Movie theater munchies???

Quote  |  Reply

I know movie theater popcorn/candy is a bad idea, so I'd like to pack my own munchies. That way I can control portions/calories and stay on track. My question is...

What kind of munchies do you pack for the movie theater? A mix of salty and sweet perhaps? Really, any suggestions would be appreciated!!

Tongue out

Hi Kata,

What i think is the best is the Quakers mini snack in Caramel. I think 7 of them is only like 60 cal or something like that. They are sooo good but be careful cuz they are addictive...(well for me since I have a sweet tooth and luvvvvvv caramel...lol). They are my perfect snack.

Also something I found good was Smartfood white chedder popcorn. If you buy a bag in bulk (Walmart, not sure where else) I found the individual bags inside are actually less and smaller in size than a regular individual bag at a corner store or deli. It is good cuz its already portioned out...i believe a bag is 100 cal.

Another good one is strawberry licorice or a low fat gummy snack....of course in the mini packs.

And I also found that red apples are the best for a real "im so hungry I can eat a horse" syndrome when you don't want to have a meal yet. It is filling. I also read that if you are feeling really hungry eat an apple before you eat a meal. You will feel full and prone to eating less of what is in front of you. IT WORKS!!!!!!. Usually if I don't eat and am feeling really hungry, I tend to overeat when I do so I have an apple. A couple of bites in, I feel like im going to pop...lol.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you need anything

Good luck!

ugh, i personally can't stand eating during the movies.

eating + sitting for 2 hours isn't appealing to me.

i just chew gum.

Smelling the buttery popcorn and listening to people munch sometimes becomes overwhelming.  I'd rather have some healthier snack alternative on-hand to avoid the concession stand ;).  Thanks for the tips, Reddy!

I make my own trail mix. Once I made really good trail mix for my boyfriend and I, it was:

Ingredients 1/3 cup craisins 1/4 cup special k 3/4 oz mixed nuts 2 tbsp chocolate chips

Split into two little baggies it was about 205 calories per serving. Plus some nutritional value and the sweet/salty craving satisfied. I also have this thing where when I'm with a group of people eating candy bars I don't feel satisfied eating like...rice cakes, I need to have something slightly sweet or "bad" seeming.

Oooh!  Trail mix is another great idea!  Munchable, portable, and you can vary it.  Thanks for the idea!

I sneak in my own air-popped popcorn (that way I don't feel left outLaughing). I use Orville Redenbacher 94% fat free butter. It's only 15 cals per cup and pretty filling.

Kettle corn 100 calorie packs!

Both sweet AND salty.

We went to the movies the other weekend and I brought an apple, cut up into small bite size pieces, a bag of fat free pretzels, a bag of fat free fruit snacks, a bag of fat free popcorn ,that I popped at home and then put in a ziploc bag, and a bag of peanuts.  Needless to say that I didn't eat it all and I shared it with my kids, but I had "stuff" and I didn't feel guilty.  I also had a big purse!

All great ideas!  Thanks!

Question though, how well does home-popped popcorn travel in a ziplock?  Does it get soggy or anything?

I popped it just before I left the house and it was just fine.  I was afraid it would be soggy but it wasn't.  I did put it in an extra large bag instead of a small one so there was plenty of room for the steam and so it didn't get squished.  Also, my drive to the movie theater wasn't that far.  I really enjoyed it, because last time I went with my family I didn't bring anything and just had a bottle of water, (I can't have caffeine), and the smell of the buttered popcorn was driving me crazy.

Great ideas, I usually alott for the calories and bring a small candy and sneak in a coke zero.

Sometimes I really want that unhealthy stuff, go for the kids pack, it's portions are smaller so you don't do much damage.
