I'm going to see a movie tonight and am really craving movie popcorn!!!  If I'm craving it now, I'll never be able to resist it tonight.  I'm trying to leave myself enough calories, but am having trouble finding it to log it in.  Is it Oil popped?  I know it's evil stuff, but I don't know if I'll be able to turn it down.  Does anyone know how to log it?  Maybe some tips to avoid it?  Thanks in advance!

Wait! Popcorn isn't Evil! I swear it's not! :) Popcorn, in general, is a low-calorie snack :)

May I suggest you go and look for some healthier popcorn to sneak into the theatre, though, instead of the movie popcorn which tends to be oily and/or buttery? :) Or do you need the movie popcorn?
if you get it without the topping its **almost** ok... and get the small... about 300 cal... ill go look it up.

this shows AMC theatre small popcorn to be about 400 cal.  WITHOUT topping.... the kids size drops 100 cal.  and btw what a great site!

I think most movie popcorn is air popped, but I could be wrong.  What I do suggest is buying a SMALL.  Trust me, you may get a large and say to yourself that you wont eat it all...but you'll end up eating more whether you know it or not.  So buy a small.  How to measure it?  Maybe bring a 1 cup measuring cup with you, scoop it out, and then eat it out of that.  That way you know exactly what you eat.  Avoid putting any butter on it.  Also, a lot of theaters now have some decent flavors to put on your popcorn (not necessarily LOW in salt, but better than salt).  Try one of them for some flavor instead of the butter!!
I have the best tip ever for avoiding movie theater popcorn. Move far away from a movie theater. It's a 3 hour drive one way for me to get to the nearest theater. Actually... it kinda sucks!

When I lived in Seattle, I would go to the movie theater and see like 2-3 movies back to back. (And yes, I always paid admission, though at Pacific Place, it is really easy to cheat).

Now I have to wait for stuff on DVD and make my own popcorn. Try getting the popcorn without the extra butter. That might help. I would try this one:

And just estimate how many cups are in the SMALL size you get. =)
when you get to the theater do directly into the movie that you will be watching.  don't linger around outside where they sell it.  And just hang out in the theater.  If you get through the entire movie with out getting any than I am sure that when you leave you will not get some either.

Also, if you have to have something, maybe get a diet soda with lots of ice.  then you can crunch on that some.  just a few thoughts.

Make it a mini challenge for yourself and just see how strong the will power is.
Movie popcorn is always loaded with calories, even without the "buttery" topping.  I miss it, too. But I started smuggling in light, microwave popcorn in my bag - 400 cal for a small is way too high for me.

Sometimes I bring my own water, too. But every once in a while, I buy a diet coke and some fruit snacks* to quell the guilt.

LOL ix you're too funny!

dcgirl - you are evil, now I feel as though someone dared me to go and not eat popcorn.  I have almost as much problems with dares as I do with movie popcorn.

Oh man, now I checked out the site for AMC theaters, and in a small   there is 27 grams of fat.  Oh My!

Maybe if I reward myself when I get home I will be able to make it through the night.  It'll depend on what the hubby decides.  I don't know if I can sit beside him while he eats it!?!

Have I mentioned that I love this site??  You guys are awesome.
Well I just got back from the movie and I DIDN"T EAT POPCORN!!  Not only that, but my husband stopped for a milkshake on the way home and I didn't get any!!!  Turns out being stuborn works for me sometimes too.

Thanks for the advice and the challenge!!!
Way to go!! Great!
teehee.. this reminds me of an ellen degenerous skit.. where shes joking about the amount of food we tend to bring into the theatre with us..

like shes saying do you have a pack mule or anything? and the way she impresonating the way we shove popcorn into our mouths as we are concealed in the darkness.. great i tell you great
Has anybody else tried the mini bags of smart pop kettle corn?  It's so good.
I like the Pop Secret 100 Calorie bags. They have regular butter and Kettle Corn, and they are pretty good. I have 1 almost everday for lunch!

Okay MOVIE POPCORN IS EVIL!

you won't believe how many calories it has before you actually add the butter, my mom told me and I almost died! I thought it was air popped, but apparently not!

SOOO what I do.. take a large purse and bring my own.. it's dark and noone has EVER said anything to me. Last time I bought a bag of grapes instead, and ate them like popcorn. Still calories, but a hell of a lot better for you than the movie popcorn, and I love them.. you need snacks at the movies!

I've had friends who worked at the theatre and they actually told me there isnt any rule against people bring in their own food.

PS At home air popped pop corn is a good snack, low cal!
way to go deb!
I have the same problem with baseball games and hot dogs. Normally I detest them, but they are just too good there...
Ok I'm going to give you the best solution!!
make popcorn at home, and put Braggs amino acids on it with some brewers yeast. It is THE BEST popcorn (well if you add butter it's better but that's just true for everything- it's still awesome without the butter) Then sneak the popcorn into the theater and you will be way happier than if you spent all the $$ on yucky bad for you movie popcorn.
munch on dry cereal insted, I like honey nut cheerios

if you need salt, pretzels are good too.
