Hi all - I got a new horse about a week ago, and I hate the barn name she had "Diamond" - so generic and unimaginative! That being said, I'm really having a hard time coming up with something new (and I'm usually really good at naming critters!).  I think it may be because I've known her for 4 years, and it may be hard to think of her as anything but her current name.

She is a very pretty 10 year old tri-color tobiano paint mare.  Her registered name is "Bo's Miss Elegant".

What I like:  People names, or something creative, maybe based on the registered name or the fact that she's a paint horse.   I thought about "Ellie" and that's what I'll probably go with if no one else comes up with something great.

I don't have a picture of her yet, but this horse could almost be her twin except she has a little more brown in her main.

Thanks guys!

Mr. Ed.

honestly, i don't think it's cool to change her name at 10.  at 2, maybe, but she's an adult.  she knows her name (and if she doesn't...well, never mind).

Tom - I already have a Mr. Ed - see my gallery - actually it's a Mrs. Ed - but she looks just like him.  In fact for our horse club's Halloween show  I'll be dressing as Wilbur and putting PB in her mouth while I play the Mr Ed theme on my MP3 player.

PG - I know, I know - but I really hate "Diamond"  and I've found that dogs definitely know their names, but horses don't seem to as much.  I've already tried calling her a few different things, and she'll come to anything, as long as you whistle first.

Miles!

Or "Smickleburg Eisenheimer"

;o

What about a play on the fact she is a 'paint' horse ? (even though I didn't know what that was, till I looked it up)

I suggest using a famous painter's name, what about;

"Picasso", "Monet" "Dali" "Goya"  or "Matisse"

I think any of those would make great, more interesting names for your horse (other than Diamond) I like Goya for a name, especially.

I'd call her Indian Paintbrush.

Painted Elegance

Brushstroke Bo

Enchanted Elegance

And then you end up calling her Ellie anyway.

Patches Prairie Sunset

okay, let's clarify, here.

the registered name is the formal name that does not change - ever.

the "barn name" is the day-to-day nick-name.  so think--you know--"Fuzzy" or "Joe."

Soooooo......you think Patches Prairie Sunset might be a tad long?  Laughing

might be embarrassing to call that out in the pasture.

I've never named a horse but I like Eliza, Ruby, Opal, Hazel and Matilda - I used to call these the "old lady" names but some of them are popular again.

AURORA  (aw-Rohr-ah)

its means 'the dawn'

horses always make me think of sleeping beauty lolLaughing

Heehee.  I like the visual, PG.

Um...Dusty, Gypsy, and Goldie were horses my dad had once.

Pashmina.  If she really does look like that horse she looks like she's wearing a shawl.

I'd go with "Ellie," really.  Short for Elegant, and also lends itself well to that singsong intonation I always used when calling my horse - "Ellllllllllll-eeeeeeeeee!"

With mine it was "Spaaaaaarrrrr-keeeeeee!"

Xia means "glow of the sunrise" in Chinese.

And Dysis means sunset in Greek.

The mom of my beautiful dalmation was named Diamond (and all the puppies have Diamond in their registered names - mine was Diamond in the Ruff).  The breeders called Diamond - Dia (they prounouced it 'dee-ya' - which is unique and suited her to a tee!
