where do you get your mp3s?

Quote  |  Reply
I finally got an mp3 player - a Creative MuVo to be exact - and I've been ripping CDs onto it for running.  I love it!  Now I just have to decide where to download music from because I'm in desperate need for some new music.  I'm not a techie really, so I need something really simple.  I understand that it's typically 99 cents a song, but I just want to go to the best and safest place to do it.

Thanks for any input as always.

legally? iTunes is just fine.  I like their visualization options, too.

Comcast sponsors/has a relationship with a service called Rhapsody, and that's where I get my music (since they gave me a free scrip for signing up) and it lets you listen to music for free, and then download what you like for a fee.  very good, quite safe.
Yes, legally please.  I'm a musician, so I respect the hard work that goes into creating music and am willing to pay for it.

I was looking at iTunes, and it looked like it was only for iPods.  I'm sure I was wrong, because again, I'm not into the tech stuff.  I've also heard of Rhapsody.  Thanks.

Anyone else have a recommendation?
Walmart now has online music store too.

I personally hate Itunes selection.  I can never find artists I want and sometimes they are very tricky in you are thinking you are buying one artist and it turns out to be a totally different person doing their songs.  Kate Bush for example.  They have no songs of hers.  My husband said he has yet to find an AC/ DC song on I tunes too.  He also says he has every song from I tunes that he wants now.  We are not into new music so the selections for us old folks is limited.

I tend to buy from Amazon an album - usually a greatest hits for artists and then download those to my ipod this way should my Ipod break I still have the CD.  I also sometimes like to play em on my home stereo.  I also have an "XM To Go" radio that allows me to record up to 5 hours of stuff from XM radio so I use that more than my ipod so my tunes tend to change.  I find when I use my ipod I sometimes get bored with the same old tunes.  With the XM to Go I can have new music all the time.  XM also has a thing with Napster where you can buy tunes that you download to your radio.  I am not sure how that works.

Bravo on the downloading legally!  I respect you highly for that!

I get all my stuff from Itunes.  I don't really listen to anything other than Christian and a few oldies, so they have everything I need!
Yes, you do need an iPod to play music you purchase from the iTunes store. Unless you plan on carrying your computer around instead. :)

Actually, you could buy music on iTunes, burn a CD, then rip it to mp3 and put it on your MuVo, but that's more trouble than it's worth. It would make more sense for you to use an online store that works with the MuVo, but I don't know much about those "other" services.

About the selection on the iTunes store... I found 117 songs by Kate Bush. That's about 116 more than I knew existed. :)  AC/DC is not there because either they or their record company have chosen not to be. I don't think they are on any of the other downloadable music stores either.

In a lot of ways buying the CD makes more sense. Especially if you're into stuff that shows up in the bargain section. And, you have the disc as a backup in case something happens to your computer or iPod.
shavenyak - are you sure those are true Kate BUsh?  They must have added them in the last 3 months then, cuz the last time I searched I tunes all the supposed kate bush tunes were actually remakes / covers and not her records.
I use Rhapsody To Go. It's $14.95 a month and you get access to almost any song you can think of, and you can transfer as many as you like to your mp3 player. You can play them as long as you subscribe to the service, but you have to sync your player up with rhapsody once every couple weeks to keep the licences good. Not hard, just have to run rhapsody while your player is hooked up. You don't have to buy any songs, but you can if you want for $0.89 a piece, but you really don't need to buy them unless you plan to stop subscribing or want to burn them to a CD. You can get a 2 week free trial, too. Oh and you can listen to all the songs on your computer as well, without buying them. It's all included in the $14.95
before I had an Ipod I used puretracks.com -- its very safe and if you'd feel even safer, you can buy prepaid cards at Zellers and some music stores. The prepaid cards are like prepaid calling cards- so you don't even need to use a credit card in such cases.

Now I, too use Itunes (and Muzon for ukrainian music)

Well, it’s shocking and needed an immediate attention to sort out at the earliest.

Well, strictly speaking, you *don't* need an iPod to play stuff you get from the iTunes store, provided you download the DRM-free stuff and provided that your player can play AAC format (.mp4).  The files are on your hard disk, go get 'em.

You *do* need an iPod if you want to use iTunes synchronization, random shuffle, playlists, etc.

Most of my MP3s are ripped from my CD collection, and I bought most of those used.  I got a few from eMusic, but their selection sucks, so I cancelled my subscription.

I used to use Amazon all the time. They always had the music I wanted and most of their popular songs were $.89 each. I was just on there the other day and I see they are going the way of Itunes now...$.99 a song for the most part but some of the really popular ones are going up to $1.25 which I think is ridiculous. I am off to search for a (legal) place to download songs at $.89. I think I'll look at Rhapsody or Walmart now.

i love itunes.  i've never had a problem finding what i want, including local bands with very limited exposure.  i like that you usually get the liner notes (even though i rarely look at them).

and if you're willing to wait a few weeks (depending on popularity), the price of new albums drops dramatically.

I'm a fan of Amazon, actually. Something about iTunes irks me, but that doesn't help anyone much

You hate iTunes because you have an irrational fear of Apple products.

It's not irrational! if God had intended us not to be able to right-click, he wouldn't have invented mice with 2 bottons!

I'm pretty sure she only invented the 4-legged mice, not the two- or one-buttoned mice.

My macbook doesn't have a mouse button - the entire touch pad IS the button.

Actually, you can just use a program to convert directly to mp3. And you can always download your purchases again for free from iTunes if you lose them.

I like iTunes because I like iPods, but I sure am in agreement about right clicking...
