MSG and Free glutamate

You can avoid it at restaurants by not eating at restaurants...lol. MSG can also be hidden under the generic headings of seasonings, flavouring, artificial flavour, spices etc. I rarely eat packaged foods, but I never buy anything without a specific list of ingredients.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with MSG. Seriously. Let me repeat: THERE IS NO BAD SIDE EFFECTS FROM CONSUMING MSG.
If you don't believe me, do to Goggle Scholar search for yourself: http://scholar.google.ca/scholar?hl=en&q= monosodium+glutamate
There was a double blind study where participants ate chinese food, then were surveyed for MSG-related effects. More people on the non-MSG side of the room claimed they had headaches, etc. than did the people who actually ate MSG.
It's a salt attached to a protein. Not bad for you. Infact, it's used to treat some brain disorders (see above link).
If you're not going to each something, at least have a good reason for it. As for me, I keep some MSG at home and sprinkle it over my food for that yummy unami flavour.
MSG isn't bad for you...SURE. As such to go so far to even say it's good for you is disgusting. There are plenty of studies which show that MSG has severe and negative side effects, however most people don't have severe reactions to it. BUT just because you don't have a severe reaction to eating it doesn't mean that it is not causing you harm. If you want to POISON yourself, go ahead but don't try to tell me it's okay. My post was for advice on how to AVOID MSG only, not to hear nonsense in favor of MSG. So why you felt the need to even comment, I don't know but you are clearly poorly informed and irrelevant to my post.

My response wasn't to you but it looks like you are the one who is misinformed with your webmd link....If you want to debate this topic, I'm not interested and once again...am interested in learning what I can do to avoid MSG. Please, continue poisoning yourself if you like. I couldn't care less what YOU do, but like I said before don't expect me or other people to follow your foolish path or tell someone they are misinformed on an issue that you are citing WebMd as a source for. The subject I posted IS NOT a debate, it is a request for WAYS TO AVOID MSG. If you don't have anything INTELLIGENT to say in regards to ways to avoid it, then you're replying to the wrong post. I suggest to you and any others who have such a problem with me not wanting to eat MSG to make your own post and debate it because that's NOT the subject here. Both your posts are unhelpful and ignorant.
"Both your posts are unhelpful and ignorant."
Yes, it is your thread and I shall edit my previous posts.
Best of luck in maintaining a healthy diet.
sarahcatherinejohnson - you are being very rude.
Best way? Read the labels and don't buy processed foods like those "just heat in microwave healthy dinners/lunches".
Restaurants - you either go ask/hope that it is not include, or you don't go. Again quite simple.
Relatives - I have same relatives. I learned to say no, it doesn't hurt their feelings as much as they like to show. Frankly I don't really care that I hurt their feelings because I don't want to stuff myself with whatever deep fried stuff they cooked up.

I am not interested in debating the safety in MSG either. I happen to be one of those people who has serious reactions to it and avoid it at all cost. What works for me...
Don't eat most fast food, processed food or canned soups. Specific, Taco Bell, KFC, Chinese unless no MSG. Most soup mixes, dressings, Ramen, flavored chips and dips, Stove Top or other stuffing mixes...basically eat real, clean food, fresh fruit, veggies, lean meats, whole grains and dairy...then it is easy.
To address your comment about it is easy to see on the ingredients...know that there are multiple names for MSG....which of course, I can not find the article that writes this all out for me....I will keep looking and post when I find it.
Good Luck.
MSG, Gelatin ,Calcium Caseinate, Monosodium glutamate ,Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP), Textured Protein, Monopotassium glutamate, Hydrolyzed Plant Protein (HPP) ,Yeast Extract Glutamate, Autolyzed Plant Protein Yeast food or nutrient, Glutamic Acid Sodium Caseinate, Autolyzed Yeast Vegetable Protein Extract, Senomyx (wheat extract labeled as artificial flavor)
Found some of them...look under hidden msg names and it also gives you things that contain free glutamate.
I too am very sensitive to MSG. When I look at packaged foods if it has too many ingredients to look at quickly I put it back. If it has something that I know isn't real food I put it back. I am still learning as I just found out about this like 5 weeks ago. It has helped me get rid of my migraines, twitches, dizziness and my vision doesn't get blurry. I know when I get ahold of something I am not supposed to have and I make note to not eat it again. It makes it easier to eat healthier as most things need to start at as whole foods.
I also carry around a little card in my wallet of all the names that babyvdog posted. It makes it easier to grocery shop and eat out at resturaunts.. you can show them the card and ask them. If they are not sure on something they are using they can bring out the container.
Hope this helped ^^"! best of luck!
MSG may or may not be bad for one's body...although everything has the potential to be detrimental in large quantities.
Some people are extra sensitive and some people are allergic to it, so they would do best to avoid it.
Isn't it ironic how something that supposedly has been proven harmless, can cause migraines, twitches, dizziness and blurry vision?...lol. When I read stuff like this it makes me ask myself, "if it can be this bad for someone like blewpicksy and lots of others, why would I want to eat this stuff myself?". Just because I am able to eat MSG and not be sick, because I used to eat it all the time and never had any side effects I know of, doesn't mean I should eat it..there's a big difference. Since I started eating healthy, unprocessed foods, my lifelong headahces disappeared too. Was it the MSG? I have no idea..but it was something in the food for sure...and not eating processed food eliminated that problem tout suite!!
I find it so annoying when people post just to put their two cents in....when their two cents doesn't even answer the original question of the post. As such I'll never post another topic in this forum or on this site because there are simply to many "know-it-alls" who troll around wanting to incite a petty arguement. Bleh. Thanks to those of you, johnnypenso, blewpicksy and the others who actually posted RELEVANT comments. As for the rest, get a life.
