thought it was actually really good.  In fact I haven't run into one person that hasn't liked this movie.

It wasn't really a comedy or a drama movie, it was more like a dramedy...  One of those movies, that didn't focus entirely on being humorous but not too serious at the same time.  The movie I thought was a lot like life, it showed both the good times and the bad that we all encounter as human beings at one point or another.

I don't know, what did you guys think?

I totally agree with you! This movie was so good, I cried like a baby. haha, but your word "dramedy" totally fits it

My wife and I really enjoyed Marley and Me also.  We really liked that a lot of the stuff in the movie seems like they tore it right out of our lives.  In fact, I think that's the appeal of the movie is that there are so many parts of it that viewers can relate to.  I also liked that the movie seemed to just follow their lives as their family grows and not the usually movie type plot.

I agree with you kisteel, the movie probably did so well because it appealed to so many different people.  I remember how hard it was for our family to put down our first dog...  Not to mention the stresses that the main characters encountered with just raising a family and living.  I don't have a family, but I am sure that for those of you that do have family's, you probably experienced similar situations.

I didn't read any reviews before seeing it so I went in totally expecting a comedy... boy was that a rude awakening!  I enjoyed the movie but had no idea it would be so sad. I cried my eyes out.

The book was way better (also a big cry-fest for me). To me the book was more about the special and amazing qualities of the dog (and being an owner of a lab, also, I loved it of course), as well as the relationship the dog had with the family and the positive impacts the dog had on everyone. The movie focused more on the goofiness.

I still enjoyed the movie, don't get me wrong. Usually I prefer the books if there is both a book and a movie.

i read the book but haven't seen the movie yet. i literally laughed until i cried several times during the book, while riding the train on my way to work! people must have thought i was nuts! i'm dying to see the movie though.

what i don't get is people who say they won't read the book or see the movie because it has a sad ending. it's a true story, and last time i checked dogs don't live forever in real life....

seems a silly reason to miss out on such a great story.

I wasn't too interested in it when it came out, I just saw some commercials and looked cute but meh I wasn't running out to see it. My boyfriend and I got a puppy 2 months ago, so I've been a little more into dog stuff (but I've never been much of a dog person, I just love my own dog!)so we watched it last night. I cried so hard :[ all I could think about was how some day I'm going to lose my little baby and oh man I'm gettin sad just typing this! Hopefully I have 15 years before I have to worry about it.. the movie was cute. I loooooove the house they moved to out in the country! So gorgeous.

Overall though the movie was good, a lot better than I expected.

there is no part of me that wants to see a movie starring owen wilson, jennifer aniston, and a retriever.  nope.

Its true, the books are usually always better than the movies.  Mainly because no person can truely re-create the settings characters from a book to film.  The books description of events, settings and characters are very hard to mimic, which is why the book versions are usually better than the movie versions, in my humble opinion that is.

i haven't seen it but want to it looks very funny...

Thats what I thought too, like I said earlier owen wilson is not my favorite actor.  But its actually a pretty decent movie.

Agreed. Those two play the EXACT SAME CHARACTER in every movie they are in. They are not diverse at all.

I have never seen my husband cry during a movie before, but he cried during this one.  I can't judge though because I was bawling like a baby.  I had low expectations going in, but I ended up really enjoying it.

Haven't seen it, won't see it because I heard the dog dies in the end.  I refuse to see movies where the animal dies.  I blame it on emotional scarring from Old Yeller and Where the Red Fern Grows when I was young.

Unfortunately I think most movies or books featuring dogs end this way :(
