Let us Get Moving (any type of activity/exercise)
This thread has been created for those who want to post their activity (any type of movement).
Encouragement and accountability is here to help you on your healthy journey.
Reason: "sticky" post
After this morning's weigh-in of being up to 485.0 I just wanted to crawl into bed and pull the covers over my head. I am so tired. I am not getting anywhere and my feet are real swollen again. I am so ashamed - on a roller coaster ride or merry-go-round and I can't stop.
Andy came in just about a half hour ago and said "very carefully" (of course my emotions are running very high!) do you want to walk? DO I WANT TO WALK???? NO!!!! ... but I put on my walking clothes and tennis shoes. We only did 10 houses today ... the weather was lovely but since I have not had any movement since last Wednesday with walking I did not want to push it with PT coming tomorrow. What I want to do is run ... leap ... dance ... but my body is just not allowing me to do so. I also stood at the sink and did the breakfast dishes. Any movement is better than none! Trying to drink a lot of water today as well
NJ, I'm sorry you are so discouraged. The weight gain is more than likely water weight - and can go away as quickly as it came on. Good for you for not letting it stop you and walking any way. Drink your water (lots of it), and then take you rest brakes and lay on your left side (if possible - it gives your heart a rest) and elevate your feet above your heart. I like to lay there until my bladder fills. And I repeat until most of the water is drained. I can hold 10+ lbs in my legs very easily!
Keep running and dancing in your mind!! You will get there!
I went to Zumba again last night and found I'm doing more and more of the steps and body movements, where I couldn't at first. I'm still not even half way there, but I modify most steps where I don't stick out (and it looks like I'm doing what they're doing.)
Lorraine Zumba sounds like so much fun! Glad you have found something that helps you move.
Yesterday, it was an emotional day for me. I was apprehensive of the doctor's visit ... I always get like that because he just feels all my problems will go away if I would have the gastric bypass surgery and get the weight off. I am just so tired of everything - weight gain, my food menu, Andy's shopping (he saves money but does not check labels for salt content), the stress of not working so I could help my husband out with finances (he will be 64 in January), paying bills, my son's education, being there for his graduation, this H1N1 virus, etc. When Chrs (PT) came she asked how I was and I just started crying.
What I am leading to is I did my inside exercises. Laying down I did 3 different kinds of exercises (10x), sitting I did 4 leg exercises and 7 arm exercises (10x), standing with the walker I did 4 exercises (10x).
My feet were again real puffy and my blood pressure was slightly elevated.
The weather was cooler and just felt nice to be outside. As we began the walk I told Chris I could only do 8 houses. She said OK lets turn around at the white fence. I came to the white fence ... and pushed myself to another house, and continued until I had made it around the block of 22 houses.
My pulse went up to 138 and my oxygen was 96%. After 2 minutes my pulse had come down to 114 with oxygen at 98%.
I am glad I kept on moving!
I have added a stationary bike to my options for daily movement.
The doctor said it would help rehab my knee and help with weight loss.
My hubby doesnt believe in purchasing exercise equipment. But bless his heart, he bought me one....a recumbent bike cause my knee cant handle the motion of a regular type bike (yet).
I have been using it for about a month....15-20 minutes a day and am at level 3 on a couple of the programs I've tried. My knee is improving cause the pain has noticeably decreased. I burn off approx. 190-220 calories in that 15 minutes.
Another benefit of the bike, is that it has been helping my depression. I had stopped taking the St. Johns Wort and was doing ok (until Mom passed away recently). I didn't use the bike for a couple weeks (cause we drove to AZ to be with her) and I noticed a considerable decline depression wise. BUT I'm am back at it daily, 4 days now, and feel things starting to shift a bit towards the better.
The bike has been a blessing to have cause between my knee and the extra weight I carry, I couldn't go for walks. My hope is to rehab my knee & get enough weight off my joints so I can get back to doing the walks Ive grown to love. (we have a favorite lake we walk our 2 dogs around that is beautiful & exactly one mile).
summary: Benefits of using the bike are knee function improvement, decreased pain, mental improvement, and helps with weight by burning calories.
After I ate my oatmeal - Andy and I took a walk. We went in a completely different direction. We walked towards the exit of the Mobile Home complex. It has a slight upgrade in places. We walked down 6 homes towards the bus stop. We sat at the bus stop for about 10 minutes enjying the lovely weather and scenery. Andy said behind us was parking and another slight incline up to the "walking" path. He reminded me that three homes from where we live in the other direction is a cement path leading to the "walking" path (almost like going around a block). He said that could be another goal for me. When I got up - I said lets just try going up the incline to the top of the path. Slowly I made my way ... instead of saying NO I CAN'T ... the words are YES I WILL! We made it to the top and very slowly he guided me down and we walked back home. I have now walked three days in a row. Tomorrow PT will be here - wonder which direction I will go?
You'll be showing her some new things - won't you? I'm so glad you have such a wonderful husband who is there walking with you and showing you new things! I am praising the Lord for Andy and for your "I WILL" attitude!!
I did my inside exercises. Laying down I did 3 different kinds of exercises (10x), sitting I did 4 leg exercises and 7 arm exercises (10x), standing with the walker I did 4 exercises (10x) and partial squats at the sink (10x).
The weather was warmer by the time we started walking. I decided to show PT the route Andy and I walked the day before. This time I walked the 6 homes to the bus stop without resting once. It was just a slow easy pace. We sat there for about 5 minutes and then I went towards the ramp to the path. We did not go up because Andy was not with us and Chris is 1/3 my size. So we just circled the area and headed home - not stopping until I came into the house. It really felt good.
The gardener was out and the fresh grass smell was a delight to my senses. This weekend Andy has a surprise for me.cooler and just felt nice to be outside. As we began the walk I told Chris I could only do 8 houses. She said OK lets turn around at the white fence. I came to the white fence ... and pushed myself to another house, and continued until I had made it around the block of 22 houses.
My pulse went up to 133 and my oxygen was 96%. After 2 minutes my pulse had come down to 107 with oxygen at 98%.
After reading frogger50 (Lou's) post about the bike - I purchased a pedal exerciser pedal which I can use with my feet or my hands for upper and lower training. Cannot wait for it to arrive! Now I will have something to do when I sit and watch TV.
Which direction should I try today? Andy and I took a walk past the four homes to the stop sign. We proceeded to walk towards the incline to the path but it was much steeper than the other one we tried the other day. We then very slowly walked behind the homes in the "greenbelt". I walked part of the way bracing myself with the chain link fence trying to stand upright and not use the walker. My back got very tired and I had to pause several times. We came in our back gate. The walk was short compared tot he day before but at least I did something this morning making it 5 days.
I did my inside exercises. Laying down I did 3 different kinds of exercises (10x), sitting I did 4 leg exercises and 7 arm exercises (10x), and I used the pedal exerciser - only 5 rotations with my feet. I really felt it!
It was a nice and steady walk this morning with PT. We took another different route and I even found a dollar in the street! It really felt good. Because I had not walked since Saturday I did not push myself too much but tomorrow is another day.
I even cooked a snack for my son - smokey links with BBQ sauce. I did a load of laundry and of course my dish washing at least twice a day standing at the sink.
My pulse went up to 129 and my oxygen was 95%. After 2 minutes my pulse had come down to 102 with oxygen at 97%.
My exercise with PT is going OK ... I could be pushing myself a little more but to be honest I am afraid ... yesterday we did the normal inside exercises and headed out to walk ... I only went half the distance because my back was starting to ache ... when we came back I put a cold pack on ... the good thing was that PT noticed in my standing leg exercises I was going higher then what I was doing before ... so that is an improvement!
The weekend is here and I didn't get my walking in this morning but I have been up doing dishes and vacuumed my little area in the bedroom.
My hubby & I (and our 2 dogs) walked around the lake today.
It is a 1 mile walk. I had to sit for a couple minutes 2 times cause of my knee. It felt like it might pop out. BUT it didn't and I made it around the lake with no pain. I haven't done this in a long time let alone pain free. It felt so good to be outside walking, see the ducks again, other people and their dogs....too cool.
Our dogs were so happy. They need to brush up on their manners. They are (or were) so well behaved. Im sure it will come right back to them in no time. We have a 8 yr old Collie and a 10 yr. old Basset Hound...quite a funny pair walking side by side.
The exercise bike is paying off. I do 15 minutes, once or twice a day.
I will continue the 1 mile walk once a week until I'm sure there is no repercussions. Then I plan on increasing it to a couple times a week.
Praise be to God (and thanks) !
Lou
It is another beautiful day here in Southern California. The Fall leaves are in all their glory and there is a slight wind.
I did my inside exercises. Laying down I have increased to 4 different kinds of exercises (10x), sitting I did 4 leg exercises and 7 arm exercises (10x), standing with the walker I have increased to 5 exercises (10x) and partial squats at the sink (10x). I have now begun to incorporate the pedal pusher. On Friday I could only do 5 rotations - today I did 20 forward and backward!
We tried to go and walk but it was a little too strong for me to attempt with all kinds of things blowing around besides the leaves. PT and I proceeded to spend a little more time on the pedal pusher - I did an additional 20 rotations front and back with my feet and then for 2 minutes I did my arms.
Greetings from "windy" Southern California. PT was cancelled today but Andy dragged me outside to walk. We actually went up the steep incline and walked the path behind our home! Huffing and puffing (but not blowing the houses down) I made it - I stopped at the bus stop for a 3 minute rest. Some people came to get on the bus and I felt uncomfortable - I just wanted to get back to my house and "hide". I have to accept yes, I am huge, and get over what people think. I am getting out there and moving ... something I have not done in such a long time.
I did my inside exercises. Laying down I did 4 different kinds of exercises (10x), sitting I did 4 leg exercises and 7 arm exercises (10x), I pedal pushed with my arms for 4 minutes and only could do 10 rotations with my feet forward and back. My knee and back pain have been around an 8.5 since Thanksgiving Sunday. I went out and walked 8 houses until my back started pinching and felt I better return home - so a total of 16 houses.
My pulse went up to 124 and my oxygen was 95%. After 2 minutes my pulse had come down to 99 with oxygen at 96%.
I did my inside exercises. Laying down I did 4 different kinds of exercises (10x), sitting I did 4 leg exercises and 7 arm exercises (10x), I pedal pushed with my arms for 7 minutes and only could do 5 rotations with my feet forward. My left knee and back pain has come down to 7.5. It is cold here so I only did 4 laps inside the house with the aid of the walker. It was a steady but notable a little faster then my outside walking pace.
My pulse went up to 119 and my oxygen was 94%. After 2 minutes my pulse had come down to 99 with oxygen at 96%.
Early this morning I managed to get up and go down the stairs to get the newspaper for my husband at the end of the carport before he came home from work. It was 48 degrees - that is cold for southern California. I crawled back into bed.
Yesterday, I did do the pedal pusher for my arms 10 minutes. I did not do much more movement than this because it was cold and my joints/muscles were really aching - rain is a coming!
Monday and it is raining - so I was unable to do any outside walking.
I did first thing this morning walk out to the end of the carport to get the newspaper before my husband came home from work. I even prepared a casserole so there was something warm for him to eat. The house smelled so good. It's hard to believe its been over 2 years since I did any kind of cooking. My energy level is slowly coming back and the pain - what a world of difference form a year ago!
I did my inside exercises. I increased the rotation of the pedal pusher with my feet to 30 rotations front and back. Kept telling myself I can and will do this. I then did the pedal pusher 5 minutes with my arms. Then I repeated with my feet and then another 5 minutes with my arms.
Wednesday morning I woke up so tired - could not sleep all night. My eyelids were so tired and I did not feel well. Andy wanted to cancel PT and I said no - I need to push and do as much as I could otherwise I know I would have not done it by myself.
Laying down I did my four positions (10x), sitting I did 4 leg exercises and 7 arm exercises (10x), standing with the walker I only did 3 out of the 5 exercises. I did do the pedal pusher for 10 minutes with my hands. I increased my feet rotation to 40 front and back without stopping. I did not do my walking but went back to bed to rest.
Norma Jean,
I am so glad to hear that you pushed yourself to do the exercises. You will reap the benefits of what you sow. God bless you and continue on. The word of God and the title of this room I can do all things through Christ, that strengthens me.
God feeds the birds but doesn't throw the food into the nest. They have to do thier part to get fed, which means leaving the nest.
God gives us the strength but we have to move.
God bless you
Mark
