Multi Grain or Whole Wheat bread?

Quote  |  Reply
Hey all,

I was wondering the other day, is whole wheat bread better for you than multi grain?  The last time I was at the supermarket, I checked the nutrition info on the two different types from the same producer, and they seemed to have similar characteristics.  Why I'm wondering is, I like the taste of the multigrain better, but I figure that because of this, it must be less nutritious.  Is there any hard facts about this?  Is there be a way to analyze carbohydrates and fiber content of the particular products (I'm sure different producers can vary) as to tell which has the better "complex carbohydrates" that I keep hearing about?

Thanks,
Jesse

Hey Jesse,

I don't really know the details but I would look at the ingredients of your multi grain bread and see if it is made with whole grains.  If it is then you're in the clear!  If it isn't made with whole grains, then you have to worry about all those evils of processed flours and such....
Yeah it totally depends. Where I live there's white, multigrain and wholemeal. Upon close inspection the multigrain looks just like white with grains. THe whole meal you can see tiny bits of shells in it. I go the wholemeal because I think the brand we have might be white bread with multi grain.
I'd say the best thing to do is find a bread which is both - wholemeal with grains in it. I've found a few brands like this. Best of both worlds!
Either way, they've got more fibre than white bread.
I wonder about this too, specially because I end up buying everything whole wheat. I thought of multi grain just so that I'd have some variety. Unless of course, there is no problem with having every grain serving come from whole wheat. But I always hear you should have a variation so...
You might want to look for a bread that says "whole grain" on the label.  I buy a brand called Milton's (get it at Costco).  They have a multi-grain bread and a whole grain bread.  I go for the whole grain because of the fiber content and for the health of it.  I don't like to eat only whole wheat any more when there is something better available.  Whole grain wherever you can find it is the best.  I also buy a wrap that is whole wheat that I make into a great sandwich alternative that travels better than a sandwich.  Mmmm!  Good stuff and so good for you!

I don't know if you ever watch Oprah, but she does a series with a doctor named Dr. Oz.  He is a health and weight loss expert.  An audience member posed this question to him on the show and he said it doesn't matter.  Either is fine.  Just as long as its not white bread.  So I would go with whatever taste you prefer.  Compare the nutrition labels, I always go with whatever has more dietary fiber.  Hope this helps.
the ezekiel 5:19 bread is your best bet if you are that concerned about the bread you eat (like me!). it is flourless, makes it clear on the bag. is high in fiber and protein and reasonable with carbs, considering it is a whole grain sprouted bread. its so tasty too! with other brands, im not so sure, i usually dont eat too much bread and so haven't done much research.
