MUSHROOMS - love them, but ......

Hi all.

I am using lots of mushrooms in my recipes just now because I was under the impression that they were really low in cals for a large amount and they are really filling.

I just looked at my nutrition label on my pack of 250g mushrooms - it says per 100g = 160 cals! This would mean my packet (which I would use all of) is equal to 400 cals! It does say under this ' fried with a small knob of butter' but surely that doesn't add VAST amounts of cals?

I had a look at CCs info for mushrooms and it says per 70g = 15 cals which would mean my 250g mushrooms would = about 50 cals.

 

I would be cooking them without oil or fat.

Very confused, please help me with my mushroom dilema lol!

I think the knob of butter would add a lot of the calories.  Because mushrooms should not be that high calorie XD  I would go with CC's information.

1 level tablespoon of butter is around 100 Calories. It's really not that much...

Your package is adding a reasonable amount of calories for the butter. Go with CC's info for raw mushrooms, if you're cooking them without added calories. There is no way 250g of mushrooms by themselves have 160 calories, because our bodies simply can't glean that much usable energy from them via digestion - we lack the enzymes. They're still effing awesome though.

I love mushrooms too, and I like to use them for the same reason.

Go with fresh mushrooms from the store.  I just sautee mine in some cooking spray.

Mushrooms are about as low-calorie and diet-friendly as you can get ... IF you don't cook them in high-fat oil or butter.

I use I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Spray or chicken broth to saute things ... works wonders!

I buy fresh as well as canned mushrooms, mainly because I can't find fresh straw mushrooms around here all  the time, and I love them in soups!

Plus, new research is suggesting that certain compounds in mushrooms have a lot of anti-cancer activity in the human body.  Makes them even more awesome!

CC info is for RAW mushroom. Uncooked mushrooms with nothing added. Butter is REALLY high in calories, so any you'll add is going to be, as someone said above, 100 calories per tsp.

Deserves repeating - about as low-calorie and diet-friendly as you can get!

Ridiculously low calorie, delicious, versitile, delicious, filling and delicious. Raw, boiled, sauted in pam spray, cant get enough and Im currently visting Kennett Square PA which Im told is mushroom capital. At home, my mushroom tub said from this location.

Go with CC measurements which are backed up elsewhere on line since you arent cooking with butter or fat.

are your mushrooms dried mushrooms by any chance?  If so, then they could be high calorie because the water has been removed.  If raw, mushrooms are about 15 cal per 100 g.  Preeeetttty low calorie in my book!
