I had Nachos and they were GOOD

But.. there is a problem I know the mound of Sour Cream and chili was well over a 1000 calories.  I ordered them for the kids at a local resturant that people raved about. So I decided to stop in today have see how the nachos were. I ordered without even  thinking about portion size.  I "helped" the kids eat them.

I am wondering from those of you who eat locale fare, how do you order without becoming some sort of crazed food Nazi.

I have eaten at locale restaurants before and ordered "Safe Food".  Sandwich without mayo or oil.  Asking first if they could weigh the meat because I only want X amount.  Or ordered a salad without cheese or dressing.

What are some other tips for eating out when the calorie content is a mystery.

Hmm.. just dont order anything if the menu only has things like that on it. Wait until you get home to eat. If its a social eating event, just order what you know is the healthiest choice, or ask the waiter. Next time if you want nachos, have em, but that doesnt mean you have to eat all the extra crap with it. Choose wisely.

When you've got a bunch of kids to eat most of the dish, why not order yourself a salad or soup to fill up on, and then just treat yourself to a few bites of the greasy stuff.

Thanks for the tips.  I have been at this weight loss thing for a while and today was one of those moments where I wasn't thinking clearly.

Tomorrow will be better we are going to a water park and packing a lunch of no more than 500 calories.  No park food for me.

Eat and don't stress. One or two days will not derail weeks worth of healthy eating habits. Food is NOT the enemy. Just my two cents.

i stick to soups (not creamy ones though)..french onion without the cheese...ministrone...gaspacho (sp?)...they're filling and definitely not as bad as nachos (but nachos are oh so good!)

I am not a good one to answer this since I rarely eat out any where and when I do I have always had the attitude that if I am paying for this I am getting what I want but that is why I am still over wt. LOL

I normally eat only boiled, broiled or roasted  or raw veggies.

This has been hard for me. My family eats out as a social event weekly and everyone eats junk. The last few weeks I have been very good orderd a salad one day dressing on the side and didn't use much, the other time I filled up on safe foods at home and drank water at the resturant so that I could still spend time with my family and they could still enjoy some yummy food. Just watch out for the strange looks, my husband asked me if I had developed and eating disorder! I giggled because I eat all day long (mostly fruits and veggies) we just don't see each other that often. It just made me realize how much I was eating and how bad of foods I was eating.

As far as what to order, if you really have to have it, get a separte plate and take a small portion off of the larger plate. The serving sizes you get at most places are enough to feed 2-3 people. If you are anything like me, or the old me, if its in front of you, you will eat it. So just plan of only eating 1/4 of those nachos and then put yours on your own plate, when yours are gone, you are done.

Do get too upset. It was one meal. What maters is that you no you did it and you probably wont be doing that again!

Yesterday when I went out to eat with my mom I really wanted the fried zucchini and asked her if I got it if she would help me eat it. Lol, well then I changed my mind so she ordered it and I had like 4 pieces, they were cut like fries, so I think I did alright. I mean I know it was deep fried and batter dipped but the important thing was, I did not eat an entire order. Plus, then I just had a turkey sandwich no mayo and no cheese and of course water. I think as long as you have some self control and allow yourself so many of something like nachos then you are alright because if you just don't let yourself have them its like a forbidden thing and you will want them even more. I know I made the nacho mistake at the drive in the other week lol. I ate them all, they were just so good and I hadn't let myself have a treat in so long that I caved. Its okay to have a treat once in a while though or else you'll feel way too deprived and go over board.
