There's lots of healthy food in Germany!  True, there's a well-earned reputation for sausage and beer consumption... but they also consume quite a large quantity of fruit per head.  My suggestion would be to seek out the supermarkets and street markets, fill your basket with healthy wholesome foods like fruit, vegetables, black bread and lean ham and try to make as much of your own food for yourself rather than relying too much on cafeterias and restaurants.

I have lived in the Czech republic for 4 years. they have very similar food tastes to germany and really it is very hard.  I am veg so that really helps with limiting my choices and alowing to make more healthy choices. it really depends what city you will live in. lots of germans are real "green" which means that you will find health food shops, but eating out can be very hard. outside of prague I have almost no choices. besides a salad,  and maybe a potato soup. and always some oily cheese, sounds gross but i actually like it.   really just use your best judgement and learn to say in german things like, dressing on the side and no cheese. and if you drink beer, be aware its a total culture thing if i go out with my friends and dont drink i feel like i am 15 again with everyone like come on peer presure. good luck.

I lived in Frankfurt for 5 years! try the whole grain brown breads from the bakery, they taste really great and fill you up fast with all the fiber. Finding fresh whole wheat bread is so easy there. Eating out isn't the greatest when it comes to fresh veggies, i'm veg and its sometimes really hard to find stuff that isn't slathered in meat. I would shop at supermarkets, lots of fruit and veggies there. Try the yogurt, its the best i have ever had. put some muesli in and its a really good breakfast or snack. The also have really good dried fruit bars. Germans also love their health food stores. there is one in every town for sure.

Hi!

Wow Germany is great! Which city and University? What are you studying?

I live in Basle- just on the border - Switzerland- Germany-France. And go shop in Germany a lot! You can get plenty of healthy foods- everything from lean meats, to veggies and fruits, wholegrains, various breads... whatever!

Well like every country Germany has too sides- it offers a huge variety of fatty and non healthy traditional cuisine. Portions are also massively big in Restaurants... However...

There are great supermarkets with a huge variety of healthy "normal" food and naturally grown produce (Bio - means Natural- not genetically modified no pesticides etc)
Hieber or Marktkauf are very good supermarkets. Stay away from Aldi - they are cheap, but the quality is bad and most of the food offered is quite unhealthy.

Fabulous bakeries, and healthfood stores can be found everywhere... I'm sure you'll do just fine.
If you are looking for a specific product and can't find it- PM me and I'll help you. SOmetimes it can be hard to locate certain things it you don't know:-)

Have a great time!

I've been in Germany about 2 years now.  PM me if you have any specific questions.  I don't have time to give a good response immediately.

Jenn
