my doctor told me i needed to start counting my calories and i found this site. it has really been helping me monitor my food. but i wanted to lose weight so i started going to the gym more regularly. my motivation is music. i have been going to the gym at least 4 times a week for the past few weeks, and each song gives me motivation to try a higher level or to stay on the machine for longer. but today at the gym my ipod flew off of the arc trainer and somehow split completely open. I am so sad, and i don't know what to do because without music i don't really think i can motivate myself to work out like i can with it. I have never seen this happen to an ipod and it seems to be just my luck. i'm kinda bummed. any suggestions?

I feel ya... My mp3 player just stopped working about 2 weeks ago... Changed the batteries and it still won't power on...
Oh dear. I know how you feel; I can't exercise at the gym without my ipod, either. I need my music so I can concentrate and not worry about the people around me.

Did you try putting it back together? iPods are meant to come apart like that, when you fix them or replace the battery. If none of the actual parts are broken, just disconnected, you might be able to fix it.

If you can't, I'd say find an old discman or even cassette player until you can fix or get a new ipod! It might look a little bulky, but who cares? Better than exercising without your motivation music.

Good luck!
Our gym plays music and has music channels on the tv so I never bother bringing my mp3 player with me.

The music makes me feel more relaxed and a few times when the music has stopped for a few minutes I haven't felt as relaxed exercising. I do find some music a great inspiration to be healthy - especially when there are tracks my Charlotte Church and Gwen Stefani playing. I mean being realistic, I will never be as gorgeous as them but it's a great way to inspire myself to keep going to and to be as healthy!

lcamilli, that's a total bummer about your iPod!  My best suggestion for you would be to invest in one of the clip-on iPod Shuffles.  You can clip them onto your sleeve, pants, shirt, whatever and they stay put pretty well.  And they come in colors now!  I just upload my running playlist onto it and go.  It's less expensive than a big iPod, too.  I got one for Christmas this year, and it's been the best motivation for me since I find that watching TV only makes me slow down on the elliptical.
I can't exercise without my mp3 player either.

I got a 1gig Creative Zen Nano Plus.   It is about the size of a bic lighter (though thinner) and with 1gig i can get quite a few albums of music on there.   Plus it's got a voice recorder, fm radio, and will even let me plug other stuff into it and will convert whatever the source is to mp3 without needing the computer.   It's been a good little player.

If you look around the gym you'll probably notice most of the people with mp3 player are using arm straps to hold them.   I use a lanyard I made from some beading string since my mp3 player is tiny enough to just wear around my neck.   Then I hook my headphones in that and tuck it inside my shirt so it doesn't flop around.

Your ipod may very well be fixable.   If you aren't confident enough to try to fix it, find someone you think may be able to and ask them for help to see if it'll go back together easily.   My guess?  It's probably totally fixable.

Get something to strap it to you with for future use if it ends up working.
thanks guys,  so far i have been borrowing friends ipods to motivate me, but the gym has their own station, but it is awful, really staticy and full of commercials. so i guess i am going to look into getting a nano or a shuffle. i am just worried that the shuffle will fall off when i am working out and break cuz it is so little. but my ipod is totally dead :(
the poor ipod broke into three parts, and it managed to dent the hard metal backing and rip the wires out of the battery, oh yeah and crack the screen haha. i looked online for replacement parts cost and they cost more than buying a brand new ipod. so i guess i'll just have to deal with buying a new one! but i'm going keep staying motivated no matter what!
thanks!!

When and if you do buy a new one, just make sure you buy an armband work-out holder, that way it's snug in it's own little carrier and has little chance to fall off and break..:)

I feel lost without my Ipod in the gym. like the other day I got to the gym and realized my battery was DEAD... that workout was defiantly not all that great.. :)

goodluck and sorry yours broke..
Oh man do I hate it when I get to the gym and either realize then the battery is dead or it dies during my workout.   Luckily a AAA last about 23 hours or more... so it doesn't happen too often... but still it's so hard to focus without the music.

My gym used to have a music channel when it was part of golds gym.  But since they split off to a new franchise name that channel disappeared.   So it's just watching tv or something to try and get my focus back.
