Anyone hear of the magazine, "Well Being Journal"? It comes out 6x/year, and articles are written by naturopaths and m.d.'s about current health issues that are more under the radar, and not in mainstream media.

Just wanted to bring it to your attention, in case some of you didn't already know (I didn't), that almost all fake meat contains MSG, because the freed glutamic acid comes out in the processing of these products. Food processors can get away with classifying it as a different kind of "____ protein": pea protein, vegetable protein.... it can also be under "natural flavoring", etc.  MSG is also very very commonly found in tons of non-veg*n items as well, but I'm just pointing out what would be relevant to us.

MSG causes brain cells to become over excited, damaged, and then later to die and slough off, destroying brain function. MSG is believed to be a cause of Alzhiemers and Parkinson's. It also is addictive, sharpening the flavor of foods, it actually does make people addicted, possibly playing a huge role in the "obesity epidemic" along with aspartame.

So on top of that, I found out that my beloved TVP is basically just chewy MSG. This is so upsetting.... It's in most veggie burgers, fake meat strips, etc. Just wanted to point it out.

Apparently, ALL gelatin is also just MSG. We don't have to worry about that in this forum, obviously, but it's just interesting because a lot of vitamins and medications that are in gelatin caps are putting MSG into the body for people who don't even know it.

All my information was gotten from the March/April issue of Well Being Journal, in the article, "The Obesity Epidemic: are MSG and Aspartame Playing a Major Role?".

Also, here is an article that could be of interest with more information (this source was also actually cited in the WBJ article)

Oh wow... grrr I hate misnamers... Thanks for the heads up; I sure didn't know about MSG lurking so much in veg alternatives.
Fortunately, since going near vegan I've not had any desire to replace meat with fake meat.

This is still another reason not to.

Thanks
i'm not HUGE on fake meat, though i do consume it maybe 2-3 times a week.  it's a good thing i read this before i went to the supermarket tonight!  thanks for the heads up.  MSG is evil, evil, evil!

Oh wow. Thanks for the info. >.< Luckily, I eat fake meat maybe once a week, if that, although I did have some for dinner tonight. What really freaks me out is when you said "MSG causes brain cells to become over excited, damaged, and then later to die and slough off, destroying brain function." Scary.
