Mushrooms and thrush????????????????
I heard you should not eat too many mushrooms because it gives you thrush.
Does anyone know anything about this?? How many is too many??
I love mushrooms as they are low in calories and contain some good things.
Help!
You should only avoid mushrooms if you have a serious yeast infection, if I recall right. They generally do not cause it. Just enjoy your mushrooms in moderation like everything else.
Thrush can be made worse or more likely is if your diet is high in sugar, refined carbohydrates/starches, fermented foods (vinegar, alcohol) and products containing yeast (cheese, bread, Marmite etc.) One of the early warning signs of diabetes is that sugary urine leads to repeated attacks of thrush so, if that ever happens, do talk to your doctor.
Thanks for the update, I will continue to enjoy mushrooms.
I do not have any problems with thrush, definately not with sugar either as I prefer savory stuff, although I do like pickled onions, gerkins or red cabbage. I avoid cheese and bread because of the calories.
I have never had thrush but if I ever get ill, I'll definately seek the GP's help, its good to put these myths to rest once and for all.
You shouldn't avoid cheese or bread! Low-fat varieties of many cheeses are out there, remember, and bread is bread. If you are truly worried about calories in bread go for a good Danish loaf or a thinner cut (or bake some of your own and cut your own loaf!) Still, I'm glad this has helped you.
Mushrooms and thrush, I'll confess, was a new one on me! But I did once hear that bananas make you 'age prematurely'. You've gotta love 'em!!
I think mushrooms make yeast production worse during an infection but they never actually cause it. Bananas making you age prematurely? What?! XD
Seriously. Something about the sugar content although I expect the truth is more like someone looked at orangutans and thought, 'they're pretty wrinkly... they eat a lot of bananas...." Put two and two together..... dun, dun, duuunnnn!!!
Mind you, I've read the Atkins book and his logic made just as much sense...
Thrush is caused by a fungus called Candida albicans. This is a fungus which is already part of your normal flora, you don't get it from eating anything. The reason why you don't ALWAYS have thrush is because your bacterial normal flora and your immune system are good at keeping it in check. People don't usually get thrush unless they have some extent of immune deficiency. You may also be at higher risk of candidiasis if you take certain antibiotics which kill off your bacterial normal flora (but THAT infection doesn't happen in your mouth
)
I came across this post as I'm eating lunch.. (a small can of whole button mushrooms and some brown rice) lol
I LOVE mushrooms so was a little bit worried to read this thread while I was gorging on them :) Thank god it was ok lol
Wouldn't cooking, or canning, mushrooms kill any micro organisms?
I don't think this is true because I live just a few miles from the biggest mushroom producing area in the country. I surely would have heard if there were any adverse effects.

You're right about the cause, but NOT about not getting it in the throat. I know, I've been there and had it more ways than I could count. Seems I'm one of those pitiful few prone to it, although usually when I'm sick or on antibiotics.
My doc told me to eat yogurt with live cultures regularly, as it helps stock the 'good' flora.
Good for the diet too.
