MSG, healthy or not?
does MSG cause memory loss? cause i been having my 8th or 10th packet of MSG (instant noodles MSG) this week and if it cause memory loss, i would have to find other thing to eat..and is there any big problem with it?
Original Post by lesleyss:Personally (as a female) I would not eat ANYTHING that contained soy, what with the high levels of estrogen in soy...
I sincerely hope there are no men out there that are consuming ANYTHING that contains soy... soybeans, soy sauce, flavor enhancers, yams.. and, oh, did I mention yams...?
3/4ths of the stuff at the grocery store contains soy.
MSG is a corn product
citikid:
While modern commercial MSG is made with 'starch' and corn is a starch, it is not specifically listed as 'corn' and is not strictly a 'corn product'
Modern commercial MSG is produced by fermentation of starch, sugar beets, sugar cane, or molasses.

A dietician once wisely told me - if a product has MSG in it then it is a junk product that has cheap ingredients in it. MSG is a flavour enhancer that makes something with little taste more intense. Chicken is very mild and will easily absorb many flavours and so often ready made foods with chicken in often have MSG to make the flavor stronger and more intense.
I wish they had Amoy Ready to Wok noodles here - they have them in the UK and they are great and so quick and easy. You stir fry your vegetables and /or meat and then add the noodles - two minutes later it is on your plate - sooo good.
I lost a fair amount of weight and felt much better for eating like that - noodles are great if put with other things.
Other foods can give you headaches - not just MSG - cheese, chocolate - all things to be avoided by migraine sufferers.
And as for the previous comment about how there is a lot of salt in homemade foods - only if you add it! I gave up adding salt when cooking vegetables a long time ago due to high blood pressure - no one in the family really noticed the difference. It is all a matter of taste. Cut down on your sodium intake for a few weeks and your taste buds will change - then when you eat bread and chips you will find that they taste very salty. We consume far too much sodium - I didn't realise just how much until I was put on a low sodium diet for a few weeks.
And lesleyss may find that as her estrogen levels decrease with age, she may want to eat foods made from soy - saves suffering with the miserable side effects of the menopause
I've been wondering about MSG, too, and I'm glad you started this conversation. I wrote a journal post about it a while ago, hoping to get a response, but there hasn't been any as of yet.
The research I did really worried me. I won't copy and paste my entry here, because it's long, but if you cared to read it, I would be interested to know what you think.
Anyway, I went ahead and eliminated any foods with MSG (and its colleagues) from my diet as an experiment. I was quite concerned about the additive, because of the link I saw in my binge behaviors. It's been almost three weeks now. I feel better. Regular food tastes better to me. I rarely feel bad after eating, and I am less compelled to binge. It is very noticeable.
I only have my personal experience to go on, because there is not scientific agreement about the ingredient's effects. There is a lively discussion and great deal of study, however, which suggests that others have had similar experiences.

have you tried the tofu noodles you can find in the dairy area.use your own spices.put low sodium spices together in a container, such as mrs.dash (many varietys)garlic powder, minced dried onion, parsley.heat up your water, drop the noodles, heat, add spice.whala..its really good. you can also find a large variety of dried noodles in the asian section that are not fried.add to water and the spice and there you go...try it..enjoy
tofu noodles?never heard off..but there's this brand that sells SoY noodles but it tastes weird..The package claims that there's no MSG but there still the powder packet thing..

anyway,i think i'm quite the opposite of you.. I used to be a binge eater but ever since i started eating Instant Noodles and some jellies, I stopped. Instant noodles and jellies feel me up more than bread and rice ..so far, i been having 8 packs of instand rice noodles(or is it tang hoon?) per week and i still haven't had any problems other than feeling totally uncomfortable later on but my friends said that was bloatness.. She said everytime I eat instant noodles, my stomach will bloat up causing the full feeling..And till now, I don't get many guilt attack anymore..
but I'm still not sure.. DOES MSG CAUSE MEMORY LOSS??

A lot of people say they are allergic to MSG and MSG is the devil and all this crazy stuff as it is IMPOSSIBLE to be allergic to MSG.
Go to any allergist and ask him to test you for a MSG allergy and he will laugh in your face. MSG is a SALT. If you where allergic to MSG that means you would be allergic to salt which means you would be dead since the body needs some salt to function.
If people have problems feeling bad when eating certain types of food it could be possibly an allergy to a different type of food or salt take in general but don't blame it on MSG as the scape goat.
Are you an allergist?

Check your facts, everyone...!
MSG (monosodium glutamate) is a by-product of the manufacture of soy sauce.
And, gee...! Soy sauce is made from... what...?
Personally (as a female) I would not eat ANYTHING that contained soy, what with the high levels of estrogen in soy...
I sincerely hope there are no men out there that are consuming ANYTHING that contains soy... soybeans, soy sauce, flavor enhancers, yams.. and, oh, did I mention yams...?
What is your problem with soy! It is good for you! I drink soy milk every day and have tofu every day!
