natural peanutbutter brands and nutrition
Okay so obviously there are numerous brands of natural peanut butter out there which are all made from the same ingredient 100% peanutbutter. so how can the nutrition be different for each brand. shouldn't they all be the same? some are higher or lower in fat while others are higher or lower in calories.
in America a serving is 2 tablespoons while in Australia a serving is 1 tablespoon but compared together in 100g the nutrition difference stands out.... why is this?
'Natural' means nothing at all. To improve the texture the manufacturer can add extra peanut oil and this still makes it '100% peanut' but changes the calorie count.
The list of ingredients should say
Peanuts
That's it. There are a few brands that add nothing and take nothing away, they just grind fresh roasted peanuts into a paste, which is what peanut butter is.
Here's an example: Crazy Richard's and Krema
My children didn't like it because they said it tasted too much like peanuts. Peanut butter can be flavored with salt and sugar and still be 100% natural. That natural product might be really good, but you need to read the list of ingredients.
Good points from gijane and clairelaine, although I'd add that these sorts of discrepancies can be the result of more than just differences in PB recipes from company to company. Peanuts are a natural product and are therefore liable to vary in their nutritional composition based on where they are grown, what variety is planted, how and when they are harvested, etc. Just as you see variation in the nutritional info for peanut butter, you can also find variations in the nutritional info for raw nuts and other produce.
Further, nutritional labeling standards vary a great deal from place to place. In the United States, fiber content can legally be excluded from the total calorie count whereas many other countries require fiber to be included. Rounding error also accounts for differences.
okay thanks for ther information. it had just been something i've been wondering about for a while. gi jane i doidn't consider them adding peanut oil. but anyway the peanutbutter i get is from one of those machines where it grinds it infront of you, so i actually don't know the nutritional content but for other brands which i use they're labelled 100% ground peanut iso i do have a rough idea of what i'm getting. thanks
