So, each Sunday my friends and I get together and watch a movie and have a good time. Although, I'm finding it difficult to keep from eating all the junk that gets passed around. Cookies, candy, etc. So I need some good movie time snacks that won't be junk but also won't make me look like the crazy guy in the back eating celery while we watch a movie.
Any suggestions?
What I've got so far is pretty simple:
Trail mix
raisins
And what about popcorn?
Popcorn is GREAT! High fibre and low cal IF you make it yoursef (in a popper or microwave) with no butter. If you have butter spray, add that at the end, or add cinnamon or chilli for flavour. Trail mix and raisins arent so good as they are SUPER calorific and can easily down 500 cal in a bowl. Try a fruit plate, with mango strawberries, banana, grapes or if that's lame, try freezing up fruit into sorbet (theres a recipe on here) and having dessert rather than snacks. Or make your own dip with cottage cheese and a bit of french onion soup mix in a blender - tastes just like french onion dip. Make a plate with a mix of snacks, just dont touch the unhealthy ones. I also have cereal sometimes - like sweet chips. Also try sugar free jello (super low cal - 40 cal for 500ml!!) or making a cottage cheese cheesecake like on the recipes here.
If you ave a little of everything, it wont be so bad. So I;d find a low cal cookie (italian sponge finger biscuts are pretty big for 30 cal),
My last tip is sugar and fat free hot chocolate. All you need is the scahet and boiling water.
Are you going to a movie theater? Or just someone's house? Either way, bring your own snacks - it's worth it. I pop a mini bag of All-Natural Smart Pop from Orville Redenbacher's, and it's only 100 calories. And yes, raisins and trail mix are good, but they can be high-cal.
Funny about the celery. Its hard for guys I am sure with friends if watching diet. My guy friends eat a lot of junk and I can't imagine one sipping a cup of hot chocolate.Though I like that idea. Anyhow popcorn is good, some candy is ok and can take awhile to eat that is the key like dots and licorice. Do you bake cause you could make some healthier cookies and not tell them.Or how about rice krispie treats there not that bad. How about pretzels or baked potato chips?
I'm a huge movie snacker..it's half the reason I go to movies. If you're at the theatre, you can always get your popcorn without the "butter topping" added. It's already popped with oil, which gives it enough flavour as is (also kind of makes a dent in the calorie bank though, so watch how much you have). I usually get that and a diet coke, and I'm pretty happy. Also there's yogen fruz..the no fat no sugar added vanilla yogurt (before fruit added) is only 100 cal. And I couldn't tell it wasn't the regular stuff (still only clocking in at 130 cal).
Now if you're talking about at home..well, I can see how guys would get made fun of for eating "girlie" diet foods. I'd skip dinner, and have stuff like turkey pepperoni sticks (the kind I buy is only 50 cal and I would never have guessed they were turkey), baked pita chips, veggies and hummus, light beer. Or maybe I'd just invite a bunch of girls over instead ;)
I buy 94% fat free Act II popcorn. They sell it in regular and mini sized bags, the mini bags are filling and are only 100 calories. I also found some Act II kettle corn that is amazingly low in fat and calories. If you want ice cream, there's a brand called Skinny Cow that's pretty good. They make ice cream sandwiches and ice cream bars.
As a rule in my household we always have a nice dinner before going out to the movies. In our area they check our baggage and our coats to make sure we are not smuggling our own snacks from home with us to the theatre with that said im not paying for a bunch of overpriced horrible food items just so I can munch and crunch for a couple of hours. We wont starve during that time and I have found we pay more attention to the actual movie more so than the consumption of the junkfood.
If this is at home movie those are GREAT because you can eat anything your lil heart desires if you want to snack on fresh veggies with some dressing anything goes.
How awful that they frisk you on your way into the movies! That's BS. I always take a drink and suckers, candy, whatever in my purse. Actually popping popcorn and "pursing" it seems a little extreme to me. But as far as drinks or candy goes why would you NOT take them in?
If someone frisked me I'd be like, "Dude, I'm out. Give me my money back for my ticket."
:)
Choco, it does royally suck the big one but we have learned to deal with it. I gues in a sense my family is healthier because of it haha
I've taken my own drink and chocolate bar (partly cos of cost-partly cos you don't get normal sized chocolate bars there-only huge bags of stuff) but I've never taken my own popcorn though this year my flat in Oxford is literally 20 seconds walk to the cinema so I have considered it, just haven't been yet.
